Overview The following report comprised 100 cases of reported UFO sightings & related phenomena collected throughout the year 2011 by The BETA UFO group1. The data is collected from various reports coming in through the group’s mailing list; website and social media pages as well as from direct/second hand testimonies received privately by researchers/investigators associated with the group. As it was with previous reports, one major constraint in the 2011 data collection lies with the fact that it might very well represent only a small portion of all UFO sightings that took place in the country throughout the year. It has been noted from time to time that people do tend to report cases through other means than BETA UFO. A significant number of reports also tend to come up years after it happened as people are reluctant to talk or don’t know who to share their sighting experience with. The major aim of the analysis is still to provide a general outlook of the country’s sighting data that can function as a stepping stone for more detailed future studies. Of particular interest is the outlining of significant patterns within the compiled data and the comparison of these annual patterns. As it has been with previously made reports, the data analysis presented is focused on three main features that are considered to be a quite basic and simple approach in UFO sighting data analysis. The three features are:

• types of sightings • regional distribution of sightings • SVP rating measurement.

Key Patterns Several significant patterns found in the 2011 data are presented below. These key patterns are considered to be significant based on comparison with the 2010 compiled data as well as older data available in the BETA UFO database.

The number of reported sightings has increased substantially from 50 cases in 2010 to 100 cases in 2011. The increase still appeared to denote increased awareness of the UFO phenomenon among the general public that has been developing since 2009. It also appeared to indicate a real increase of actual UFO phenomenon occurring in 2011.

One UFO-related phenomenon that has captivated the country’s attention and imagination in 2011 is the crop circle formation. Three of such formations appeared in rural Central Java Province in January, and were investigated by BETA UFO as well as scientists from a local university and government agencies. Although the phenomenon has remained an unresolved controversy, it has continued to stir public and media interest on the subject of UFOs and UFO-related phenomena across the country.

1 The data compiling was begun in late 2011 and finished by August 2012. The latest revised version (as presented in Appendix A1 & A2) was finished in November 2012. Revision was mostly made on details of the reports. BETA UFO itself is a network of various organizations/groups interested in the study of the UFO phenomenon in Indonesia. The primary groups involved to date are BETA UFO and UFONESIA.

Page 5: Indonesian UFO Case Review 2011

5 Indonesian UFO Case Review 2011

A slight increase is noted in the number of reported triangular shaped objects sightings for 2011. While 2010 saw 4 sightings, 2011 saw 5 reports of this specific sighting. The data also shows relatively consistent pattern as it was in 2009 and 2010, whereas the majority of reports came from witnesses in Java Island.

As it was in 2010, one reported sighting case has once again been identified as a hoax in 2011. The hoax was done in the form of a recent crop circle formation, a phenomenon that had captivated the country’s attention and imagination earlier in the year. Despite the relatively low number of known/reported cases the incident appear to reiterate past assessment that continuous perpetration of hoaxes might become a persistent pattern in UFO sightings/related phenomena reporting in the country.

The majority of reported sightings compiled in 2011 (42 cases/42%) involved an FB type phenomenon, just as it was in 2009 and 2010. As it was in 2010, second and third positions in terms of sighting numbers are still occupied respectively by the AN category (39 cases/39%) and the MA category (15 cases/15%). Meanwhile, the year’s reported sightings identified as natural phenomena (IFO) have decreased to 3 cases. These were analyzed as actual misidentification of optical/photographic effect (i.e. black sun effect and smudged lens) and probable ordinary airplanes.

As many as 69% of the UFO & UFO-related phenomena cases reported in 2011 were from Java Island. Although still fitting the pattern of 2009 and 2010, the number also showed over 20% increase of reports coming in from the region compared to a 42% recorded in 2010. This significant increase might be triggered by the highly publicized finding of crop circle formations in Central Java, in January 2011. At second place, a slight change has taken place as reports coming in from Sumatra and Bali Islands are now tied in the same place (8 cases/8% for each region). A noted change is identified in the sub-regional data distribution. Contrary to 2010 data, the majority of cases (72%) are now reported from the suburban/country areas. In the urban areas, the cities of Jakarta and Denpasar, now figured quite prominently as areas with a lot of UFO sighting reports (each with 10 [10%] and 5 [5%] cases respectively).

The SVP rating for reported cases compiled in 2011 showed that most of them (35 cases/35%) falls within the ‘hard to explain’ category. These are cases that do not easily fit into any known natural explanation or phenomena, including man-made technologies and their resultant effects, without major changes of multiple parameters within the circumstances of each case. The data also, once again, show continuing increase in the number of cases involving site visitation by people who are either familiar with/a reliable investigator of the UFO phenomenon (from 3 cases in 2010 to 10 in 2011).

Analysis Types of sightings The majority of reported UFO sighting cases compiled in 2011 (42 cases/42%) consisted of FB type phenomenon (See Figure 1), just as it was in 2010. Coming at second place (39

Page 6: Indonesian UFO Case Review 2011

6 Indonesian UFO Case Review 2011

cases/39%) is the AN category that comprises anomalies such as amorphous lights and unexplained explosions/sounds/ground impressions. In third place, still in the same annual pattern seen in 2010, is the MA category (15 cases/15%) that stands for sightings of objects displaying disrupted trajectories (maneuvers).

50 Figure 1 – Types of Sightings in 2011 Standing for a sub-category of sightings where unidentified objects are seen ‘flying by’ through the sky, the FB category encompassed in the 2011 report reveals intriguing data with colorful ‘details’. Some of the objects sighted (as it was with the 2009 and 2010 data) are reported to be appearing and disappearing out of nowhere, as well as changing their shapes midair. One case of particular interest is when an object is reported to have appeared and disappeared abruptly, followed shortly afterwards by the appearance of a strange low-flying plane. Table-1 lists the various, colorful descriptions that comprised the FB1 classification in this report. Meanwhile, the AN category cases filed in 2011 mostly involves groups of lights/objects with bright lights with a fairly rich and differing details (such as the types of colors and/or movement seen during the sighting). Table-2 lists the many different descriptions and circumstances revealed by witnesses in the data compiled for 2011. As the data showed, significant portion of the AN cases in 2011 (8 cases/20.51%) involved brightly-lit objects sighted with a specific shape (sphere-like/circular/oblong etc). At second place (5 cases/12.82%) are objects sighted as being grouped together in specific formation, some of which also shown peculiar movements. With a slight difference in detail, this would also actually encompass two other case (Case No 16 and 26) where multiple objects were sighted together, and in a formation, making the total into 7 cases (17.95%). The BETA UFO database in 2010 has seen cases of grouped objects, but never in the extent of appearing as a major pattern in the sighting group. Back in 2010, the sighting of objects that are grouped together did constitute a notable pattern emerging in the compiled data, with a total of 5 cases (29.41%) reported. As underlined above, the pattern now seemed to have evolved, quite significantly.

Total 42 (42%) One significant change in the AN data group is of course the inclusion of crop circle phenomena in it. The phenomena have become a captivating issue for the country’s attention and imagination throughout 2011. The crop circle formations appeared in rural Central Java Province, in January, and were investigated by BETA UFO as well as scientists from a local university and government agencies. Despite remaining an unresolved controversy, it has continued to stir public and media interest on the subject of UFOs and UFO-related phenomena up until now.

Total 39 (39%) As it was in 2010, the MA category again showed descriptions as ‘colorful’ as the other categories. One of the cases (Case No.88) is of particular interest as it appears to have involved a rather close up sighting of disc-shaped objects that is quite rarely reported. Overall, the cases reported in this category gave a clear indication of apparent intelligent control of the sighted objects. Again, as it was in 2010, all of the reports denote maneuvers that defy any ‘literally natural’ explanation (i.e. with the absence of a controlling system).

Page 9: Indonesian UFO Case Review 2011

Reports coming in for 2011 also included some cases that have been assessed as Identified Flying Objects (IFO) and HOAX entries. The IFO entries involved 2 cases of misidentified optical effect; one possible case of misidentified natural or man-made object; and one case that appeared to constitute an effort at creating a hoax. Interestingly, the hoax is fund out to be an attempt of exploiting increased public interest on crop circle phenomenon, for a commercial advertisement

Total 15 (15%) In continuation of last year’s format change, this year’s report also includes cases regarded as ‘unclear’ due to lack of information (as can be seen in Annex A2). These cases represent the growing number of reports that seemed to indicate a strange reluctance to reveal more details to honest inquiries by BETA UFO researchers, as well as possible efforts at perpetrating hoaxes. It is interesting to note that here the number of cases filed has actually increased to 9, compared to 5 cases in 2010. Regional Distribution As it was in 2009 and 2010, this year’s compiled data showed that a predominant number of cases (69 entries/69%) were reported from Java Island. Although still fitting the pattern of 2009 and 2010, the number also showed over 20% increase of reports coming in from the region compared to the 42% recorded in 2010. This significant increase might be triggered by the highly publicized finding of crop circle formations in Central Java, in January 2011. At second place, a slight change has taken place as reports coming in from Sumatra and Bali Islands are now tied in the same place (8 cases/8% for each region). A noted change is also identified in the sub-regional data distribution. Contrary to 2010 data, the majority of cases (72%) are now reported from the suburban/country areas. In the urban areas, the

cities of Jakarta and Denpasar, now figured quite prominently as areas with a lot of UFO sighting reports (each with 10 and 5 cases respectively). In Java Island, the three regions with the most reported cases in 2011, now comprises West Java Province (17 cases/24.64%), Central Java Province (14 cases/20.29%) and Yogyakarta Special Region (11 cases/15.94%). Apart from West Java Province, the composition have changed quite a bit compared to 2010, when the capital city of Jakarta still figures prominently as the second most prolific source of sighting reports. SVP Rating SVP rating assessed for the data compiled in 2011 showed that most of them 35 cases/35%) falls within the ‘quite hard to explain’ category (category 103). These are cases that do not easily fit into any known natural explanation or phenomena, including man-made technologies and their resultant effects, without major changes of multiple parameters within the circumstances of each case. The data also, once again, show continuing increase in the number of cases involving site visitation by people who are either familiar with/a reliable investigator of the UFO phenomenon (from 3 cases in 2010 to 10 cases in 2011). The compiled 2011 reports also showed 20 cases where natural explanations would require major alteration of one or several parameters (category 102). Overall, as underlined in 2010 report, these included cases where the possibility of ordinary aviation technology misidentified as UFOs, for example, are taken into account while still acknowledging the fact that such a chance would need major alterations of the sighting circumstances. Alterations, in turn, that also create even more peculiarities that needed –rather than provided- more answers.

SVP data for 2011 shows 10 cases that involved site visitation by a person who is familiar with the UFO phenomenon, or is a reliable investigator of the UFO phenomenon. This marks a significant increase compared to only 3 cases in 2010 and 2 cases in 2009. The rising number of site visitation denotes BETA UFO’s ongoing effort to gather first hand field

Page 12: Indonesian UFO Case Review 2011

12 Indonesian UFO Case Review 2011

data of reported sighting cases. It also, as stated in 2010, marked the group’s growing reputation as an organization trusted to provide clarification of issues regarding alleged UFO phenomena. Conclusion Some fairly significant changes are obviously emerging in the overall picture of the monitoring and studying of UFO phenomena in the country, in 2011. A general assessment of the year’s compiled data shows that public attention and interest on the subject has continued to grow. The finding of crop circle formations in Central Java, in January 2011, has also played an important part of peaking the public’s interest on the subject across the country. Of even greater significance is the fact that it has also attracted the interest of mainstream local scientists, rather than just layman speculations. Delving into the more intrinsic aspect of the data, there is also, obviously, significant changes emerging in the pattern of information collected throughout 2011. As underlined in the 2010 report, the patterns would certainly help to point further research of the phenomena into clearer or more intriguing directions. One such direction that have yet to be explored, and is of particular interest, would be the research as to why Central Java (and some other alleged regions across the country) witnessed the appearance of major crop circle formations, in 2011. The crop circle phenomena also marked a new development in local UFO investigation, with the involvement of mainstream scientist in its investigation. Although formal authorities and mainstream media continues to treat the phenomena, and the subject of UFO, as a ‘non-issue’, the interest that the crop circle formations have triggered from the scientific community appears to have slowly changed public perception about how ‘real’ the phenomena really is. It remains to be seen if the local scientific community will eventually develop some level of continuous cooperation with UFO study groups such as BETA UFO.

Annex A1 - Reported Sightings of UFO and UFO-related Phenomena in Indonesia - 2011 No. Time and Location Event and Circumstances Classification2

Note

1.

1 January Palu City, Central Sulawesi Province; midnight.

A group of witnesses reported sighting a formation of light on the night sky above the city’s Otista Street area. The formation of lights was described as being red in color and formed a large triangular shape in the sky. The object is said to be sighted for about 5 minutes. No photograph or video recording was known to be made of the sighting.

AN1 104

The reporting witness alleged to have had a ‘mysterious’ (sic) experience in relation with UFO phenomenon. No further details were disclosed to BETA UFO regarding the claim.

2.

1 January Bedahan Sub-district, Sawangan District, Depok Municipality, West Java Province midnight.

A witness took a photograph of an amorphous red light that is reported to be witnessed by multiple witnesses, during new year’s eve 2011. The light is said to have appeared suddenly in the sky, before descending slowly to the ground and disappeared behind nearby tree lines. The strange light is also said to have ‘occurred’ at least 7 times during the course of the night (around 11 PM until midnight), and is a phenomenon said to take place repeatedly every year, for the past 6 years. Locals appear to believe that the phenomenon, known locally as the ‘sinar situ gugur sawangan’, is a supernatural one, although it remains unclear what locally- perceived significance has been attributed to the appearance of the lights.

AN1 103

The witness reportedly took a photograph of one of the lights using a BlackBerry Onyx -9700 mobile phone. The picture has since been submitted to BETA UFO and shows lack of detailed/clear exposure of the object’s shape, background and any general feature of the landscape that could help distinguish the object’s relative size or distant from the ground.

3.

1 January Gegerkalong Sub-district, Sukasari District, Bandung City, West Java Province; 00:02 AM.

Several witnesses reportedly saw two red lights flying in the sky, during the peak of the new year’s eve fireworks. The two lights were seen flying in a circular motion for about 10 minutes, before finally making a sharp turn upwards, while leaving behind a burst of green light.

MA1 103

2 The classification refers to the system of classification expounded by Jacques Valle, categorizing the UFO and UFO-related phenomena into 20 sub- types from 5 major types (AN for Anomaly; MA for maneuvers; FB for fly by; CE for close encounters) as can be seen in his 1990 book “Confrontations”. The system is also complemented by a three-digit numeric credibility rating known as the SVP rating. See Annex C for details of the classification system.

4.

1 January Pondok Pinang Sub-district, Kebayoran Lama District, South Jakarta region, Jakarta; at 12:05 AM.

Several witnesses (2-3 people) saw a formation of red and purplish lights in the sky just minutes after new year’s eve. The objects were reportedly seen first as 4 lights grouped in a spade-like formation. The lights were then joined by three others that seemed to have appeared out of nowhere, forming a kite-shaped formation. The lights remained locked in the formation for about 1 minute before moving on a northern course towards downtown Jakarta. The first 4 lights then break away from formation and disappeared while the remaining 3 lights continued to move slowly north until disappearing from view.

MA1 103

5.

2 January Baler Bale Agung Village, Negara District, Jembrana Regency, Bali Island, Bali Province; 7:30 PM.

A witness reported sighting a sphere (‘ball’) shaped object flying by and maneuvering in the sky, from his house. The object was first sighted moving in what looked like a Northbound trajectory before suddenly turning towards the witness’ position. The object then maneuvered away out of the witness sight in tremendous speed. The whole sighting lasted for about a minute and 15 seconds.

MA1 104

The witness first thought the object was a regular star, until it started making maneuvers in the night sky.

6.

8 January Arjawinangun District, Cirebon Regency, West Java Province; midnight.

A group of 2 to 3 witnesses reportedly saw a strange bright light flying in the sky across some paddy rice fields in the area. The object was seen flying towards the East, and has a shape resembling a triangle. The object was sighted for about 10 seconds.

FB1 103

7.

10 January Rogojampi District, Banyuwangi Regency, East Java Province; 3:30 PM.

A witness reported to have seen a triangular-shaped object flying slowly across the sky above the city, for about 1 minute. The object is also said to have been spotted several times in the same area

8.

12 January Lubuk Basung District, Agam Regency, West Sumatera Province; 7:30 PM.

Groups of witnesses allegedly saw a bright light, shaped like a sphere, appearing suddenly in the sky. The sighting, lasted for about 2 minutes, was reported to be experienced by two different groups of witnesses on different locations. The witness has supposedly managed to record the sighting (for about 27 seconds) with a mobile phone camera but has not submitted the video to BETA UFO.

AN1 102

9.

12 January Banda Aceh City, Aceh Special Region (exact location unknown); 9:30 PM.

At least five witnesses reportedly sighted two strange objects in the night sky above their home, in Banda Aceh, on 12 January 2011. The first object was reported to have looked like a moving star, with bright pulsating light. The second object, seen shortly after the first one, was sighted flying by in tremendous speed at the same direction as the first object and disappeared from view in a matter of seconds.

FB1 103

10.

15 January Borobudur temple, Magelang Regency, Central Java Province; daylight (exact time unknown).

A witness took photographs of the temple during a family holiday. As the photographs were later uploaded into computer, the witness spotted a shot with a strange object flying in the sky that was not seen when the photograph was taken.

AN1 101

The witness submitted a photograph of the object suspected to be a UFO. BETA UFO initial analysis suggested the object could be a bird.

11.

16 January Kalasan District, Sleman Regency, Yogyakarta Special Region; 1:20 PM.

A local administration staff member in the regency took scenery photographs of a place known as the Hargodumilah Hill. When the photographs were uploaded into a computer the witness noticed a strange, roundish object flying by in the sky in one of the photographs. The photo has since attracted attention from local media, particularly in speculation of its connection to the crop circle phenomena about a week earlier in the vicinity of the Hargodumilah Hill.

FB1 102

The photograph has been published by the JPNN (Jawa Pos News Network) news agency, and showed a blurry object quite a distance away in the sky. The published photograph is already cropped and showed portion of an unfinished construction work in the foreground that was located closer to the photographer.

BETA UFO first received the information of a crop circle pattern reportedly appearing somewhere in the Central Java region between 23 and 24 January 2011. It wasn’t until later in the day, after the buzz of confusing information on where exactly the pattern had emerged, did BETA UFO managed to get a fixed idea of the location and investigated them on 24 January 2011, as follows: Jogo Tirto Village, Berbah District, Sleman Regency; Yogyakarta Special Region; Srimartani Village, Piyungan District, Bantul Regency; Yogyakarta Special Region; and Banyusari Village, Tegalrejo District, Magelang Regency; Central Java Province

AN2 433

While details of BETA UFO’s investigation will be published in a separate special report it can be said here that the phenomena in Yogyakarta Special Region and Central Java Province did show intriguing features commonly attributed to genuine Crop Circles. It has also brought up interesting reaction from local scientists who assumed that the phenomenon was created by naturally occurring plasma vortex.

26 January Kelapa Gading Sub-district, North Jakarta Sub-region, Jakarta; (exact time unknown)

A member of BETA UFO was alerted through a Black Berry messenger group message, in late January 2011, of an alleged UFO sighting in the Kelapa Gading area. The message was traced back to at least two different photographs (supposedly taken by two different people) showing a disc-like object ‘hovering’ near two buildings in the bustling business/commerce area. The photographs were known to have been posted in a popular online forum (Kaskus; http://www.kaskus.co.id/search_result.php?q=UFO+kelapa+Gading+&sa=).

FB1 103

It is unclear whether the photographers actually sighted the object when making their photographs or not. A visit to the area where the photographs were taken suggested that there was no advertisement ‘balloon’ placed on any of the surrounding buildings’ rooftops. Moreover, no airplanes have also been known to pass the area.

24 February Cipularang Toll Road, West Java Province; 7 PM.

A witness heading to Jakarta from Bandung on the Cipularang Toll Road saw what is reported to be an object with blue pulsating light in the sky. The actual outline/shape of the object was not seen in the dark night sky, but its bluish light was said to be a quite prominent feature in the sky. The light is said to be pulsating in a peculiar way, as it fades slowly and then shine brightly back again in an abrupt manner. The object was seen high in the sky, omitting the possibility that it was a tower beacon lamp or anything resembling a tower light.

AN1 103

The witness reportedly queried a pilot as to whether an airplane could have such a peculiar pulsating blue light, and was told that no known airplane would have a single blue light, pulsating with such peculiar mode as seen by the witness.

27 February Pontianak City, West Kalimantan Province; 6 - 8 PM.

A single eyewitness reportedly sighted a strange object hovering in the sky, at about 35 degree elevations from the horizon, above Pontianak City, on the night of February 27th. The object is described as a bluish light that pulsated on regular intervals from bright to dim. It was bright enough to still be visible inside the clouds and in the overcast sky where no stars could even be seen. The witness then took a photograph of the object using a Fuji Finepix S2500 HD camera, at maximum zooming (18 times), which still could not produce a clear image of the object. The witness is also assured that the object was not a satellite or a star.

AN1 103

The photograph made by the witness was first published in the Indonesian UFO Hunter group’s Facebook page. The photograph has since been enhanced to try and show a clearer view of the object, but only resulted in outlining an amorphous looking bluish light.

The husband stopped the vehicle and supposedly had a clearer view of the object that looked like the letter ‘X’, moving in a circular motion in the night sky.

AN1 103

The witnesses reportedly left the sighting area because they had stopped until nearly midnight to watch the object. It wasn’t clear if they had consciously stopped to watch the object for several hours or if they suddenly realized that it was midnight. Efforts to contact the witnesses for further details have yielded no response.

Several witnesses saw a single star-like point of light flying by in the sky, from West to East. The object was seen pulsating slowly, more brightly than regular stars, and moving in the general speed of an airplane. However, there was no noticeable sound that characterizes a regular airplane. The object was seen for about 5 minutes before disappearing behind some clouds.

FB1 102

Witness argued that the object could have not been a satellite as it was much brighter than regular stars.

34.

14 March Permata Hijau residential & business area, Kebayoran Lama District, South Jakarta region, Jakarta; 6 PM

A witness reportedly saw a triangular shaped object in the sky around Permata Hijau residential and business area. A group of witnesses reportedly sighted a large circle of light, comprising yellow-green-blue-red and white lights, moving on an eastern heading in the sky. The object was sighted for about 15 minutes.

FB1 103

One of the witnesses reportedly tried to take a photograph of the object, but couldn’t get a clear shot.

37.

31 March Suka Ikhlas Hamlet, Sukatani Village, Cilawu District, Garut Regency, West Java Province; exact time unknown

A round shaped object, flying in the sky, was supposedly recorded by accident in a mobile phone. The object was reported to be invisible to the eyes and can only be seen in the mobile phone camera. The recording was supposed to have lasted for 15 minutes.

FB1 101

The fact that the object could only be seen in the mobile phone’s camera, suggest that it might be the result of a visual aberration related to the camera’s optics.

38.

12 April Cipedak Sub-district, Jagakarsa District, South Jakarta region; midnight

A witness saw a single light moving across the sky in a zigzag pattern. The object emanated a red colored light that turned into blue and was observed for about 15 - 20 seconds before disappearing abruptly from view. Prior to the sighting the witness’ dog had reportedly shown fearful and irritated behavior. The witness himself felt a string of strange physical sensations after the sighting (i.e. having all of his bodily hairs raised for 5 - 10 minutes, followed by trouble in breathing). The witness woke up the next day feeling like someone who has not had enough sleep. He also reportedly has a hazy recollection of a dreamlike fighting against something unidentifiable. The witness proceeded to tell the story by phone to his fiancé who claimed she could only hear 20% of the story, as the witness voice changed halfway into what sounded to her like a distorted robot/machine-like voice.

FB2 103

The strange circumstances with the telephone call could just be an incidental trouble with the telephone line/network. However, the physical effects experienced by the witness’ dog and himself have yet to be fully investigated.

39.

15 April Salaman District, Magelang Regency, Central Java Province; 8 PM.

On 15 April, a witness spotted a bright, circular light appearing abruptly in the sky. The object, reported to be slightly bigger in size compared to a star, was moving towards the ground and was only visible for about 1 second.

AN1 101

Although the witness did not specify whether the object’s trajectory was horizontal or sloping to the ground, the fact that it was seen flying towards the ground could imply that it is a meteorite.

40.

16 April Salaman District, Magelang Regency, Central Java Province; 4 -5 AM.

On 16 April, at around 4 - 5 AM, the same witness from the previous case saw the light again on Jl. Singosari (near an area known as ‘simpang lima’). This time the object was described as emanating a brighter light and moving really fast. After the object disappeared from view a smoke-like trail was also spotted in the sky, but it quickly disappeared from view just as the brightly lit object.

FB1 102

Several months before, the same witness claimed to have seen a green light hovering in the sky for about 10 minutes, in the same area. The object was supposedly spotted again 2 days later, but the witness did not remember to note or report the events.

41.

21 April Jeruju region, Pontianak City, West Kalimantan Province; exact time unknown.

A single witness reportedly saw a green light flying by in the sky, while riding on a motorcycle. The object, seen with a trail behind it, was reported to be flying horizontally in the sky before it split into 2 parts and disappeared from view.

FB1 102

The witness never made it clear whether the sighting took place at night or day, although the prominent reference to the color of the object would suggest a night time sighting. The way the object split-up into 2 parts might indicate a meteorite.

May (exact date unknown) Mlandangan Hamlet, Minomartani Village, Ngaglik District, Sleman Regency, Yogyakarta Special Region (exact time unknown).

An alleged crop circle phenomenon was reported to have occurred in a paddy field at Mlandangan Hamlet, Minomartani Village. Press coverage on 18 may suggested that the phenomenon had been noticed by villagers several days before it made the news, and that it was shaped almost like a footprint. BETA UFO investigators who went to the scene revealed that there was hardly any noticeable pattern shaped by the flattened paddy plants to support the assertion made by the press. Two main facts learned by the investigators were that there was strong wind and heavy rain prior to the occurrence of the alleged crop circle pattern, and that all of the flattened plants are facing one direction (Northwards).

AN2 132

Several photographs have been made of the alleged crop circle pattern. Soil and plants tests have yet to be carried out. Villagers in the area suggested nothing unusual was noticed by anyone prior to the finding of the alleged crop circle.

A passenger on a chartered shuttle van heading to Bandung City reportedly saw an odd looking object in the sky from one of the vehicle’s window. The object was assumed to be quite large as it was quite a distant away and yet still visible to the witness. However, no other passengers other than the witness were reportedly aware of the object. The sighted object itself is said to look like a black-colored triangle that hovers in the sky, without any sound or light. The witness is also assured that it wasn’t a simple building decoration or balloon, as he has made the same trip many times before and never seen the object. In addition, during the trip back to Jakarta the witness claimed that he did not see the object again.

FB1 104

The witness did not have time to take a photograph of the object but managed to draw a sketch that was submitted to the BETA UFO Facebook page. The sketch, depicting a black triangle in the sky above some buildings, suggested a fairly large sized object. Annex A3 – IFOs and Hoax in Indonesia - 2011 No. Location Time Event and Circumstances Classification Note

A

5 February Pemali District, Bangka Belitung Province. Noon

A junior high school student was reported by the local press to have photographed a strange object flying in the sky as she was pointing her mobile phone to the sun. The object looked like a shadow of the planet Saturn, tipped-over on one end of its ring. The object was reportedly sighted for 8 minutes, but was only visible through the mobile phone camera lens

IFO 100

The phenomenon has been analyzed by BETA UFO as a simple black sun effect (BSE) case.

B

6 March Menara BCA building, 42nd Floor, Jl. M.H. Thamrin, Central Jakarta region, Jakarta.

10 AM

A witness took a photograph of a nearby building and saw a strange object in the processed image, seemingly hovering in the air near the building that was the focus of the photograph. At initial analysis BETA UFO suggested the possibility that it might be nothing more than a smudge either in the camera lens or in the building’s window.

IFO 100

The witness has submitted a follow-up report stating that the object was indeed a smudge on the building’s window, as predicted by BETA UFO.

C

21 August Duren Sawit District, East Jakarta region, Jakarta. 07:26 PM

A group of witnesses saw a formation of lights in the sky, in the Duren Sawit area. The light formation, sighted for about 6 minutes long, were said to be making maneuvers in the sky. The witness did not disclose any other details of the reported sighting.

IFO 100

The lack of details in the report puts this sighting in a probable IFO category. Formation of lights, even when it is seen making maneuvers, could point to a number of plausible normal phenomena (one of which would be jet fighters on routine patrol or training around the city perimeter).

4 May Delta Mas City residential complex, Cikarang Municipality, Bekasi Regency, West Java Province

exact time

unknown

BETA UFO was made aware of a purported crop circle phenomena occurring on a paddy field near the Delta Mas, Cikarang area, on 16 May. Further investigation and local press coverage revealed that the formation was actually made on 4 May, by a group suspected to be an advertising agency. Villagers revealed that they were paid some money to let the people create the crop circle formation on their paddy field. The crop circle formation has since been identified used in a TV commercial for a snack product.

HOAX 230

Some photographs and video recordings have been made of the man-made crop circle in Cikarang. This includes photographs made by BETA UFO investigators that found some of the plants have been broken rather than bended down to the ground. The very first video posted on Youtube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ya2LL0EiZfM) has since been removed after being identified by BETA UFO as an effort of misleading public perception into thinking that the formation might be real (perhaps in an effort to make a viral marketing campaign). Another video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=sqskYoO7WuA) clearly showed the use of the crop circle formation on a TV-advertising.

Annex C – Vallee’s Data Classification System3 The Vallee data classification system is a system used to categorize the various types of UFO and paranormal experiences invented by Dr Jacques Vallee. It is now used more often instead of the forerunner, The Hynek Classification System (created by Prof. J. Allen Hynek), since it gives readers a more detailed summary of a case. This is Vallee’s attempt to unify his classification system with Hynek’s, and to incorporate those "psychic" or otherwise anomalous reports which he believes have a connection with the UFO phenomenon, and to regularize the classification system. The categories are as follows: AN1 are anomalies that do not have lasting physical effects, such as amorphous lights or unexplained explosions. AN2 are anomalies with lasting physical effects, such as some poltergeist phenomena, apports (materialized objects), and areas of flattened grass. AN3 are anomalies with associated entities. This class could include reports of ghosts, yetis, and other instances of cryptozoology as well as elves and spirits. AN4 are those anomalous reports in which witnesses experience personal interaction with entities in the reality of the entities themselves. They include near-death experiences, religious miracles and visions, and many cases of out-of-body experiences. AN5 are cases of anomalous injuries or deaths, such as spontaneous combustion or unexplained wounds or even permanent healing,

3 Information on J. Vallee’s system can be found (among other places) in http://ufo-database.blogspot.com/2009/03/jacques-vallee-classification-of-ufo.html; http://www.ufoevidence.org/documents/doc1553.htm and http://www.bibliotecapleyades.net/esp_autor_vallee.htm#Additional_Information

Page 42: Indonesian UFO Case Review 2011

42 Indonesian UFO Case Review 2011

FB1 is a simple sighting of a UFO "flying by" in the sky, the category most frequently reported. FB2 is a flyby accompanied by physical evidence. FB3 is a flyby of an object accompanied by the observation of beings on board. FB4 is a flyby where the witness experienced a transformation of his or her reality into the reality of the object or its occupants. FB5 would be a flyby as a result of which the witnesses would suffer permanent injuries or deaths. MA1 gathers those UFO observations that involve an object with a discontinuous trajectory (such as a drop, a maneuver, or a loop). MA2 includes those cases that give rise to physical effects in addition to a discontinuous trajectory. MA3 contains the cases of objects with discontinuous trajectories when beings are observed on board. MA4 covers instances of maneuvers accompanied by a sense of transformation of reality for the percipient. MA5 is a maneuver as a result of which the witnesses suffer permanent injury or death. CE1 is the class of objects seen on the ground or at a short distance to the observer. CE2 is the class of close encounters in which physical effects or traces were present. CE3 is the class of close encounters that involve "entities" or "occupants". CE4 encompasses the abduction reports in which the witness has not only seen the occupants but claims to have extensively interacted with them inside their craft. CE5 encompasses cases of Close Encounters in which the witnesses have suffered permanent injuries or other physiological effects, including death. SVP RATING As an addition to the classification system Vallee also added credibility ratings."Marks" out of four are given for the three categories of source reliability (first digit), site visit (second digit) and possible explanations (third digit). A rating of 222 or higher indicates the case was reported by a reliable source, the site has been visited and a natural explanation would require a major alteration of at least one parameter. SOURCE RELIABILITY RATING 0 Unknown or unreliable source. 1 Report attributed to a known source of unknown or uncalibrated reliability. 2 Reliable source, secondhand. 3 Reliable source, firsthand. 4 Firsthand personal interview with the witness by a source of proven reliability. SITE VISIT RATING 0 No site visit, or answer unknown. 1 Site visit by a casual person not familiar with the phenomena. 2 Site visited by persons familiar with the phenomena. 3 Site visit by a reliable investigator with some experience. 4 Site visit by a skilled analyst. POSSIBLE EXPLANATIONS RATING 0 Data consistent with one or more natural causes. 1 Natural explanation requires only slight modification of the data. 2 Natural explanation requires major alteration of one parameter. 3 Natural explanation requires major alteration of several parameters. 4 No natural explanation possible, given the evidence.
