In 2016 Bay Twisters hosted the first Cheer Competition in the BOP, the event proved extremely popular and this year promises to be bigger and better! Held at the massive ASB Arena, we can gaurantee that the event will be bigger than every before! 2016 saw 600 competitors take to the stage, this year we are expecting 1000+ competitors from all over New Zealand, make the most of the opportunity to compete and register now!

This year we will be keeping you happy from the time you enter the Arena, Coffee Carts, Merchandise, Give Away’s, Photo Booth, Daddy day care to name but a few.

Medals for first, second and third places as well as winners banners for the gyms!

2017 will see a Guinness World Record been set…… plus more surprises on the day.

Event Information

Based in the heart of Tauranga the Bay Twisters is the only non-profit cheerleading club in New Zealand. We have our own gym with sprung floor, training equipment and highly skilled Cheer and Tumble Coaches, as well as international coaches who visit frequently.

We are proud to be hosting Battle In The Bay this year and can’t wait to see you perform! Bay Twisters has classes for everyone, even if you haven’t done Cheerleading before. We take children from ages 3-20 years, boys and girls.

Please email your music for cheer and dance divi-sions to [email protected] at least 3 weeks prior to the event, or mailing a cd of your music. We reccommend having a device to play the music incase we experience technical difficulties on the day (ipod/iphone etc). You will be responsible for ensuring we have your music, so please be organized and have this to us on time. If your music is not of good quality and/or we have problems playing it, you must have backup music on you otherwise your team will have to perform to counts.

Divisions may be combined to ensure competition. Routines must have a ‘min-imum of 3 performers. Substitutions are allowed with reason, the substitute must abide by age regulations. Cost is per competitor. Performance time is 2 minutes 30 seconds, deductions will occur for going overtime.

PomPom poms must be used 80% of the routine. Important characteristics include synchronization and visual ef-fect, clean and precise motions, strong pom technique, and incorporate dance technical elements. Visual effect includes level changes, group work, formation changes etc.

Jazz/BalletExecution, style, control, transitions and creativity performed to high energy music. Routine incorporates stylized dance movements and combinations, formation changes, group work, leaps and turns. Emphasis is placed on proper technical execution, extension, control, body placement and group uniformity.

Hip HopExecutions of contemporary style, hip-hop feel uniformity, high energy and creativity. The music must be typi-cal to its style. Routines emphasize the street style movements with an emphasis on execution, style, creativity, body isolations and control, rhythm, uniformity and musical interpretation. Teams may also put an additional focus on athletic incorporations such as jumps, jump variations, combo jumps and other tricks.

LyricalLyrical routines combine the principles of jazz and ballet and emphasize proper technical execution, the use of flexibility, balance and mood. Routines are fluid in movement and focus on emotion that compliments the mu-sical selection. Implementing the principles of fall & recovery &/or contraction & release and weight sharing to express inner feeling as related to the musical or narrative piece.

OpenA routine in this category may incorporate any one style or combination of styles outlined in the USASF category listings. All styles will be judged against each other in this category. The style of dance performed will determine which “category” rules a team will follow in the appropriate age division.

Our panel of judges will be qualifed, unbiased, and not associated with any competing team/performer for the divisions they are judging. All of the judges are required to have NZCU full certification.

Judges will be using the Varsity Scoring System for Cheer Teams and the NZCU Specialty Scoring System for cheerleading specialty items as recommended by NZCU. Any questions, please email [email protected]

Score sheets will be available to coaches from the judges table 30 minutes following the end of a division. Any disagreements with score sheets must be taken up with the head judge and may result in a full safety judge review. All scores are final 15minutes prior to the start of the prize giving ceremony. Final results sheets will be available from the judges table following prize giving. By participating in this competition, all teams agree that the decisions made by the judges are final and will not be subject for review.

Information and Guidelines- All athletes must follow the USASF/NZCU/UCA (where applicable) must be followed. These are available from the resources section on our website www.battleinthebay.co.nz

- All cheer specialty division routine performance times (excluding special needs), must not exceed 1 minute. All dance divisions must perform to music; will be judged on and must incorporate technical elements, body control and placement, style, unifromity and precision.

- All stunts, tumble, or other skills where contact with the floor is lost, must be performed under the supervision of a qualified coach and is limited to designated warm up and competition areas.

- In the event a routine is interrupted because of failure due to the event organiser equiment, facilities, etc, then the participants affected will be permitted to contine with counts, or stop and restart the routine from the be-ginning, or from where the intterruption occured. If the participants continue with counts, they will be given the option to perform again and will be re judged. If the interruption occurs again, the first routine performed will be counted.

- All event attendees must display a high level of sportsmanship throughout the competition. All behavior that is deemed offensive, as bullying and disrespectful may result in disqualifation without refund from the event.

- Each athlete must submit a waiver form with registration.

- x2 Credentialed coaches attend free. Coaches must be credentialed to the level in which the team/specialty item is entered in.

- Photos and filming are permitted, however no flash please. An event photographer and videographer will be there on the day to capture every moment.

- Food and drinks will be available to purchase at the venue, you are also free to bring your own.

- Time Limits: Cheer/Dance Teams 2 minutes 30 seconds. NZCU Novice 2 minutes. All cheer/dance specialty items 1 minute.

- All athletes/coaches/spectators must follow the NZCU Code of Conduct. Found on our website.

Where possible, the divisions listed may be combined or split to ensure there will be at least 2 or more teams in each division. This is at the EP’s discretion and all atheletes and coaches will be informed prior to competing.

Divisions may be split further if a large number of teams are competing. All athletes will be made aware of the prior to competing.

Cheer and Dance teams must abide by the current NZCU Modifications to the USASF/IASF Divisions available on our website under Resources.

The age of the competitor as of December 31st 2017, will be used for competition purposes.

An individual will not be permitted to crossover from 1 team to another, within the same event. A cheerleader is permitted to crossing over to 1 additional cheer team from their gym per competition. There-fore, an athlete may compete on one team and crossover to one more team from the same gym during the competition, but not within the same division. All age requirements must be met. The athelete can only com-pete in consecutive levels, eg, no athlete can compete in a level 2 team and a level 4 team during the compe-tition, but can compete in a level 2 team and a level 3 team. Crossover limitations do not include athletes that crossover from cheer to dance or club cheer to school cheer.
