No other source of energy combines Hydro Power's affordability, contributions to combating climate change, and job creation. Far from an old and conventional source of energy, clean and renewable Hydro Power is constantly evolving and searching for new methods to squeeze energy out of the dams. Opportunities are galore. With proposed regulatory reforms reclassifying Hydro Power energy as Renewable Energy on the anvil, the over 200 stalled Hydro Power projects will get a kick-start. At the same time, numerous coal-red power plants will be retired in a phased manner due to environmental regulations and global market forces. This energy will need to be replaced with clean, green, sustainable and affordable power. Every effort should be made to ensure Hydro Power lives up to its tremendous potential and delivers environment- friendly electricity to homes and businesses from coast to coast. The culturally and ecologically diverse region of North East Region is the focus of ambitious Hydro Power development plans. Policy discourses at the national level positions this development as benecially positive: it combines the production of clean energy to fuel economic growth at regional and national levels with initiatives to lift mountain communities out of poverty to prosperity. Different from Hydro Power development in the 20th century in which development agencies and banks were important players, new initiatives importantly rely on the involvement of private actors, with a prominent role of the private nance sector. This implies that Hydro Power development is not only nancially viable but also understood as highly protable. Preparations for the “9th National Convention: Hydro Power India 2017’, to be held on 24-25 January 2017 at Hotel Taj Vivanta, Guwahati, is in full swing.
