Introduction

Principle

In this catalogue, Nidec describes the LSHT and FLSHT range of 3-phase induction safety motors for smoke extraction ventilation applications.All our smoke extraction motors have been designed for mixed use:- operation in continuous duty at an

ambient temperature (when operating in comfort mode)- use for a limited time at high temperature in the event of fire (when operating in safety mode)These motors, adapted to European safety standards, are designed to be

fitted on fans that are incorporated in smoke and heat extraction systems used mainly in tunnels, covered car parks, communal housing and public buildings such as shopping centres, museums, cinemas, theatres, hotels, offices, etc.

Smoke extractor fans fitted with LSHT and FLSHT motors are used to:

1) Make it easy to evacuate people and help the emergency services find their waySmoke is acknowledged to be the main cause of deaths when a fire occurs.The aim of smoke extraction is therefore to make access routes available so people can be evacuated and to help the emergency services find their way around. Lack of visibility is the main difficulty encountered by firemen when responding to a fire in a tunnel or covered car park.

Smoke extractor fans therefore create a smoke-free layer above ground level and improve the conditions for evacuating people and animals, allowing the fire to be tackled while it is still in its early stages.

2) Prevent fire and heat spreading to protect people and propertyThe smoke extraction ventilation system removes the hot gases released by the fire in its full expansion phase and minimises fire damage by reducing roof temperatures and preventing the fire spreading sideways.

It is therefore essential that these smoke and heat extraction motors operate reliably each time they are used throughout their service life on a site, which is why they are adapted to meet European safety standards and comply with European smoke extraction standards.

Quality commitment

those designed to operate in specific environments are also approved or certified by the following organisations: LCIE, DNV, EFECTIS, BSRIA, TUM, LGAI, which check their technical performance against the various standards or recommendations.

Quality assurance - Certification

EN 12101-3 SMOKE EXTRACTION

As of 2005, European legislation states that all motors fitted on fans designed to extract smoke, whether in covered car parks, tunnels or public buildings, must display the CE mark as a proof of compliance with European standard EN12101-3.

This compliance of our whole range of smoke extraction motors has been verified during fire resistance tests conducted on load testing benches or fans by various approved laboratories certified at European level.

Our smoke extraction motors are approved for use at 200°C/120 min, 250°C/120 min, 300°C/60 min, 300°C/120 min

and 400°C/120 min, as confirmed by our certificates; the approval numbers are engraved on the motor nameplates (see Installation and maintenance section).

TERMINAL BOX VERSIONPlaced as standard on top of the motor near the drive end, it is fitted with one or more metal cable glands.The standard position of the cable gland is on the right, seen from the drive end but, owing to the symmetrical construction of the box, it can usually be placed in any of the 4 directions, as per table 1.If required, the terminal box may be fitted in a different position (on the left or right as seen from the drive end, and at the DE or NDE of the motor housing).

WIRING DIAGRAMSAll standard motors are supplied with a wiring diagram in the terminal box.The diagrams normally used are shown opposite.On the following pages are outline diagrams with internal and external connections.

EARTH TERMINALThis is situated inside the terminal box. Consisting of a threaded stud with a hexagonal nut, it is used to connect cables with cross-sections at least as large as the cross-section of the phase conductors.It is indicated by the sign: in the terminal box moulding.A second earth terminal is fitted on the motor.
