FEATURED SPEAKERS & PRESENTATIONSTHE POWER OF ONE - ONE PERSON CAN CHANGE THE WORLD; THAT PERSON IS YOUJOHN O’LEARY

THE STRENGTH OF HOPEJILL SPROUL & KEVIN COOK

IT TAKES A TEAM JEFF SATURDAY

Journey alongside John O’Leary as he revisits the day he was burned on 100% of his body as a nine year old. On this dynamic walk, you will stand with him on the night he was told he’d die; the afternoon he first believed he wouldn’t; and other formative experiences after the fire. Along the way, John will share the critical lessons he learned with help from friends both old and new. You will gain tools to enhance your career, relationship, finances and health and well-being.

You will be moved from tears to laughter and given hope for tomorrow and confidence in today. The Power of One will inspire growth in all facets of life. You will leave knowing that one person can change the world; and that person can be you. Prepare to take back your life, ignite your possibility and change your world.

Most of us have experienced times in our life when we have gone from hopeful to hopeless. Sometimes finding hope can be difficult as we face tremendous challenges and loss.

Kevin Cook and Jill Sproul share their individual journeys and their journey together as burn survivors. Kevin was burned as an adult and Jill was injured as a child. Jill has gone on to become a nurse and has worked in burn care for the past 25 years as a bedside RN and now as the Burn Center Nurse Manager of the Santa Clara Valley Medical Center. They both are active in reintegration activities and with the Phoenix Society; Kevin as a photographer and Jill as a Phoenix Society Board of Directors member. By sharing how they journeyed from hopelessness to rich and full lives, they will endeavor to challenge the audience to look for hope and meaning in their daily lives and embrace the possibility of creating the future we all want and deserve.

Fourteen year professional football veteran and current ESPN commentator Jeff Saturday and his family have taken lessons from the football field and turned them toward a life of service in the burn community. While his football career included 13 seasons with the Indianapolis Colts, one with the Green Bay Packers, 6 Pro Bowls and a Super Bowl, life’s path also brought the burn injuries of his youngest son and the son of a close family friend. The Saturday family has learned firsthand the long recovery process of a burn injury and its impact on the child and the entire family. Today, they give back to the burn community through burn camp sponsorship and more.

Saturday links lessons from the football field to the burn survivor journey and burn support world. He’ll include teamwork as he discusses the elements of healing, including goal setting, communication and surviving together.

This message will reach listeners of all ages by acknowledging the impacts of injury and healing on everyone on a “team” (family, friends, and health care professionals) as well as how all can work together to make those milestones in the survivor journey happen.

KNOWING THE ESSENCE OF YOU CAROL JUERGENSEN SHEETS, LCSW, PCC, CSAT

This presentation is for anyone who needs a confidence boost as they navigate through the stresses of life. It is for staff, caregivers, and trauma survivors who are looking to increase their sense of self and feel inspired to live their best life!

This presentation helps participants to identify and claim their strengths and build the self confidence to get through the hard times and move through the trauma that naturally accompanies working with burn survivors or recovering from the trauma. Participants will learn how to use resiliency skills to shift a difficult situation into a life strengthening one.

Research shows that there are 3 primary factors to turning your life around from anger, sadness and grief to one of happiness and well being: staying in the moment, gratitude, and reframing.

Pre-Congress WorkshopsOctober 21, 2015 | 2:00–5:00pm

AN EXPERIENTIAL INTRODUCTION TO ENERGY MEDICINEAMELIA VOGLER, MS, HTCP/I

This is more than a lecture! In our time together, you will hear about the growing field of Energy Medicine and also get to experience and learn a few introductory energy-based methods. We will review applications of energy medicine and healing touch therapy in clinical and home settings; learn about the energy system and how to work with this system; and experience a few simple, effective, and supportive energy work methods that you can use immediately for yourself and family members.

Currently, more and more hospitals and clinics are including types of energy medicine in their integrative offerings. Persons who have access to energy-based complementary support report a reduction in symptoms, decreased pain, increased relaxation, more restful sleep; and an increase of spiritual connection. My goal is to empower you through education and experience so that you can begin to understand and use energy as a healing tool for yourself and those that you are close to.

When life becomes difficult it is natural to feel like a victim and this presentation reminds the participants that using life skills keeps them empowered. They will learn to redirect their life so they will cope better and feel stronger as they navigate their life. Participants will walk away feeling inspired and empowered to look at life with a positive spin!

AMPUTATION IN THE BURN SURVIVOR: Advancements in Technology and their Impact on Physical, Social and Psychological RecoveryDR. RAJIV SOOD

When a burn injury occurs, an amputation may also occur. This event can present its own unique challenges during the stages of recovery, acceptance and returning to an active life. During this session we will talk about the medical and surgical implications of treatment for the burn patient requiring amputation. We will explore the social and psychological impact of amputation in the burn survivor. And we will provide you with information on the current medical devices and advancements in technology for the burn amputee.

This workshop is presented by Dr. Rajiv Sood, a leading physician in the field of plastic surgery. Dr. Sood is the Medical Director of the Richard Fairbanks Burn Center and Riley Children’s Hospital Burn Center. He is also the Chief of the Division of Plastic Surgery at the Indiana

ADULTS BURNED AS CHILDREN, ADOLESCENTS, AND YOUNG ADULTSMEGAN BRONSON PMHCNS-BCSAMANTHA PRICE, MDHL, NCC, LPC

Trauma in childhood, adolescence, and young adulthood has psychological, emotional, physical, spiritual and social ramifications. Trauma also has an impact on  development. Each developmental stage has tasks and skills to be mastered as the child, adolescent and young adult move toward being able to manage life and become an independent, functioning adult. Burn trauma can pull the young survivor off course and delay mastering these developmental milestones.

This workshop focuses on identifying the impact of burn trauma across the developmental continuum and on overcoming trauma symptoms. Developing skills and ways to overcome developmental delay and get your life moving forward and back on track will also be addressed. This workshop is appropriate for burn survivors who were injured in childhood, adolescence, or young adulthood. It is also appropriate for their families, significant others, and caregivers who support the burn survivor and who have also been impacted by the trauma.

FACING THE FUTURE... STEPS TO SOCIAL CONFIDENCE AND CONTROLBARBARA KAMMERER QUAYLE, MONA KREUGER, TONY GONZALES

This power-packed workshop provides the “tools” for survivors and families to get back to living after a burn injury. It enables YOU to successfully feel comfortable and confident in any social, work, or school setting. You will learn common sense, specific, and smart ways to confidently manage stares, startled glances, abrupt questions, and whispers from three burn survivors who use these tools in their daily lives. This workshop is designed for survivors, family, friends, and burn care professionals. Everyone leaves with crucial, easy-to-use tools to build REAL social control, social comfort, and social competence!

Young adults ages 18-25 are invited to a fun and deep way to experience Phoenix World Burn Congress. With this year’s Indy-inspired theme we will find power in facing our self-limiting beliefs and steering life in the directions we want to go.

Two workshop tracks for Wednesday will offer focused content for different stages of recovery that include either an opportunity for deepened self-awareness or outreach/service to others. Young adult support groups, opportunities for some participants to work with and support other conference attendees (youth or adults), and actually being in the driver’s seat at The Dallara IndyCar Factory will be highlights of our workshop time! Year after year, attendees tell us that the workshop is only the beginning. The best part is making new friends and taking on a big city with them and with a new-found confidence. Pre-registration required. Space is limited.

Commitment includes ALL parts of the program, including on-time arrival Wednesday morning:

• Wednesday, October 21, 2015 - 9:30am-5:00pm workshop (includes outing to Dallara Indycar Factory with race experience)

ADVOCACY TRAINING FRIDAY, OCTOBER 23, 2015 | 10:15AM–12:00PMAdvocacy is the act of pleading for, supporting, or recommending something. Every burn survivor reflects a unique story of pain, healing, and lifelong journey of recovery. Loved ones of burn survivors, healthcare professionals and fire service carry a unique story as well. At the Phoenix Society, we believe that no survivor, family member, firefighter or healthcare professional should have to carry that story alone. Join us for the Phoenix Society Advocacy Training and gain the tools needed to present your story with purpose and effectiveness to the media, the public and lawmakers as a Phoenix Advocate. We believe by bringing together our individual stories and raising our voices as a burn community, we can increase understanding of burn issues, improve burn prevention efforts, reach more burn survivors and address other issues important to the burn community.

WALK OF REMEMBRANCEWEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 21 | 6:00PM The conference begins with a “Walk of Remembrance” from the Indianapolis Marriott Downtown to the Indiana State Capitol to honor those who have died from their burn injuries and to offer a time to remember our own losses related to burn injuries. It is important to remember our losses so we can reconnect with life and continue to heal-which is the goal for the next few days.

Firefighters and Volunteers will be escorting attendees along the walk route on this symbolic opening of the 27th Annual Phoenix World Burn Congress. The Walk of Remembrance will also serve to remind the general public that burn care and prevention are critical.

We will leave the hotel staging area at 6:00pm. After the remembrance walk we will return to the Indianapolis Marriott Downtown for the kick-off reception starting at 7:30pm. Casual dress and comfortable shoes encouraged.

2015 Phoenix World Burn Congress

— 13 — 2015 WBC Registration Brochure

Phoenix Society provides a supportive community empowering everyone affected by a burn injury to live the fullest life possible. Since 1977, we have championed the needs of burn survivors and their families as the only national organization providing the support and resources needed to thrive again.

While we offer many programs and resources, Phoenix World Burn Congress is our largest program. It brings together nearly 1,000 burn survivors, their families, medical professionals, and fire service for educational programming, training, support groups and resources each year. We look forward to having you join us in Indianapolis!

Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health is honored to be a lead sponsor of the 2015 Phoenix World Burn Congress. As Indiana’s only verified pediatric burn center, our expert team of clinicians and care providers treat the state’s most complex burns and serve as a resource for burn prevention, research and advocacy. We encourage and support the Phoenix World Burn Congress contributions to bringing burn survivors and family members from around the world together to share experiences, provide support to others and learn from their burn recovery. Riley at IU Health welcomes you to Indianapolis!

This life-changing program would not be possible without financialsupportfromoursponsors.

Thank You Sponsors!
