SOUTH MOLUCCAS The sovereignty of Indonesia was established on December 27, 1949. The new central government of the Republic of Indonesia did not immediately unite all the islands of Indonesia. On April 25, 1950, the Republic of the South Moluccas was declared on the islands of Ambon and Saparoea and stamps were overprinted “Republik Malaku Salatan”. The leaders of this movement sent a representative, Mr. K. Nikijoeloew, to the United Nations, New York and opened “The Information Office of the South Moluccas Republic” at 310 East 44 th Street, New York City. In 1952, they also renamed the currency units from “sen” to “kopeng” and from “rupiah” to “remas”. We created these catalog numbers and prices to allow us to organize our stock and offer this material for sale. On February 15, 1958, the P.R.R.I.(Pemerintah Revolusioner RepublikIndonesia or Revolution Against theRule of Indonesia) was proclaimed.Dissidents in the military in NorthCelebes had these stamps printed inFormosa for use in areas under theircontrol.They are issued ungummed on thinpaper.

Forgeries (often referred to asreprints) abound and are identifiedby their uneven printing of details.On the originals, the north part ofBorneo is in a clear, neat lighter dotpattern, the numerals are clean andthe background is smooth, with evendot structure.Forgeries appear uneven, with thenorth Borneo area uneven orabsorbed into the whole island, thenumbers weakly defined and thebackground pale with a weak dotstructure.
