Structure and method

• Diversity of areas within each project• Each project requires diverse engineering skills to

be mastered. An essential requirement for successful entry in industry

• Common areas across many projects• There are many common trends between projects to

encourage the formation of study groups. These groups are the main driving force of R&D in industry.

Page 4: Industry Based Work MSc Dissertations Sept 2009 Panos Ioakim EEM118 DISSERTATION TOPICS with Panos Iokim Panos Iokim will be at the University on Monday.

Structure and method

• Interdependencies between projects• Some projects require direct coexistence to create a

single product. Some are more obvious than others. Working across discipline boundaries and establishing the interfaces is one of the most important aspects in product or system design.

• Real world applications• All of these projects are “real industry”

applications and should be treated as such.

Page 5: Industry Based Work MSc Dissertations Sept 2009 Panos Ioakim EEM118 DISSERTATION TOPICS with Panos Iokim Panos Iokim will be at the University on Monday.

Structure and method

• Product development approach• Every project is a product or a part of a product

which by itself can be used stand-alone as one. Product development methods such as Product Based Planning, Conformance, packaging and budgeting are essential skills in industry.

• Have fun doing something interesting and creative with other colleagues

• Social skills are as important as technical knowledge in the work place. Forming a social circle with the work-group and discussing project issues and problems over coffee, lunch or a casual evening out will hone essential communication skills whilst fun.

Page 14: Industry Based Work MSc Dissertations Sept 2009 Panos Ioakim EEM118 DISSERTATION TOPICS with Panos Iokim Panos Iokim will be at the University on Monday.

AbstractA requirement exists for a contact-less distance measuring sensor with sub-millimetre accuracy able to operate within the dynamic range of DC to 100Hz. The sensor’s prime configuration should allow it to produce “real-time” linear analogue distance data of an oscillating surface at an amplitude of up to 1cm. A secondary digital output representing the frequency of oscillation is also required for closed loop control feedback.

5 Performance Analysis of Angular Rate Gyros for Inertial Attitude Estimation

AbstractThe new generation of MEMS Devices provide a low cost alternative to linear and angular accelerometers. Through mathematical processing of the raw data and filtering, a gyroscope could be emulated, providing inertial attitude. This research based study is to evaluate the possibility of such a device by experimentally deriving values for drift, baseline noise, mathematical errors and offsets and design countermeasures in an attempt to extract the best positional accuracy possible.

7 A Touch Sensitive Robotic Hand

AbstractAn intelligent robotic hand is required, able to pick up and relocate objects of similar size but of different material strengths and textures without damaging them. The focus here is on the sensor design. The “hand” should be able to pick up a solid piece of aluminium and an egg with equal dexterity and control as to neither drop the heavier, smoother load or crash the egg. It should be able to hold an empty paper cup and keep holding it whilst it is being filled with water.

8 Sun Tracking PV Panel

AbstractPhotovoltaic cells exhibit a non-linear voltage output with regard to the angle of incidence of incoming light energy. In order to maximise the efficiency of such panels and take advantage of this renewable and green energy, a motorised panel is required, able to track the sun’s position in the sky and adjust its attitude as to attain maximum energy output. The electricity required for attitude control should also come from the panel itself. It must also overcome obvious problems such as resetting at sunset!

9 A Digitally Controlled, Precision Motor Speed Controller for line scanners

AbstractLine scanners are precision instruments that sequentially acquire radiation data, visible or Infra Red, from moving objects and build a picture over time. Such scanners utilise constant sampling rates and therefore any slight irregularity of the rotational speed of the optics results in faulty pixels. A brush-less motor with digital closed loop control is required, able to attain rotational speeds from 10Hz to 100Hz with an error of 0.1Hz. Such a device should be capable of driving optics of different inertial loads.

10 In-line Mains Power Tapping

AbstractA device is required to replace an ordinary light switch with a touch sensitive one. Most touch sensitive switches on the market either require batteries, extra wiring or rectify the AC before supplying the load. Some “Steal” part of the AC cycle to self power. An innovative and simple way of tapping into the mains power is required when the switch is either on or off. Adequate power should be obtained, enough to power the sensor and switching circuit when the load ranges between 60 and 300W

11 Remote Access Temperature Probe Network

AbstractSmart buildings require accurate measurement and logging of environmental variables that effect the structure such as temperature and humidity. Due to the high number of these sensors required for an average size house and their location, a wireless sensor solution is required. The wireless sensors should be accessed via a central hub able to remotely access and store the data against a unique code representing a type and location of sensor. This project will concentrate on measuring temperature within 1°C or better.
