INDUSTRY ACTIVITIES AESF's SUR/FIN '96 Annual Conference and Exhibit of Surface Finishing will be held June 10-13 at the Cleveland Convention Center. The Technical Conference begins on the 10th, and the Exhibit will open on the 1lth at 5 p.m. with an exhibit preview and reception. All types of equipment, products, and services applicable to the surface finishing industry will be ex- hibited in over 400 booths. AESF will be arranging a confer- ence agenda that offers the latest in technical information and practical ap- plications. Recognized experts will give exclusive, informative presenta- tions on the latest technology available in surface finishing. A new technology center for furnace de- velopment is also planned. The consol- idation is scheduled to be completed before the third quarter of 1996. U.S. Filter Corp., Warrendale, Pa., has announced that it has changed the name of its ceramic membrane group from U.S. Filter/Membralox to U.S. Filter/Ceramic Membrane Products. The group develops and promotes new applications for ceramic membrane fil- tration. Clariant Corp., Charlotte, N.C., has built a new Technical Center, which will expand its customer service laboratory and pilot line. The center houses a 100-liter pilot line and is equipped with the most sophisticated analytical equipment currently avail- able. The Steel Structures Painting Council (SSPC), Pittsburgh, has de- veloped a new standard for use by facility owners and others when eval- uating the qualifications of shops that apply paint to steel items. QP 3, "Stan- dard Procedure for Evaluating Qualifi- cations of Shop Painting Contractors," provides evaluation criteria for four areas: management procedures, techni- cal capabilities, quality control, and safety. The standard also describes such issues as applying for certifica- tion, the on-site audit, methods for ap- pealing a negative decision, and annual re-evaluations.
