Industry Leaders Magazine has been providing business news and information across various industry sectors from different parts of the world. We have been publishing stories about milestones reached by companies through phenomenal efforts and winning strategies.

The general notion is that the larger an organization is, the larger impact it has on the environment due to a high contribution to greenhouse gas emissions. So given that Google is one of the worlds largest corporate organizations, logic would say that the company in general must be harming the environment significantly, right ?

    Wrong.

According to Googles announcement earlier in September, the search engine giant is actually not just carbon neutral, but in fact beyond carbon neutral.

A group of scientists from Universities across the U.K have undertaken a project that involves designing a fake volcano, as an experiment towards developing ways to combat climate change. With the aim of reducing atmospheric temperatures caused by climate change, and to complement conventional measures to reduce carbon emissions, the SPICE (Stratospheric Particle Injection for Climate Engineering) project will be a unique test of engineering technology that could become a precedent for future

Collaborating partners include researchers from the Universities of Bristol, Cambridge, Edinburgh and Oxford, along with Marshall Aerospace.

Explaining the scope of the SPICE project, Dr Matt Watson, from the University of Bristol, who is leading the project, said SPICE is the first UK project aimed at providing some much-needed, evidence-based, knowledge about geoengineering technologies. The project itself is not carrying out geoengineering, just investigating the feasibility of doing so.

Blue-prints for an entirely new town in the United States are being drawn up, for what will become the countrys testing base for new technologies. The only difference in this town as compared to any other will be that no people will live here.

Dubbed as The Center for Testing, Evaluation and Innovation, the structure of this smart city will mimic that of real cities, and within this framework will test sustainable technologies and infrastructure to see if these would actually work in the real built environment. Except that here there would be no fear of disrupting real communities.

The Centre will take up around 20 square miles of virgin desert in New Mexico and aims to explore innovative technologies related to issues like smart grid security, stability, communication systems and transportation technologies.

The project will be executed by technology, communications and defense contractor Pegasus Global Holdings in conjunction with the State of New Mexicos Department of Economic Development.

Household incomes among Americans have fallen sharply, accompanied by a rise in the number of people living below the poverty line to 46.2 million, the highest in over 50 years, according to income and poverty figures released by the U.S Census Bureau earlier this month.

These figures add more distress to the already disappointing economic figures released by the U.S Department of Commerce and the Labour Department about the decline in consumer spending and high unemployment

Leadership is a trait known to many, learnt by some and perfected by few. There are leaders and managers and supervisors and bosses, among others, who take up the responsibilities of getting things done through others, rather than by others. Many attempt, some learn and a few succeed. Leadership is a trait that is not passed on or inherited, it has to be earned, and on a daily basis.

    10 Must-Have Leadership Traits

    Leadership Talks...Leadership Talks...

The concept of leadership has been the basis for much research and a good amount of literature has been published about the same, highlighting and describing the dos and donts, traits of good leaders, characteristics of the best leaders, things that make good leaders and the things that make leaders good. In a world where every third person is a self-proclaimed expert on business and leadership, it is important to learn from the very best.

    1. I suppose leadership at one time meant muscles; but today it means getting along with people. M.K. Gandhi

There was a time when the strongest person from a group, clan or kingdom used to be their leader. In the present predominantly democratic society, a leader is selected by the people from the people and for the people. It is important for a leader to be concordant and approachable in order to facilitate an environment of growth and intellect. If an employee cannot approach the leader of the organization, he cannot put forth his demands, suggestions or ideas, thereby, hampering his creative genius and rendering him unsatisfied. A leader that can

get along with his followers, listen and appreciate to their ideas and take care of their needs is the leader of the future.

    2. The leaders who work most effectively, it seems to me, never say I. Peter F. Drucker

The most effective leaders in the world seldom use the word I, they say we. The best leaders always think in terms of a team and believe in team work. It is the job of every leader to make the team function and the ones that understand that start thinking along the same lines and are effective. These leaders accept the challenges and work towards making their team efficient; the leader faces the song but gives credit to the team. This creates trust in the team and enables the leader to get the task done.

    3. Innovation distinguishes between a leader and a follower. Steve JobsLeadership and innovation have an intrinsic relationship. As the focus of both leadership and innovation is to

  • www.industryleadersmagazine.comOctober 2011 www.industryleadersmagazine.com22

bring about a better future, the relationship is inevitable. Innovation also means going out of the normal route to reach desired goals. A leader who is innovative and produces better results is respected and looked upon. Without innovation, a leader is a mere manager of a given situation.

In a research conducted in 2008 (McKinsey research), it was found that more than 70% of the senior executives believed that innovation was going to be one of the three main drivers for growth in the following three years for their companies.

    4. Dont manage - lead change before you have to. Jack Welch

Managing is not easy, but it is not the high-end of leading an organization. Managing a crisis is important, but if the leader has the foresight to see the situation coming, he can easily make decisions beforehand that can avert the crisis and lead to innovative development. Foresight has the power and potential of transforming the business industry and it is important that a leader possess foresight if the organizations is to grow. In absence of foresight, the

opportunity of getting to the finishing line first and establishing market supremacy is lost. For example, Rupert Murdochs foresight helped him to create market monopoly when it came to disseminating news and he went on to become one of the most successful entrepreneurs of the world and his company News Corporation, the second largest media conglomerate in the world.

    5. I dont look to jump over 7-foot bars: I look around for 1-foot bars that I can step over. Warren Buffet

It is important for a leader to be realistic. Having momentum is necessary but not knowing when to stop can lead to a

  • www.industryleadersmagazine.comOctober 2011 www.industryleadersmagazine.com

    Patrick AlainLeadership Talks...

    Leadership Talks...

disaster. A leader should always know the limitations of the team he is leading and try to accomplish feats that are possible and within reach. Seven successful small feats are anytime better than one big feat, which may or may not be successful. World Com Inc., Enron Corp. and Bethlehem Steel are great examples of industry giants who failed to realize when to stop and ended up devastated and bankrupt.

    6. Sometimes your best investments are the ones you do not make. Donald J. Trump

One of the main responsibilities of a good leader is to make intelligent choices and exercise restraint while making investments. The global market keeps offering luring opportunities for investments and a leader should know when to invest and when to say no. While investments can be highly profitable, they can also be expensive and unprofitable leading to crunch situations.

    7. You dont learn to walk by following rules. You learn by doing and by falling over. Richard Branson

Learning from your mistakes is a general must-do for everyone, more so for the leaders. Everyone makes

  • www.industryleadersmagazine.comOctober 2011 www.industryleadersmagazine.com

    Patrick Alain

    Leadership Talks...

mistakes but the ones who learn from their mistakes move past them and become better with every fall. One who learns from an earlier mistake will never commit it again and reduce the chances of failure in the future.

    8. I have learned silence from the talkative, tolerance from the intolerant, and kindness from the unkind; yet strangely, I am ungrateful to these teachers Kahlil Gibran

Learning doesnt have to be limited to ones own mistakes and good examples set by others, one can also learn from the mistakes committed by others and bad examples set by them. In a competitive market, it is very important to keep a track of ones rivals, how they perform, what they do and the outcome of their actions. One doesnt necessarily have to follow their footsteps and do whatever turned out to be good for them, but when it comes to mistakes they make, one has to note them down on the things to avoid notice board.

    9. As a leader, I am tough on myself and I raise the standard for everybody; however, I am very caring because I want people to excel at what they are doing so that they can aspire to be me in the future. Indra Nooyi

A leader should be a role-model for the followers. This can be possible only if the leader sets high standards that need hard-work to be matched. This not only makes the leader respectable among his followers but also motivates the followers to work harder towards achieving higher standards of work.

    10. I start with the premise that the function of a leader is to produce more leaders, not more followers. Ralph Nader

One of the best characteristics of a modern leader is that he creates leaders from his followers. Creating leaders is not easy and it takes a long time to identify potential in the team member and nurturing it in a positive direction. Assigning tasks and duties to the team member and putting some of them in charge of particular tasks makes them self-reliant and develops their leadership qualities. So, by the time the top level leaders of an organization, such as, CEOs and Directors, retire, they leave behind a legacy and new leaders.

    you do not make

Through their business model, New York based BrightFarms, with their locally-produced, fresher, tastier food, offers to bring all the benefits of a Farmers Market to the Supermarket.

And while providing better food, BrightFarms also offers an alternative to generating high amounts of greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution, and avoid traffic congestion.

We design, finance, build and manage the operations of the BrightFarm to deliver

produce at equal or higher service levels than the retailer currently requires of its other

suppliers. There is no cost to the retailer to build the BrightFarm, only an obligation to

    purchase the output.

    29

    A Smarter Choice for Supermarkets

Why do some people prefer farmers markets to supermarkets despite the former offering less volumes of produce often for higher prices? Because, says BrightFarms, an increasing number of urban consumers want better, locally-produced food, not necessarily the cheapest available food.

Given that more consumers are opting for choosing from a larger variety of food, even if available in smaller volumes, especially if this means creating more job opportunities in the immediate localities, BrightFarms offers all this to supermarkets through their finance, development and management business.image courtesy mycopter.eu

To start with, BrightFarms promises higher profits for retailers. Their business module does not require retailers to invest any capital in the business; the only requirement is a contract to buy their produce.

And given that they more often than not offer their products at lower wholesale prices than comparable products shipped thousands of miles, coupled with associated supermarkets freeing themselves from inconsistencies due to rising fuel costs, the BrightFarms model is sure to find lots of takers within the retailing community.

An obvious advantage is the much smaller amount of shrink because of the significantly longer shelf-life of locally produced food, translating directly into higher profits.

    30

E n v i r o n m e n t a l SustainabilityIn addition to offering a scaled-up urban gardening alternative that promises numerous benefits to supermarkets and their customers, the Brightfarms concept has also been developed with environmental sustainability as one of their primary criteria.

According to B r i g h t F a r m s estimates, when food has to travel long distances they say that the average item of food in the United States travels at least 1500 miles the cost of gasoline used for transportation can amount to half the value of the food itself. Basing their business model on the Zero food miles concept, B r i g h t F a r m s farming within urban areas removes the need for lengthy transportation.T

t Also, in contrast to conventional agricultural practices, which produce a lot of greenhouse gas emissions from the use of fossil fuels for heating purposes in winter, BrightFarm greenhouses capture waste heat from the host building, which means that their system uses close to no additional fossil fuel for heating. Similarly, the greenhouses use low energy cooling systems where power for cooling is generated through installed solar panels.

BrightFarms also maximizes the use of increasingly scarce land and water resources by growing their produce in a land area that is 20 times smaller than would be required by conventional agricultural techniques, while the recirculating hydroponic techniques that BrightFarms operate with use up to 10 times less water than conventional field agriculture.

Wed be surprised if this urban farming concept doesnt take off!

In what is likely to be the realization of a much desired infrastructure dream project linking Russia and North America, the construction of the worlds longest tunnel, spanning the Bering Strait, was approved by the Russian Government in September 2011.

The 65 mile long tunnel, twice the length of the British Channel Tunnel that connects Britain and France, is being planned to be built in

three sections and will pass under the Big Diomede and Little Diomede islands in the Bering Strait.

The cost of building this Bering Strait Tunnel is being estimated at around $65 billion.

The project is envisaged as being part of the much larger 3,700 mile railroad

project that is being built to connect Yakutsk in Russia to Canadas British Columbia and will offer a highway, high-speed rail tracks, a fiber optic network as well as pipelines for oil and gas.

Project HistoryThe idea of a direct rail route and bridge spanning across and linking North America with the EuroAsian region was first conceived more than a century ago in 1905 by Tsar Nicholas II. With technological limitations at the time however, constructing such a mammoth-scale project was not possible.

Neither Siberia nor Alaska currently has rail route links that connect the farthest points of their respective territories.

The project, recently approved by the Kremlin, has been revived after being shelved earlier

in 2007. The project, reportedly brought to the discussion table by Aleksandr Levinthal, a high-profile Russian politician at a conference that focused on the development of Russias northeastern rail infrastructure, will be in the form of a PPP private public partnership.

According to a statement made by Viktor Razbegin in an interview to Russia Today, an official from the Russian Ministry of Economic Development, The project is already underway The rail track to Yakutsk that we have been building for the past 15 years has always been seen as the first part of the road. It will be finished in just about a year.

Expressing some concern over political hurdles that yet need to be overcome, Razbegin added However, the most important is the political decision which hasnt been taken yet. There are multiple countries involved, and it will be hard.

While the project looks more real than ever before, it will be a long wait before the entire link starts function-ing across its different components. Estimates say that the tunnel alone will require 15 years to be built, while the entire network, including the railway system which

needs to be constructed on both sides of the Bering Strait is likely to be completed by 2045.

    Logistical Benefits

Given the strategic role a direct rail link between North America and Russia would play towards boosting trade and tourism, the Bering Strait tunnel is obviously expected to offer immense economical and political advantages.

The manner in which this project is being planned, the rail link will literally connect the Siberian interior with the US east coast, resulting in a railway network across 3/4 of the Northern Hemisphere. What this means is that tourists would be able to travel overland, from Europe to New York city, with the journey helping save travelling time while also opening up an entirely new experience across landscapes and climates.

Often referred to as Chinas Caterpillar, Sany Heavy, the largest construction machinery manufacturing company of China, is all set to launch its expansion phase despite volatile market trends, by planning an IPO in the Hong Kong stock market later this month. Sany Heavy reportedly aims to raise around $3.3 billion from this offering.

The offering will include 1.34 billion shares of the company, valued at HK$16.13-HK$19.38 each, and will be handled by a consortium that includes the Bank of America Merrill Lynch, Citic Securities and Citigroup Inc. as joint global coordinators.

At a time when global stock market trading is witnessing a general low because of the unpredictability of world economies, Sany Heavys IPO in the Hong Kong stock market is likely to be Hong Kongs second-biggest stock offering this year, following Glencores $10 billion IPO that took place earlier this year in May through its dual listing in the Hong Kong and London stock exchanges.

    A Beyond-Zero Carbon FootprintHow ?

The Big Picture by Google explains being beyond-zero carbon by saying that Our efforts in efficiency, buying clean energy, and purchasing offsets bring our carbon footprint down to zero. Were going beyond carbon neutral by investing hundreds of millions of dollars in renewable energy projects that create far more renewable energy for the world than we consume as a company.

Google has increasingly been investing in smart energy, green initiatives, with the more recent ones in this area being its $168 million investment in the Ivanpah solar power tower plant followed by $280 million investment towards creating the largest residential solar financing fund in the United States in conjunction with SolarCity.

Alongwith having invested in utility-scale projects, built to contribute significant amounts of renewable energy to todays electricity grid, Google has also invested in early-stage companies such as Makani Power and Potter Drilling, which are working towards developing innovative new technologies to in the wind and geothermal energy sectors respectively.50

The company has also made public the fact that it has put in place a number of special arrangements to buy electricity from wind farms, as a result of which an estimated 25 percent of Googles 2010 energy needs were reportedly supplied by renewable fuels. The company estimates that this figure will reach 30 percent in 2011.

    The dawn of

    South Africas Renewable Energy Industry

    fore

    wor

    d

    - by Dr. Chris Haw

Heavily reliant on its abundant coal supply and dominated by Eskom for the past 35 years, the South African electricity supply industry seems set for a shake up. The South African Government has started to shift its focus towards diversifying its energy mix, creating a secure supply of electricity and stimulating the development of a renewable energy industry in order to supplement the countrys rapidly growing energy demands.

The Finite Power of CoalSouth Africas abundance of coal deposits, coupled with the perceived cost efficiencies of coal generated electricity and a nationalised monopoly on the generation market, have, until recently, allowed the South African government to offer its consumers significantly low subsidised rates for electricity generated by the energy source. Unsurprisingly, until now, coal has been the preferred means of electricity

generation in the country and is currently South Africas primary source of base load power, accounting for approximately 90 percent of the countrys total generation capacity.

However, poor planning and a rapidly growing economy has left the country in an electricity supply crisis for the past three years, resulting in the government resorting to load shedding initiatives which have dealt a massive blow to the countrys GDP.

This, along with a progressive shift in the global mind set to focus on ensuring sustainable energy generation, the Governments commitment toreducecarbon emissions and manage the risk of carbon fines, as well as the acknowledgement that the countrys low grade coal is now longer sufficient for efficient power generation, has forced the South African government to seek alternative means of electricity production.

The Infinite Power of Renewable Energy With global trends in environmental awareness placing much pressure on economies to put in place long-term policies on emission reductions, and with the mounting uncertainty of Eskoms ability to support the countrys growing energy demands, the South African government finally released its 20 year Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) for 2010 to 2030. The IRP2010 places considerable emphasis on the development of renewable and nuclear technologies as the future

source of sustainable power generation in the country and, if all goes according to plan, coal should only contribute 43 percent to the total electricity generation mix by 2030.

The Renewable Energy Mix and the Role of the Industry AssociationThe following table below shows the allocations for the various sources of electricity generation as per the IRP draft of October 2010:

As one can see from the table, the first draft of the IRP excludes photovoltaic (PV) technology from its allocations a major oversight by the energy policy makers as PV is a clean, simple and well established technology in

international markets that converts solar radiation directly into electricity, and which is becoming an increasingly affordable technology. In response to this omission, the South African Photovoltaic Industry 66

Association (SAPVIA) was born in October 2010 and, after much lobbying and many discussions with the key decision makers, the association successfully contributed to the 8400MW allocation PV now enjoys in the

policy adjusted IRP released in May of this year.

The current allocations are listed in the table below:

SAPVIA, originally only consisting of seven founding members, has grown rapidly in the short space of its existence and now represents 36 companies with at least several more in the process of registering for memberships.

Says Dr. Chris Haw, SAPVIAs Chairperson: Our members comprise mainly developers, manufacturers and service providers operating within South Africas PV industry and our membership base continues to grow at an impressive rate with membership enquiries coming in on a daily basis.

With South Africas renewable energy industry only in its infancy,Haw believes industry associations such as SAPVIA have a major role to play in helping establish the industry. He explains: By providing a conduit through which industry and government can communicate and by keeping each other informed of important developments, we can work together to ensure a successful and sustainable implementation of renewable energy into the countrys supply mix.

    67

Other benefits SAPVIA members enjoy are networking opportunities; access to industry information and data; notifications of latest industry news and legislative changes that impact the market; access to research papers that would otherwise need to be paid for; participation in meetings and workshops with key stakeholders; as well as discounted rates for certain conferences.

Setting the Ball in MotionAfter much anticipation, the countrys Department of Energy released the eagerly awaited Request for Proposals (RFP)documentationfor its Renewable Energy

Independent Power Producer procurement Programme in August this year, finally setting the renewables bidding process in motion.Says Haw: Although still firmly in support of a renewable energy feed-in tariff programme over the price-based competitive bidding system which the government has opted for, SAPVIA is pleased the documents have been released and that vital steps are being taken to ensure the renewable energy projects get off the ground timeously. Having studied thedocuments and their stringent criteria, Haw continues, the association is impressed with the apparent great lengths the government has gone to ensure the procurement programme is a success.

  • www.industryleadersmagazine.comOctober 2011 www.industryleadersmagazine.com

It is probably immensely difficult for most people to imagine that we are close enough to the space age to be in the process of constructing a commercial spaceport on Earth.

And yet, with Spaceport America, the worlds first purpose-built commercial spaceport, designed

with the needs of the commercial space business in mind, concepts like space tourism have become more real than ever before.

Under construction in the State of New Mexico, Spaceport America describes their vision as being to lead the world in enabling

safe and economical access to space through collaborative innovation to enhance the quality of life for all mankind.

Likely to cost the New Mexico government around $200m, upon completion, Spaceport Americas commercial spaceport in New Mexico will offer services to companies such as Virgin Galactic which are working within the space tourism sector

Picture PerfectNew Mexicos weather and wide-open spaces have been ideal for the aerospace industry since Robert Goddard, the Father of Modern Rocketry, began conducting research in Roswell in the 1930s, followed by Wernher von Braun in the 1940s, and NASA in the 1980s.

Spaceport America capitalizes on the fact that a number of avant-garde entrepreneurs are developing both vertical and horizontal launch vehicles towards exploring commercial space travel opportunities.

The space-age terminal and hangar building which will form part of the spaceports facility have been designed by Foster and Partners 98

in a manner that enables these buildings to blend in with the desert scrubland here, while housing rocket-based spacecraft and all the safety hazards that need to be taken into account.

The location for the spaceport has been selected given its distance from any sizable populations. Additionally, given that New Mexico has about 350 days of sun each year, weather changes are not likely to affect launches. Also, the White Sands missile testing range being located next to the spaceport ensures the air space overhead is already a no-fly zone, and facilitates logistical ease for companies operating out of Spaceport America.expertise of 1200 people on board.

In the late fifties they began to rapidly grow the company and its tonnage transport. Spontaneous development of the tonnage became possible among others through the establishment of Antyczarterowego Fund in 1958. PM used the resources of this fund until 1963 and bought 22 units of Liberty, Empire and Park with a total carrying capacity of 250 thousand. DWT. These ships allowed the owner to significantly increase the operating range.
