If you catch rubella, or German measles, in pregnancy, especially in the first three months, it can cause serious defects in the fetus, including heart disease, deafness, and blindness. Before you conceive ask your doctor for a blood test to make sure you are immune to the disease. If you are not, you should be vaccinated. After vaccination, wait for three months before trying to conceive. Tell your doctor at once if you come into contact with rubella.
