Senate 17.26.01 Introductory remarks by the Chairman

The Chairman welcomed the members specially Professor M. K.

Surappa who came all the way from Bangalore sparing his

valuable time. The Chairman informed the Senate with

profound grief that Mr. Mayank Kumar, BS-MS-14 batch

student has died on 26.7.2017. He was a good student and

gentle in his behaviour. The Institute lost a very good student.

The Academic Senate observed 2 minutes silence in honour of

the departed soul.

The Chairman informed the Senate that Ms. Swetha, a former

student of IISER Mohali, now doing Ph.D. in MIT, has been

bestowed with the best teaching assistant award. Ms. Vaishnavi

Sridhar, an MS graduate in 2017 has been selected as one of the

five SERB scholars to pursue Ph.D. in University

British Columbia, Canada. The Academic Senate congratulated

them.

The Academic Senate appreciated the services rendered by

Professor I.B.S. Passi and Professor Somdatta Sinha as Senators

over the years and wanted to place it on record. The Academic

Senate desired that the appreciation be conveyed to them.

Further, The Chairman informed the Academic Senate that Dr.

Kavita Dorai, Associate Professor has co-authored a book on

“cross relaxation and cross-correlation parameters in NMR”

and Professor J. S. Bagla edited a book along with Sunee

Engineer on "Gravity and the Quantum". The Academic

Senate congratulated both the faculty members.

Senate 17.26.02 Confirmation of the Draft Minutes of the 25th Meeting of the

Academic Senate held on May 16, 2017.

Draft Minutes of the 25th Meeting of the Academic Senate held on May 16,

2017 were circulated to all the members and requested the members to convey

the observations/comments, if any. Some observations have been received from

Professor Sanjay Mandal placed at page no. 10-13 of the agenda. After

The Academic Senate examined his request and the possibility

of his improvement. Finally it was decided that he could be

given a chance to clear his backlogs so that he can meet the

requirements for the BS degree. It would be impossible for him

to fulfill the requirements for the BS-MS degree, with the

academic record he has so far. Thus the Senate approved for his

re-instatement with the condition that Mr. Barun Khaidem will

clear his backlogs for receiving the BS Degree.

The Academic Senate agreed for the re-instatement of Rabi

a. Appeal received from Ms. Sreshta Elchuri on medical grounds is placed at

page no. 84-86 of the agenda.

Request of Ms. Sreshta Elchuri has not been acceded to as there

is no fresh material. Her earlier request was the same which

was not acceded to by the Academic Senate on 16.05.2017.

Senate 17.26.09 Proposal for developing of an EES Major Program as part of the BS-

MS course curriculum offered by IISER Mohali.

Professor Sampat Tandon was invited for spending a month at IISER

Mohali as a visiting Professor for developing the proposal to make EES

as a major Program as a part of the BS-MS course curriculum offered by

the IISER Mohali. Professor Sampat submitted the proposal for making

EES as a major program for BS-MS course placed at page no. 91-123 of

the agenda.

Since the required material was not available to the senators in

advance, they were requested to look into the material/proposal

placed as an agenda, page no. 91-123 and send their opinion

/report/review to the Chairman, Academic Senate. The same

will be conveyed to the Curriculum Review Committee.

Senate 17.26.10 Candidates from IISER Mohali, applied for Direct Admission into

the Ph.D. Programme.

In the 25th Meeting of the Academic Senate vide agenda item no. Senate

17.25.05 permitted 16 nos. of General/OBC candidates and 5 nos. of

SC/ST candidates i.e. total 21 candidates have been permitted to admit

into the Ph.D. program. In addition to that now Ms. Mugdha Thakur,

MS12048 has also applied for direct admission into Ph.D. program under

general category. Her CPI is 8.1. Request is placed at page no. 124 of

the agenda.

Mr. Mohamed Musthafa Iqbal, MS12061 has also applied for direct

admission into Ph.D. program under OBC category. His CPI is 8.0.
