unprotected intercourse (6 months for women over 35?)–Primary or Secondary

• Fertility–Ability to conceive

STATISTICS• 80% of couples will conceive within 1

year of unprotected intercourse

• ~86% will conceive within 2 years

• ~14-20% of US couples are infertile by definition (~3 million couples)

CAUSES OF INFERTILITY

• Sperm disorders • Anovulation/oligoovulation • Tubal disease • Unexplained • Cervical factors • Peritoneal factors

CAUSES OF INFERTILITY….

• Sperm Disorders–No production/ No ejaculation–Poor quality–Diseases i.e STDx, Diabetes Mellitus,

Surgeries,Varicocoele, Drugs

Anovulation–Simply means no ovulation–Polycystic ovaries

Tubal Disease–Most common cause in women in this

environment–Largely preventable–Mostly from STDx i.e. Gonorrhea,

Chlamydia etc

Unexplained Infertility• Occur in about 15% of couples

• No cause found after investigations
