*Night·stand , noun, a small low bedside table, typically having drawers. Not be confused with a one-night stand.

THE NIGHTSTAND IS BECOMING A NIGHTMARE! What if there was a device which could simplify this?

INSIGHTSHORIZON

Great sound at every moment, let it be their morning alarm, listening to their favourite radio station or just watching movies all afternoon in bed.

Legibility is a key deciding factor for the users during purchase, getting the screen size just right to tell the time from across the room or even in the morning without their spectacles.

Recharging their smartphone and wearable at the end of everyday has become routine, and the able to do this with ease by their bedside without having to worry about chargers or sockets.

They wanted to wake up better and naturally, hence just like a warm sunrise the lamp comes on in ascending soft glow to prepare your body subconsciously a few minutes prior to their alarm.

Tired of constantly having to turn the clock away before bed or change the screen brightness to avoid screen glare in their eyes, the horizons incorporated a simple light sensor that’s constantly monitor the users ambient lighting conditions to fine tune it for optimum comfort and legibility.

CHALLENGES HORIZON

Protecting the original design intent from analysis into development and various budgeting meetings with successfully achieving retails USD$99.

Minimising the number of parts by means of a single rubber unibody with zero external tool parting lines. Resolved it successfully using a seven core slider tooling.

Diffusing the brightness of the Lamps multiple LEDs to provide an even glow, while at the same time avoiding any internal shadows and hot spots. Solved using internally textured light panel.

Photograph+Post Production

Aesthetically appealing in maintaining the balance between large size requirements for acoustic performance and smallest foot print possible on the night stand.

CMF RESEARCH DEVELOPMENTCreating a special colour palette for India. Irfan Kachwalla / Primary Designer Andy Tsui / Project Manager

Page 13: Industrial Design Portfolio

COLOURS THAT UNITE 35,000,000 INDIANS

Indias cultural diversity adds to the complexity of picking a palette of colours that would be perceived well and acceptable, hence implementing the colours shared by their sport idols was a key opportunity prior to the Cricket World Cup. The project started of with introducing a single existing product in the limited edition colours, however with the positive response from the Indian market it soon expanded into a full range and brought more business to the company.

INSPIRATION GO

Small & Pocketable Proportions of the logoColourways for all days

The easily recognisable small orange JBL logo that’s been ever present on all our speakers you see at concerts, stadium or theatres since the past 60 years was the primary source for inspiration.

IDEATION GO

Acoustic mocks ups to hear the sound performance we would get with such a compact size. Boxes, little boxes on the hillside.

Sketch sessions exploring the possibility of integrated charging cables and fixation.

Exploration and refinement of the concept was done directly in 3D.

3D printing various sizes to help narrow down and get a real feel of the proportions.

Strength in simplicity, the rugged bumper protects the grille from getting scratched when face down.

Users can use their favourite music festivals backstage passes as the lanyard or just about anything to hang with it.

They can play music or use the mike for video conferencing with their friends. Even if they don’t have a fancy smartphone they can still connect their old iPods using an auxiliary cable.

Soundshift enables users to wirelessly connect multiple devices to the speaker and switch between them by simply pressing play.

MARKET RESEARCH In the store, we gained valuable insights from retailer and sales personnel regarding the users affinity, decision making process and behaviours.

CREATIVE TOOLS We organised all our analysis content into booklets to be able to efficiently infuse them during the creativity phase of the project

PROTOTYPE Working with completely new materials like fibre glass, concrete and foam we were able to create a realistic 1:1 Scale Model within two weeks.

USER PERCEPTIONS We interviewed multiple users across India, to hear how they perceived sense and simplicity, observe how culture influenced the insights.

Taking inspiration from the light bulb itself we created a versatile luminaire. A mysterious sculpture inside the home which came to life as the ambient glow revealed it self from behind the one way mirror.

PAUL GOETZ DESIGN DIRECTOR, GNOSIS [email protected]

“I had the pleasure of managing Irfan when he was our intern at Gnosis. His ability to create compelling form language and to clearly communicate complex ideas through excellent illustrations put him above and beyond most interns. He worked well with our team, handling the same work as our full time staff and contributing to a number of projects. He is focused, professional and easy to work with. I would happily work with Irfan again and would recommend him without hesitation.”

JAINEEL SHAH JUNIOR ID, CHAUHAN STUDIO [email protected] “He has a strong ability to absorb all details in his surroundings which helps him to summarize and find appropriate opportunities. He has strong illustration skills to communicate his idea quickly, as well as digital & verbal communication skills to express his thoughts. He is always curious and passionate about collecting artefacts around him which is reflected in his personality. A strong team player who is always motivating, involved and invested in the work he does. Irfan is spontaneous, adventurous and a risk taker. Definitely a person to meet or to work with.”

GIRISH LONE FOUNDER, DESIGNLIFE [email protected] “Irfan has worked with DesignLife, on one of the challenging projects for the Camera equipment. He has handled the Research, analysis & initial idea generation phase of the project, with me. He is sincere and analyses the brief well. I admire him for his work ethics and attitude towards design.
