History[edit]

Page 4: India

Raj Comics was started in 1986 by Rajkumar Gupta. Raj Comics were earlier started as Raja

Pocket Books which was earlier known as Harish Pocket Books, which published successful

detective children novels (known as Bal Pocket Books) Rajan Iqbal by author S. C. Bedi.[1]

The company focuses on superhero-centric comic books. The majority of their output is in

the Hindi language, but a few titles and 'special editions' have been translated into English. It has

produced close to 35,000 comics to date. Raj Comics has become a legend over the years.

Around the start of 90s, Raj Comics were so popular, because of its characters such as Dhruv,

Doga, and Nagraj, that children and young teenagers started to rent hundreds of comics to other

readers who were unable to buy the comics, even though the comics were economically priced

and several discounts were provided to regular and guide-readers. Renting and lending of

comics, as well as exchanging stickers based on these heroes, became so popular that not just

kids, but their parents as well, started to consider comics a good habit of reading. Sometimes

comics did become hazardous for students at school who were reading them instead of paying

attention to classes. Disciplinary action was taken against students who were found reading

comics in class, so this is a testament to the almost religious status of Raj comics among the

Indian youth. Raja Pocket Books started publishing Raj Comics and King Comics(Raj

comics)simultaneously. King comics only lasted for around 2 years. After that, some heroes of

King Comics, like Gamraj, were merged into Raj Comics. A recently released issue, based on

common wealth games, also featured a King Comics character known as Allrounder Vakra

In other media[edit]

In 2008, The Sarai Programme at CSDS published a book[2] as a part of Sarai Media Lab's

"Research Project on Raj Comics and graphic novel culture in Delhi". That publication, available,

for free, as a PDF from the Sarai website, has the following introductory text:

"Around the late 1980s when Indrajaal Comics was beginning to close shop and Amar Chitra

Katha was printing re-runs, three brothers decided to open their own comic book publication

house. In their quest for the Indian super hero, Raj Comics was born.

After 25 years of producing an entire universe of superheroes, Raj Comics is the largest comic

book publishing house in India. They have published more than 5000 titles and are home to

more than 20 characters."

Recently, Raj Comics has started using modern methods to promoting their comics, such as

teaming up with major service providers like Vodafone and Airtel. Raj Comics has started 3D

comics and will soon produce motion comics. Raj Comics` major projects include movie based

on their superhero Doga. It is expected that Raj Comics` fan base will tremendously increase

once the movie is released.

Plot[edit]

The movie starts with Akshay Kumar singing the song "Everything's Gonna Be All Right" for the children in the school. He then begins talking to one child who seems to be depressed. He then narrates the story of Jumbo to this child.

Jumbo is a small blue elephant (voiced by Akshay Kumar) who grows up with his mother (voiced by Dimple Kapadia). His mother never reveals any details of his father and neither do the rest of the elephants in the herd. He is a happy go lucky elephant, who loves to play with the other animals of the jungle. Occasionally he would be confronted by the other elephants of the herd, who would bully him on the history of his father. Tired of being teased about his father's cowardice in some war, he confronts his mom again who somehow manages to rubbish the topic. One night he comes to know that a large army has come to the jungle, and they plan an overnight stay. In the hope of finding his father, Jumbo sets out to the camp, and manages to locate a tent that houses the royal elephant of that army. He goes in and politely asks the royal elephant about his father. All of a sudden the royal elephant turns very violent and Jumbo starts running for cover. In the meanwhile the soldiers standing outside see Jumbo running out of the tent and try to capture it. Jumbo manages to go in to the tent of prince Vikramaditya. Vikramaditya then saves Jumbo from the soldiers. It is then revealed that Vikramaditya is the prince of a captured kingdom and is a POW. After running away from the camp Jumbo realizes that he is separated from his mother and is lost in the jungle. He wanders in the jungle for a while where he meets Sonia (voiced by Lara Dutta) a cute pink elephant. He meets some villagers and a wise old Mahout who is the guardian of Sonia. They teach him the art of war and also make him strong and confident. He grows up to be a well built and strong war elephant.

Prince Vikramaditya then calls for his whole kingdom to unite and fight against the oppressive rule of the enemy. Jumbo and his Mahout then go for a competition called by Vikramaditya, for the selection of the royal elephant. Jumbo finds his mother at Vikramaditya's court and she finally tells him the story of his father who was a war elephant and never returned after a war. They sneak into a tent which houses the ex-royal elephants, hoping to locate Jumbo's father. There they meet an old royal elephant who knows Jumbo's father. He then narrates what happened in the battle. He tells them that Jumbo's father was killed by Bakhtavar, the enemy's royal elephant, after a fierce battle.

Jumbo then set out with king Vikramaditya to avenge the death of his father. Jumbo shows the same strength and skill which his father possessed in his days. They challenge Bakhtavar for a one-on-one combat. Then follows a fierce battle between Jumbo and Bakhtavar, in which Jumbo kills Bakhtavar in the same manner that his father was killed. In the end Akshay Kumar, who is narrating the story to a small kid, again emphasises his words "everything's gonna be all right, chalteh hai side by side".
