The Deep Space Diary is here! It’s time to uncover the secrets of the Universe with this creative, hands-on primary STEM programme.

The Deep Space Diary empowers students to make their own book as they adventure through space with the James Webb Space Telescope. They will study the history of astronomy, explore our Solar System, learn about light, colour and infrared and engineer their very own telescope.

Teachers and educators are fully supported by a huge suite of teaching resources including curriculum guides, lesson plans, videos, PowerPoint presentations and more.

The Deep Space Diary is written by Dr Olivia Johnson and features a diverse cast of real scientists and engineers to inspire the next generation. Our goal is to empower every student, everywhere, to tackle big questions, develop their scientifi c thinking and build confi dence. We hope you and your class enjoy the Deep Space Diary as much as we enjoyed making it!

Feel free to contact us at any time if you have any questions: [email protected].

What is the Deep Space Diary? The Deep Space Diary is a free primary STEM programme that combines STEM learning with a breadth of other subjects. It has been created with a diverse range of real STEM experts, including lead author Dr Olivia Johnson, and with the support of the Science and Technology Facilities Council. At the core of the programme is an activity book for students, available in hardcopy or as downloadable PDFs. The book contains 23 activities related to the James Webb Space Telescope. Each activity is accompanied by extensive teaching notes and multimedia resources to enhance learning. This programme is for KS2/P5-7/Y4-6, with differentiation ideas for other primary levels.

Accessing the Resources

All resources are free to download from discoverydiaries.org. To access the content, you’ll need to register for free and then you can log in and start downloading.

There are three ways to use the Deep Space Diary:

1. Using Hardcopy Books

Engage your students in STEM learning over a sustained period with the printed books. Students personalise the diaries as they complete each activity, giving them ownership of their learning. The completed books are also a great keepsake for students and valuable evidence for teachers.

https://discoverydiaries.org/shop/

2. Download Chapter-by-Chapter

Run STEM activities over a longer period without using printed books by downloading each chapter from the website: https://discoverydiaries.org/diary/deep-space-diary/

3. Download Individual Activities

Pick and mix activities that fi t into your school’s existing curriculum or for special events, Science Week, assemblies or home learning:

Planning Your Programme

Begin your planning by visiting the Teacher Toolkit section of the website. Here you will fi nd helpful planning resources like blank lesson plan templates, curriculum guides and refl ection templates.

https://discoverydiaries.org/resources/teacher-toolkit/

The Deep Space Diary is a cross-curricular primary programme, so you can incorporate it into science lessons or integrate activities with other subjects including maths, English, geography and art/DT. The Overview of Activities and Curriculum Links on page 12 provides a full list of subject links.

You will fi nd detailed curriculum guides for England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales in the Teacher Toolkit. These have been prepared by our team of teachers from each region.

how to use zap codes

3. Zap! Content will appear on your phone that relates to the activity (or in this case, astro Tim will appear with our chief technical offi cer, Sammy the Puggle!)

1. ReadyDownload the free Zappar App to your mobile or tablet

2. AimOpen Zappar and hold your device in front of the zap code(try this one!)

Digital Literacy and Independent LearningThroughout the Deep Space Diary programme you will fi nd Zap codes that give students access to extra content via phones or tablets.

These simple-to-use codes help to develop digital literacy while encouraging students to learn, research and self-evaluate independently. The Zap codes are also handy for home learning and holiday activities as parents will fi nd them easy to use too. For instructions on how to download the Zappar app (it’s free!) see:

https://discoverydiaries.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/Discovery-Diaries-Zappar-Instructions.pdf

For those who don’t have access to handheld devices, the multimedia

content within each Zap code is available to download from the website. See the individual activity pages for download links.

Rewards and IncentivesUse the Mission Badge stickers inside the printed diaries to foster deep engagement for the duration of the project. You may wish to remove the sticker page from books and reward students with a Mission Badge as they complete each chapter. Students collect these inside the back cover of their book. Schools printing their own diaries can download printable stickers from the Teacher Tookit. Once students have completed their diaries, you can reward them with a completion certifi cate, which you can download from the Teacher Toolkit.

Refl ecting and ReportingTo assist with feedback and evaluation, we’ve prepared a range of self-refl ection templates for students to complete at your discretion. You’ll fi nd these in our Teacher Toolkit:

Children’s University Passport

The Deep Space Diary is a validated Children’s University learning activity. Students receive one stamp in their passport for each chapter they complete. Members across the CU network can issue stamps either by stamping physical passports or by searching ‘James Webb Space Telescope Deep Space Diary’ at Children’s University Online and applying the stamp code: orange1684.
