ACTIVITY – 1
‘International Yoga Day Celebration’ held at Kongunadu Arts
and Science College, Coimbatore on 21.06.2016
The convener of the chapter and the Secretary of Kongunadu Arts and
Science College, Smt. C.A. Vasuki inaugurated the function. She emphasized
the importance of Yoga for our healthy life both at mental and physical levels.
The physical director of the college Dr. P.K. Kavithashri demonstrated the yoga
practices. Two hundred and eleven students and local public have taken part in
this programme.

ACTIVITY – 2
‘Free Medical Camp for Tribal People’ held at Chadivayal tribal
hamlets, Coimbatore district on 31.07.2016
Indian Science Congress Association (ISCA), Coimbatore Chapter,
Kongunadu Arts and Science College (KASC) premises and Kovai Medical
Center and Hospital (KMCH), Coimbatore jointly organized a free medical
camp for tribal people on 31.07.2016 at Chadivayal tribal hamlets. Smt. C.A.
Vasuki, Convener, Coimbatore Chapter, ISCA and Secretary, KASC,
Coimbatore emphasized the need of taking care about our health and explained
the usage of medicinal plants for our day to day life. Mr. C. Dineshkumar,
Range Officer, Tamil Nadu Forest Department, Boluvampatti Range declared
open the camp. Dr. Aravindan, Dr. Alagappan and Dr. Priya of KMCH along
with their team made tests for diagnosis of diabetics, skin problems, HIV,
cancer etc. One hundred and seventy two persons of tribal community have
been tested for their ailments and got benefit. Twenty student volunteers of
Ecoclub, KASC, Coimbatore assisted the doctors in the camp.

Paper and poster presentations were held in eight halls within the campus.
The topics selected by the presenters were of scholarly nature and were
appreciated by the chairpersons.

The Symposium created awareness about:
The need to increase green cover and preserve biodiversity.
Measures for sustainable development.
Bio-remediation in waste management.
How to avoid man-animal conflict by creating awareness and through the
use of communication devices.
How to identify poisonous snakes and avoid snake bites.
What measures to take and what to avoid regarding snake-bite.
Ecoliteracy to be imparted through literature.
Appreciation of nature through reading.
Avoidance of pollution and conservation.
How nature and ecology are dealt with in literature and literary criticism.
The above-mentioned topics were dealt with by experts in the field with
hands-on experience. The research papers also helped in increasing knowledge
about various aspects of ecology including cutting-edge technology in the area.
They greatly encouraged the researchers and motivated all the participants to
adopt eco-friendly practices in their daily lives.

Special lecture on
Managing Anaemia & Malnutrition through Home Remedies
Indian Science Congress Association, Coimbatore Chapter and
Department of Botany, Kongunadu Arts and Science College, Coimbatore
organized a special lecture on ‘Managing Anaemia & Malnutrition through
Home Remedies’ on 21.12.2016 in College campus. Smt. Hemamalini,
National Joint Coordinator / Home Remedies Project Director, Arogya
Foundation of India, Coimbatore has delivered a lecture on “Managing
Anaemia & Malnutrition through Home Remedies”. She explained the
various reasons for anaemia for women and possible home remedies to cure
anaemia. She also described the traditional life style practices used to control
the anaemia particularly for ladies. She suggested different fruits (e.g. graphs,
pomegranate, papaya, apple etc), vegetables (carrot, beetroot, drumstick,
pumkin etc) and seeds (sesame, barley, ragi, green gram, fenugreek etc) used to
treat anemic disorders. Our students gained awareness about anaemia from this
lecture. Over 360 female students, research scholars and staff members of
various department have participated in this programme and get benefit.

ACTIVITY – 7
Minutes of the Meeting held on 12.01.2017 at the Coimbatore
chapter, Indian Science Congress Association
Accepting the invitation extended by the convenor of the Coimbatore Chapter, Prof.
R. Ramamurthy, Former General President, Indian Science Congress Association visited
Coimbatore Chapter, Kongunadu Arts and Science College premises on 12.01.2017. A
meeting was convened to discuss about the ways and means to promote the activities of this
chapter. Prof. R. Ramamurthy narrated the history of launching various chapters of Indian
Science Congress Association across the country. He insisted on the need of celebrating the
food day on 16th October and Childrens’ day on 14th November every year. He suggested to
celebrate the Science Day, this year on 28th February with differently abled people with the
programmes to be arranged. He suggested that Quiz programme, essay writing competition
etc. may be conducted much earlier to mark Science Day Celebration so that the prizes/
awards may be distributed on February, 28th, the day of celebration. He said that programmes
should be arranged in such a way that the research output reach the common people under the
themes like ‘Science and Society’ or ‘Science for Society’ etc.
The visiting professor explained the need of documentation of the culture,
bioresources and physical resources available and the economic and education status of tribal
communities in various landscapes through the chapters. He informed about the availability
of funds in Indian Science Congress Association for conducting two day or three day
seminars/ conferences/ workshops/symposium etc. by the chapters. He advised the faculty
members present to utilize the available funds for the above such activities of the chapter.
Further he suggested to create an exclusive website for the chapter to share the activities and
the outputs. Finally he advised to prepare a booklet containing the details of the chapter
members, so that the activities of the chapter can be shared with the members of the host and
other chapters and with that a meeting came to end.

Drawing Competition on the Theme ‘Drought Management’
14.02.2017
Indian Science Congress Association (ISCA), Coimbatore Chapter and Eco-
club of Kongunadu Arts and Science College jointly organized ‘Drawing competition’
on the focal theme ‘Drought Management’ for both UG and PG students. The event
was held on 14.02.2017 in the Department of Botany, Kongunadu Arts and Science

The National Science Day was celebrated by the PG and Research Department of
Physics, Kongunadu Arts and Science College in association with Indian Science Congress
Association, Coimbatore Chapter for three days on 28th Feb to 2nd March, 2017. On 28th Feb,
a National level seminar was organized followed by Science Exhibition for two days the 1st &

NATIONAL SCIENCE DAY CELEBRATIONS
SCIENCE EXHIBITION
A science exhibition was arranged on 01.03.2017 and 02.03.2017 with the exhibits
related with modern medicine. It was inaugurated by Dr. C.A. Vasuki, Coimbatore chapter
convener on 01.03.2017 in Kongunadu Arts and Science College. Models were exhibited by
various institutions and research centers including the host institution which gained
remarkable attention from visitors.
Robots specialties and their functions were clearly demonstrated by the participants
from the Department of Robotic and Automation, PSG Institute of Technology. Four
Telescopes having different resolving power and magnification were exhibited and explained
by the Astronomy Club, Coimbatore. Department of Meteorology from Bharathiar University
demonstrated the function of weather forecasting station. Different models from Regional
Science Center were used to explain the simple physics concepts. Exhibits on importance of
livestock, organic farming and health issues of live stocks were clearly displayed by
Department of Animal Husbandry, Coimbatore. Ganga Hospital, Coimbatore created an
awareness by explaining the need of skin donation that received more attention among young
generation.
Inter-Collegiate Competitions
Various competitions were conducted by the host department, Physics for the
participants of other institutions on 01.03.2017 to motivate the young minds. Two hundred
and seventy two participants from the institutions viz., PSG College of Arts and Science,
Avinasilingam Deemed University, Sri Ramakrishna Mission Vidhyalaya, Sri GVG
Visalakshi College for Women, PSGR Krishnammal College for Women, Kongu Arts
College, Gobi Arts College and Karunya University took part in the competitions viz.,
potpourri, oral presentation, science fiction writing, digital photography and debate.
Inter-Departmental Competitions
Various competitions were conducted by the Physics Department to the participants
of the host institution on 02.03.2017. Nearly 200 participants were actively participated in
competitions like quiz, oral presentation, science fiction writing, digital photography and
poster making.

National Seminar on ‘Opportunities and Challenges in Biological
Sciences’
National Seminar on “Opportunities and Challenges in Biological Sciences” was
organized on 09th March 2017 by the PG and Research and Department of Zoology,
Kongunadu Arts and Science College (KASC) in the college premises with the support of
Indian Science Congress Association, Coimbatore Chapter. One hundred and eighty
participants of UG and PG students and M.Phil. and Ph.D. scholars of various departments
were participated.

National Level Seminar on “Advanced Developments in
Spectroscopic Techniques and its Applications” - (STA-2017)
The Department of Chemistry (UG) organized, the Indian Science Congress
Association Coimbatore Chapter sponsored National Level Seminar on “Advanced
Development in Spectroscopic Techniques and its Applications” on 20.03.2017 to motivate
the students to acquire knowledge in spectroscopic techniques and its importance to do higher
studies and research in Chemistry and biological sciences. Two hundred students and 45 staff
members from Chemistry Department and other Departments of Kongunadu Arts and
Science College have participated and benefitted.

World Water Day Celebration
World water day was celebrated by organizing events jointly by PG and Research
Department of Biotechnology and Indian Science Congress Association, Coimbatore
Chapter, on the 22nd of March 2017, in Kongunadu Arts and Science College (KASC),
Coimbatore.
Highlights of the event
Competitons
Different competitions viz., Essay writing in English and Tamil, Quiz and Drawing
were conducted on water conservation and management. The prize winners were honored on
the stage during the event.
Special talks
Special address was delivered by Dr. C.A Vasuki, Secretary, KASC, who spoke about
our responsibility towards our waterbodies. She also explained about the efficient rainwater-
harvesting units available in Kongunadu Arts and Science College.
Cultural programs
Various cultural programs like mime, drama and dance were conducted on the theme
‘Water Scarcity and Conservation’. A special song was written, composed and played in a
video mode, exclusively for the program on the theme ‘Importance of Water’.
Science models
Many science models representing the ways of water conservation were displayed.
Eight hundred and five persons visited the exhibition.
