Tour Summary

Wasting no time in starting our Bali adventures, we departed a good deal before dawn on the first

morning. This, of course, had the added advantage of ensuring we'd miss the mad-rush that is daylight

Denpasar traffic! Our first planned stop, other than to buy coffee, of course, was Batukaru Temple,

located in the cooler climes at the base of Mount Batukar. There, in just a few short hours, we racked up

several good birds, as well as familiarised ourselves with some of the more common species on Bali.

Foremost among the former were two barbets – Flame-fronted and Yellow-eared – Javan Owlet,

Crescent-chested Babbler and Lesser Shortwing – all of which we saw, and most were seen very well.

Olive-backed Tailorbird, Cave Swiftlet, Sooty-headed Bulbul and Olive-backed Sunbird also put in

appearances.

That was all before lunch, which itself was enjoyed with more birds! At a little cafe overlooking some

productive little rice-paddies replete with waterhens, Javan Kingfishers, egrets, swallows and more, we

savoured the first of many delicious dishes on Bali. It was, however, soon time to tackle the narrow, busy

roads again, and we spent a few hours in the early afternoon making our way to Bali Barat, on the north-

western end of the island.

Needless to say, the journey wasn't at all boring, what with all the ongoings by the roadside, as well as

all the interesting architecture and other sights this jam-packed island has to offer. We also had a few

more birds to look forward to, as our late afternoon stops near our accommodation yielded sightings of

Scarlet-headed Flowerpecker, Green Junglefowl, the striking roseus subspecies of Coppersmith Barbet

and even a Javan Banded Pitta (from the bus!).

Two full days in the Bali Barat area were to follow, and things didn't slow down as a result at all. Well,

except in all the best ways – we did a lot less driving and our wonderful accommodations were in

decidedly much-less-crowded surroundings!

On our first morning there, we popped around the corner from our accommodation to catch up with

Black-winged Starling – now very much scarcer than Bali Myna – and picked up a Freckle-breasted

Woodpecker as a bonus. Enjoying our first of many wonderful sit-down breakfasts, we then made our

way out the park to some mangroves, where a Banded Bay Cuckoo, a Mangrove Whistler and two

Cerulean Kingfishers put in appearances. Shortly after, we found ourselves staring down the scope at a

gorgeous Oriental Dwarf Kingfisher in forest nearby; and then, as if that wasn't enough, we visited a

blind, where several great birds were admired at close-range, including Laced Woodpecker, Javan

Banded Pitta (several!), Horsfield's Babbler and Fulvous-chested Jungle Flycatcher! Not a bad morning!

After lunch on the beach (where we had our first Bar-winged Prinia sighting and a quick look at a roosting

Sunda Scops Owl), we departed our hotel in the late afternoon to visit some salt pans and coastal lagoons

where Sunda Teal, Javan Plover, Malaysian Plover and Savanna Nightjar were among the highlights

spotted – leaving us with nothing to do but enjoy another relaxed and top-end dinner!

For our second morning in the area, we once again popped out to the dry scrub near our accommodation,

where a Racket-tailed Treepie was picked up without much effort. After that, it was another leisurely

breakfast followed by a drive to Grojogan forest, where our main target – Ruby-throated Bulbul – also

gave up without much of a fight. We also managed to pick up a Plaintive Cuckoo during our efforts but,

wanting to avoid the heat of the day, we soon pushed off to another section of Bali Barat National Park,

where Javan Cuckooshrike became the third major target of the day to fall – flying straight into the first

recording we played!

Lunch followed, again on the beach, before a short break and then a visit to some forest edge and

farmland, where a couple of Yellow-throated Hanging Parrots were eventually found feeding in an

African Flame/Tulip tree! Returning to the 'cuckooshrike site', we gave it another go for Javan

Flameback, but this species is incredibly rare on Bali and we weren't too surprised that we failed – despite

the moments of thrill when a Common Flameback came in to recordings of the bird we wanted! In any

case, we had plenty of other stuff to look at, including several Lineated Barbet, more Javan Cuckooshrike,

Scarlet Minivets, Black-winged Flycatcher-Shrike and the only Hair-crested Drongo of the trip. A

handful of Orange-breasted Green Pigeon was our last sighting of the day.

On our final morning in the west, some of us started a little earlier than usual, seeing a very cooperative

Large-tailed Nightjar as a reward, before heading out as a full group to see Bali Myna up-close. Much

appreciated, this final excursion in the area was as enjoyable for the insight into this species' plight that

we were given as it was for the photo opportunities it provided! One final breakfast in the tower then

drew the curtains on our stay at the lovely Menjangan, before a few hours’ drive would take us back into

the highlands – this time around Bedugul.

Stopping first for fish and chips at a local restaurant, we checked into our hotel then headed straight into

the botanical gardens. Our first target there – Indonesian Honeyeater – put up no fight at all, followed by

several other good birds that were only marginally more difficult! Highlights among these were Banded

Fruit Dove, Dark-backed Imperial Pigeon, Lesser Cuckooshrike, Rusty-breasted Whistler, Grey-headed

Canary-Flycatcher, Sunda Warbler, Mountain Leaf Warbler, Mees's White-eye and Snowy-browed

Flycatcher. It took a little more effort to get our first views of Javan Whistling Thrush and Orange-headed

Trip Report – RBL Indonesia - Bali Birding Extension 2018 4

Rockjumper Birding Tours View more tours to Indonesia

Thrush, but then we didn't have to do much more than wait on the side of the road. Bonus sightings along

the way included our first Chestnut-backed Scimitar Babbler, another Lesser Shortwing and even a

Velvet-fronted Nuthatch – the latter being rather uncommon on Bali.

Bali Starling by Holger Teichmann

Heading back to the botanical gardens the following morning, we were hoping to settle the score with a

Sunda Thrush but our efforts were to no avail. Unfortunately, this species is also trapped, on a regular

basis, for the illegal caged-bird trade - evidence of which we saw without any effort. Anyway, back to

the good news. We did see several more Javan Whistling Thrushes, another Orange-headed Thrush and

several nice species we had only seen the previous day - all of which were appreciated the second time.

We also made a special effort to track down one last species found only in the highlands, and although it

took some time, it was well worth it! Javan Bush Warbler, until then, had not been sighted on one of our

tours, so it was with a little extra motivation that we set out to the hills above town. We heard several but

couldn't catch a glimpse at first, and just when it seemed we would have to follow in the footsteps of

others, we forced a change! Having drawn one individual very close to my speaker (lying in the

vegetation by the roadside), I decided to try 'walk' the bird out into the open - mostly prompted by the

sound of an oncoming motorbike. To say it worked would be an understatement, as we all managed to

get more than a couple of views of this tricky bird, out in the open understorey! Magic! And with that,

just one more major target remained - Java Sparrow. Thankfully, it took little more than a stroll to the

edge of some rice paddies, en route to Denpasar, where a family of three of these lovely little birds

obliged- a great way to finish the day and the tour.

The final morning of the tour was set aside as a departure day, so some of us began our homeward

journeys, while others joined me for the start of our Lesser Sundas adventures.
