Subject : Industrial Visit to TH Heavy Engineering Berhad
This Industrial Visit is one of the assessment requirements for Professional English 2
(WEB20302) Module. The objectives of this assignment are to produce a report on an Industrial
Visit and to identify interviewee personnel in the engineering industry.
The company the researchers chose is TH Heavy Engineering Berhad formerly known as
Ramunia Holdings Berhad. The main reason the researchers chose this company because it is
related to our course which is engineering and it can be such an early exposure to us in this field.
The researchers focus is about Research and Development (Rnd) where this research focus can
compiles all the information concerning about the projects, staff, training and safety.

TH Heavy Engineering Berhad was incorporated on 18 November 2003, formerly known
as Ramunia Holdings Berhad, is the parent company of THHE Fabricators Sdn Bhd(“TFSB”),
formerly known as Ramunia Fabricators Sdn Bhd. TFSB is the main operating company for the
group and it was incorporated on 17 January 2001.
The company was awarded its first fabrication contract by Petronas Carigali for Kinarut
KINDP-A Platform and EWAC Module in the year 2002. Subsequently TH Heavy (previously
known as Ramunia) was listed on Bursa Malaysia in 2005 and from there on THHE Fabricators
has secured contracts from Petronas Carigali, Shell, Talisman, Murphy, Exxon Mobil, Woodside
and more. THHE Fabricators have executed more than 16 modules & topside structures and 15
substructures fabrications. Moving forward, this company has moved our operations to a new
fabrication yard at Pulau Indah, Selangor.

ii) Process
a) QuestionTo prepare the question, we need to do some research about the company. We
searched from the internet about the company and prepared some questions
that we need to know and ask for the interviewee.
1. First draft question (please refer to the attachment 1)

Comment : Since this is the first draft so there are lots of
mistake on the question for example on the personal
profile the question that we are going to asked is:
‘what is your full name?’
The question is not relevant to be asked to the
interviewee. Other than that, there are lots of
grammatical errors for example:
Does TH Heavy Engineering has another
branches? If there any, where it is located?
Does TH Heavy Engineering have other branches?
If there any, where are they located?
2. Second draft question (please refer to the attachment 2)

Where : Level 5, Lecturer’s office.
Comment : There are a few questions that are not proper to be
asked in Part b which is Personal Profile for
example:
‘if you are being offered to another country, would
it be easy to handle to their standards?’
For part C, on the Research focus question there are
a parts of question that doesn’t suit to be asked for
example, the problems of the company.
3. Third draft question (please refer to the attachment 3)

Where : Lecturer’s home.
Comment : Most of the questions are suitable to ask during the
interview session but there a some of the mistake
and grammar error for example:
‘What is the meaning of TH Heavy Engineering?
And what is the TH heavy logo
‘What is the meaning of TH Heavy Engineering and
what does the logo represented?
In the second draft on part C questions, we changed
the question from ‘problems’ to ‘safety’ question.
And there are grammar error also which is
‘Does any safety precautions that the company
provided?’
‘Are there any safety precautions that the company
provides at the working site?’

Comment : For this draft the questions are all completed and
there is no grammar mistake. After the fourth draft
the researcher are given the company visit’s letter.

11.00 amThe researchers gathered at the UniKL BMI student’s parking lot.Recheck all things that need to be brought to the visit.

12.10 pmThe researchers registered as a visitor at the receptionist and heading to the corporate office of TH Heavy Engineering Berhad which is at Level 23.
12.15 pmMet and greeted the interviewee, Mr. Mohd Syahmi Mohamad which is one of the engineers at the TH Heavy Engineering Berhad.
12.20 pmThe interview session begin, the researchers started to ask Mr. Syahmi with the all the questions about the personal profile, company profile and our research focus.

A) Company profile
1. Q : What is the meaning of TH Heavy Engineering and what does the
logo represent?
A : Actually, TH Heavy is formerly known as Ramunia. It is changed
to TH Heavy Engineering which is the TH meaning is
Tabung Haji. The logo is an original logo of Tabung Haji.
2. Q : Who is the founder of this company?
A : The founder of this company is Datuk Azizan Bin Abd Rahman.
3. Q : Could you please explain to us the vision and mission of the
company?
A : The vision of this company is “ to be the preferred Engineering
and Marine EPCIC Contractor in the Region”.
4. Q : When did the company start its operation?
A : TH Heavy Engineering Berhad, formerly known as Ramunia
Holdings Berhad, was incorporated on 18 November 2003.

5. Q : Can you please briefly explain the main product or service offered
by TH heavy Engineering?
A : The service offered by TH Heavy Engineering is fabrication of
major steel structures, engineering works and provision of
offshore services for the oil and gas industry.

where are they located?
A : No.

A : So far there have no awards yet.
8. Q : What makes TH Heavy Engineering better as compared to the
competitors?

A : Commitment in providing quality products and services at
competitive prices and track record in project management
and delivery.
9. Q : Does this company plan to collaborate with international
companies?
A : This company doesn’t have any plan yet to collaborate with international whereas, this company had a secured
contract from PETRONAS Carigali, Shell, Talisman Murphy and Exxon Mobil
10. Q : What are the company’s plans for the next five years?
A : Moving forward, we have moved our operations to a new fabrication yard at Pulau Indah, Selangor and of course we
want to expand this company to international level.

11. Q : When did you start working with TH Heavy Engineering?
A : I started working with TH Heavy on October 2011.

12. Q : Why did you choose this company? What attracted you?
A : Because this company have related with my education background
and also my there are a suggestion from my friends.
13. Q : Could you please tell us about your academic background?
A : I did my diploma at Tati College Terengganu and my Bachelor at
UniKL MFI in Engineering Robotics.
14. Q : How would you relate your previous study with your current job
specifications?
A : It is not really related because I took a Robotics course in my
bachelor but then I work as Purchasing Equipment but in
time I’ve learnt many things.
15. Q : What is the biggest challenge that you had faced?
A : I have to face a vendor cases such as dealing with a fussy clients.
Other than that, I have to face with the subordinate that are
stubborn.
16. Q : Could you please tell us about your new project?
A : Platform Shell at Sarawak, Ranhill projects.
17. Q : What is your favorite project that you had handled at TH Heavy
Engineering?
A : Our current project which is Shell Platform in Sarawak because
they spent RM740 millions.
18. Q : How would you describe the experiences of working here?

A : The experience that I get is I have to handle a variety of customer
complaints because the equipment is delayed. Other than
that I get a new knowledge and have learn more about
working experience.
19. Q : What do you think is the most difficult thing about being an
engineer?
A : The most difficult thing about being an engineer is I need to know
the specification of the equipment that we supply to clients.
20. Q : How do you motivate yourself to be successful in this engineering
field?
A : By seeing the model of Top Management.

The interviewee started working at the TH Heavy Engineering on October 2011. He
chose this company because the course that he took is related to this company and it
also got recommendation from his friend. The biggest challenge that he had faced is
vendor cases dealing with fussy client. By seeing the model of top management can
lead him to be a successful engineer.

C) Research focus (Research and development)
Staff
21. Q : How many staff does this company have?
A : There are 300 plus staff working in this company.
22. Q : What are the qualifications and skills needed to be an engineer at
TH Heavy Engineering?
A : It is varying with the position applied but one of the qualifications
is 5 years experience in engineering field.
23. Q : How long are the working hours for the staff in this company?
A : From 9am to 5.30pm at the office and at the yard it is from 8 am to
8pm.

24. Q : Are there any facilities and benefits for staff provided by the
company?
A : Yes of course there are. The company provides a panel at the
hospital, give bonuses to workers and some of the
engineers have a car allowance.
25. Q : Does this company have their own corporate uniform or PPE?
A : Usually the corporate uniform is for the top management and
while PPE is wearing at the yard for safety.
Overall summary about staff:
In this company there is 300 or more staff. The qualification needed for engineer
position is at least five years experience in engineering field. The are may facilities
and benefits provided for their staff.

26. Q : What are the projects this company is handling currently?
A : The project that we currently handling is doing a platform for
SHELL at Sarawak.
27. Q : What are the company’s plans to improve the quality of the
projects?
A : First of all, client’s requirements are very important. We need to
meet the client’s requirement and the project should be
finished on time so the client with satisfy.

28. Q : How many projects are handled by this company in a year?
A : Depends on the project. Sometimes one project takes 1-2 years to
finish.
29. Q : How important is proper planning to increase the company’s
profits in terms of managing quality projects?
Overall summary about project:
This company is currently handling a platform for Shell at Sarawak. Usually there is more than
hundreds engineers are in charged for one big project.

A : Yes it is very to have proper planning for project because if we are
not meet the client’s requirement, they could fine us and
this will just increase the cost of the project and make a loss
to the company.
30. Q : How many engineers are in charged for one project?
A : For one project, there are 100 or more engineers in charged which
are divided into piping engineer, structure engineer, mechanical
engineer and electrical engineer.

Training
31. Q : Are there any internal training to be given to new employees?

A : The training to the new employees is depend on the project that
the employees handling.
32. Q : What type of training that company provides to the new
employees?
A : For the training, the company will usually hold a seminar (theory
and practical) and course and team building.

33. Q : Generally, how much cost is provided for new employees’ training
program?
A : This is also depends on project.
34. Q : Does this company send the employees overseas for training?
A : So far, not yet. We do all the training just around Malaysia.
35. Q : What do you think are the importance of sending the employees
for training?
A : To make them suitable with the working environment and easier
them to adapt with the company’s.

Safety
36. Q : How do you keep up to date with the information in relation with
safety and health in the company?
A : At the yard, we will do some briefing every morning to remind the
workers to put safety first.
Overall summary about training:
The company always holds training for the new employees every year. They will have
seminar and team building. This training can improve skills for employees.

37. Q : How would you train someone to safely use the equipment or
machines?
A : Usually, our worker that use machines or equipments are peoples
those experts because we send them to school for welder
and they are very experience in handling the machines.

38. Q : Are there any safety precautions that the company provides at the
working site?
A : Yes. We have safety rules and regulation at the yard and wearing
PPE is compulsory for all the workers.
39. Q : How important do you think is wearing PPE while working on
site?
A : It is very important wearing PPE while working on yard because
we don’t want any simple injury because it can affect the
progress of the project.
40. Q : How high is that the rate of safety and health in this company?
A : Of course the rate of safety and health in this company is very high
because we put safety first.

Overall summary about safety:
Every morning, they always have a briefing to remind workers to put safety first. They
also have safety rules and regulations at the yard. Wearing PPE is also compulsory for
the yard workers.
