5 TRAITS YOU SHOULD LOOK FOR IN A WELDER

Welders should be able to:

• clamp broken metal pieces together and melt and apply solder along adjoining edges of work pieces.

• monitor the quality of welds and components, repair leaks, select and use grinders and other metal finishers.

• set up fixtures and machine tools and test coils for air leaks.

1. Mathematical Skills2. Attention to Detail3. Physical Abilities4. Fortitude5. Administrative Tasks

5 TRAITS YOU SHOULD LOOK FOR A WELDING ROBOT OPERATOR

1. Experience

He/ She would know that the correct welding sequence ensures integrity of material, realize the upstream processes can possibly affect welding, and quickly define out-of-spec welds with his/ her

quick glance at the final point.

2. Ownership

Hire workers that feel responsible for the machine they operate

3. Initiative

Willingness of a worker to step forward for quality is more important with complex welding positions. The operator for robotized TIG welding has to maintain tungsten electrode, ensure appropriate wire

guide positioning, and verify the parts sit in the fixtures as designed.

4. A 3-D mindset

It will be great if a welding operator has a 3-D visualization. He/ She can see how a robotic arm moves around a work-piece, and figure the best way to attack the hard-to-reach area

5. Familiarity with computers

Experience and familiarity with computers help a welder transition to the role of robotic welding cell operator. Those skills allow an operator to jump into all the benefits which advanced control software

has to offer.

EWF QUALIFICATION SYSTEM

CONCLUSIONS

In any sector and especially in manufacturing, international qualifications are a very efficient way of innovating the required training and respective qualifications.

With the input from the network of countries we have in EWF, we are able to pinpoint the actual skills needed in metal additive manufacturing and develop an international qualification based in the EWF quality assurance system

Workers in the 30 member countries of EWF will have access to harmonised qualifications in metal additive manufacturing endorsed by stakeholders

CONCLUSIONS

This international qualification, with procedures forrecognition of existing formal or informal skills and basedon a modular structure, will encourage the acquisitionof new skills in manufacturing.

Excellence in manufacturing requires training andqualification which needs to follow new approachesto prepare industry for the next-generation innovationand to support its growth.
