Dear Parents and Carers,
It has been great to have our students back at school this week. At the time this article was written we have 96%
attendance which is a great relief to all staff.
With the school starting to return to normal, we are in a position where
we can now implement some exciting weekly events. Starting from
Monday, I have invited our Student Councillors to host weekly
announcements over the school PA system. This will enable us to deliver
key reminders as well as acknowledge our students’ achievements
across the school. I have reinstated the students receiving Honour
Certificates and whilst this will look a little different when compared to
assemblies, we will do our utmost to make it special for our recipients.
The Student Councillors will read out the certificates and recipients will
come to the Admin Block to receive them from Mrs Toms and myself. We
will take a group photo and publish in our School Newsletter. The
teachers will allocate up to two Honour Certificates from each class and
parents will be notified on the day that their child will be receiving one.
In order to commence these Monday announcements, I met with the Student Councillors to seek their input. I would
like to acknowledge what an enthusiastic, well-mannered and talented group of student leaders we have in the
school.
As the colder weather sets in I would like to remind parents and carers of two things. Firstly, as per the school ’s
Dress Code students are required to wear school uniform and I have noticed a number of students arriving at school
without a school jumper. I understand that students may wear an extra jumper or jacket in transit to school however
students must wear school uniform once they are at school. There are also a number of students who arrive late to
school which is very disruptive for teachers as they commence lessons. Arriving late also places students under
pressure so they are less likely to settle well into the school day and they miss crucial socialisation with their peers in
before school chats. I thank you in advance for supporting the school in this regard.
While the majority of students were away at the end of last term we made some significant upgrades to the
undercover area. The undercover area now boasts an incredible mural created by Perth artist Paul Deej. It is an
outstanding art work and adds great value to the aesthetics of the school. We have also upgraded the sound system
and now have wireless microphones and an improved amplifier which will make school assemblies even better once
they resume. There are still a few improvements to this area coming in the next few weeks, so I will keep the
surprises coming and update you as the improvements continue.
Finally, a huge thank you to everyone who supported the P&C’s on-line auction. You helped to raise $565 to support
the students at our school.
Have a great fortnight!

Dear Parents & Carers of Choir Members
The OBV committee have reluctantly accepted and notified us in the past week that our festival will not be permitted to go ahead in 2020. Our 21st birthday celebration will now be in 2021. One Big Voice will be 21 in 21! One Big Voice will continue to offer the complete programme to support all of their registered schools. In addition, we will have access to far more resources than usual so we will still be learning the repertoire as well as new songs, have access to virtual choirs, online music, work packages, choreography, etc. I anticipate we will still be able to perform these songs at a school level and hopefully publicly in some format as the year progresses. In the meantime, ensure your children keep updated regularly with the OBV website. On the student tab there are some fabulous competitions including raps and artwork that they can do. Yours musically Mrs Whitely

Library Happenings
It’s been fantastic to see all the students back this week and coming into the library and borrowing books. A number of processes have been put in place to keep everyone safe, including cleaning of books and frequent cleaning of high touch areas by our cleaning staff.
We are participating in the WAYRBA (West Australian Young Readers Book Awards) voting for the first time this year. A selection of nominated books are in our library of which young people are asked to read the titles and evaluate them as “terrific” “good” “okay” or “not for me”. Every student that hands me a voting slip will also receive a bookmark. Voting was due to close in September, but has been extended due to COVID. I hope our students enjoy reading the selection of books and look forward to finding out the winner, knowing they helped select the winning book.
Next Wednesday 27th is National Simultaneous Storytime. This annual event was created to promote the value of
reading and literacy, for learning and for fun. Each year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator is read simultaneously around the country. In previous years multiple classes have gathered in the library for a reading. This year the book will be read over our PA system. This years book is Whitney and Britney Chicken Divas by Lucinda Gifford and will be available in the library for borrowing after the event.
