Voiceover:
In some timem make the time, to drive out west,
into County Claire along the flaggy shore n
September or October, when the wind and the
light are working off each other, so that the ocean
1:02:06
on one side is wild with foam and glitter, and
inland amongst stones, the surface of a slate gray
lake is lit with the earth lightning of a flock of
swans, their feathers roughed and roughling and
white on white, their fully grown headstrong
looking heads tucked or cresting or busy under
water, useless to think you’ll park and capture it
more thoroughly, you’re neither here nor there, a
hurry through which known and strange things
pass, as big soft buffetings come at the car
sideways and catch the heart off-guard, and blow
itopen.
01:01:04:21
Aung San Suu Kyi arrival; Aung sun su Kyi
Voiceover: After some time, one starts to feel that
one doesn’t belong to the rest of the world,
because you live apart from it on your own.

Aung San Suu Kyi Voiceover/Interview

I was really moved I had never understood how
much people cared. I knew they cared but not to
such an extent.

Damien Rice: Seven years ago we wrote this
song for Aung San Suu Kyi’s Birthday, it was her
60th Birthday, and uh right now, in Burma, the
clock is just ticking midnight of the 19th of June,
which is Aung San Suu Kyi’s Birthday, so, Happy
Birthday.
01:03:15:20
Aung San Suu Kyi Voiceover/Interview: The pace
of my life is extremely hectic. Sometimes I do feel
a little bit nostalgic for those days when I could

0:20:14
read and uh write in peace, and you know just
relax and meditate and take my time and over the
small tasks of the day, I have to say I feel slightly
nostalgic, this just very slightly.
01:03:37:03
Damien Rice performing Unplayed Piano
01:07:06:19
Bob Geldof: Very soon, finally, Aung San Suu
gets to speak to you, I understand that after a day
spnt with Bono, the first thing on your mind is to
get this over with, get on a place and get back to
Burma. And beg the military gentry to put you
back into house arrest. After a day of surmoning
and speeches it must be, I don’t know,
bewildering and bemusing and simultaneously
gratifying, and as you’ve been reminding us, now
the important stuff is the prosaic, dull grind of
normal politics, but how you must have longed for
that day. Ireland can’t really give you any more
than it has today, with its civic and diplomatic and
03:29:17
01:17:22
now artistic honors we have nothing left to give
you, but the reality is that you actually honor us,
by being finally here with us and all of the people
who have worked for this moment.
01:08:27:14
Aung San Suu Kyi Interview: I think the people in
Burma are realistic, when I was campainging for
the bi-elections in April, I made it quite clear to
them that things were not going to change
overnight and I also said that neither my party nor
I could achieve all the things that they wanted,
they would have to join in, they also had to join
the duty to work for the kind of country that they
want, and I made a point to say that I would make
no promised beyond to try my best.
01:08:55:21
Angelique Kidjo performs Blewu.
01:09:30:08
Bill Shipsey Interview: There had been a freedom

struggle in Burma and on one day in 1988 almost
3000 protestors were murdered in the streets.
01:09:38:04
Angelique Kidjo performs Redemption Song. Bill
Shipsey voiceover: And shortly after that the
National League for Democracy was founded,
Aung San Suu Kyi became its first General
Secretary and she was placed under house arrest
and from that time she was adopted by Amnesty
International as a Prisoner of Conscience.
01:09:54:23
Redemption Song continues.
01:10:36:24
Bill Shipsey voiceover continues: And I have
been involved, I suppose, since 1989 in writing on
her behalf to support her and seek her release.
And I suppose I didn’t think they would release
her when they did in November of 2010, so it
came as something of a surprise, but you were
0:16:12
0:42:02
02:02:12
always hoping and working for that day.
01:12:39:10
Aung San Suu Kyi Voiceover/Interview: What I
find exciting is putting new heart into people, it’s
not the projects themselves, in themselves, but
what they do to the people, how it empowers the
people that they can be in charge of such
projects, that excites me.
01:12:57:02
Wu’er Kaixi: Good evening, my name is Wu’er
Kaixi, I am one of the leaders of the T__ Student
Movement, which took place in 1989, many of my
fellow students were killed, and others like me
were forced into exile. Tonight we are celebrating
D__ Suu Kyi’s freedom, although this freedom is
compromised. This freedom is temporary. Not
until the day all Burmese can celebrate their
freedom like we do here, intoxicated with true
beauty of literature, sing from the top of our lung,
dance like we can burn the night, not until all
0:17:18
01:35:19
Burmese, Chinese, all people deprived from their
freedom, can celebrate that on their own soil, we
are celebrating the freedom of the few. But let the
regime of Burma know, let the regime of China
know, and let all those oppressor of freedom to
know this: there will always be us, who are willing
to pay that price. Let’s truly celebrate that.
01:14:15:03
Bob Geldof performs Peace, Love and
Understanding.
01:16:34:00
Saoirse Ronan, performing with Sarah Nemantu
and Romain Descharmes: And then, there was
Saint Kevin and the blackbird, the saint is
kneeling, arms stretched out inside his cell. But
the cell is narrow, so one turned up hand is out
the window, stiff as a cross beam, when a
blackbird lands, lays in it and settles down to
nest. To labor, and not to seek reward, he prays:
a prayer his body makes entirely, for he has
02:18:23
0:51:04
forgotten self, forgotten bird, and on the
riverbank, forgotten the river’s name.
01:17:25:03
Jack Gleeson recites The Haw Lantern: The
wintry haw is burning out of season, crowd of the
thorn, a small light, for small people, wanting no
more for them but that they keep the wick of self-
respect from dying out. Not to blind them from
illumination.
01:17:52:05
Lupe Fiasco performs Words I Never Said.
01:22:18:06
Salil Shetty speaks: of what I’ve heard is a really
safe assumption that none of you have come to
listen to my speech I haven’t really prepared one.
We are all hear to listen to D__ Suu, we are all
here to celebrate her freedom, and the freedom
of the Burmese people, we are also here to
remmeber that we still have hundreds of
01:16:11
4:26:02
01:37:05
prisoners, still, in Burmese prisons. But most
importantly, as far as Amnesty International is
concerned, it’s also a moment for us to thank the
millions of people across the world who have
campaigned over decades for the release of D_
San Suu Kyi and for the release of so many other
political prisoners across the world. So I wanted
to just try to see if we can do a west African for
clapping for D Suu Kyi and for the people of
Ireland and for the activists and campaigners
across the world. You have to warm your hands
up for this: is it getting hotter? But tell me when
it’s completely hot and then we go like this, 1, 2,
1, 2, 3 (clapping). Unfortunately, our activists and
campaigners from Africa, Asia, Latin America
have not been able to travel to Dublin for this
event, so we have to do it in a way that we can
hear you, so, let’s try it again. Let’s warm it up.
Tell me when it’s really hot, is it getting hot?
Really hot? OK let’s go, 1, 2.. (clapping).
01:23:55:100:35:09
Aung San Suu Kyi voiceover/interview: I am told
that members of the Amnesty International sent
me 100’s of postcards, I never received a single
one. But the knowledge that they sent it meant a
great deal to me, because even though none of
those postcards ever reached me, the, it must
have, the authorities must have been aware of
them because somebody must have gotten rid of
them, those postcards, and so whoever got rid of
those postcards must have been aware of the
concern of the outside world for the prisoners of
conscience inside Burma.
01:24:32:13
Salil Shetty continues: The one thing we’ve
learned is that the armies and dictators may have
guns, bullets, tanks, but they will never be abe to
kill the human spirit.
01:24:47:05
Aung San Suu Kyi voiceover/interview: I think it’s
important that dictatorial governments know that
0:13:03
0:12:00
the outside world cares about the people they are
oppressing, then they are a little more careful
about what they do.
01:24:57:14
Electric Burma Band performs Toast Of Freedom.
01:28:04:01
Vanessa Redgrave recites From The Republic of
Conscience: When I landed in the Republic of
Conscience, it was so noiseless when the
engines stopped I could hear a c__ high over the
runway. I came back from that frugal republic, my
two arms the one length, the customs woman
having insisted my allowance was myself, the old
man rose and gazed in my face and said that was
official recognition that I was now a dual citizen.
He therefore desired me when I got home to
consider myself a representative and to speak on
their behalf in my own tongue. Their embassies,
he said, were everywhere but operated
independently, and no ambassador would ever
03:06:13
01:25:03
be relieved.
01:29:29:03
Kate Tempest performs We Persevere,
perservere, until it is ours we have strength in our
hearts and a resolution that lasts despite turmoil,
we perservere while time leaves its footprints
behind on our faces but we remain fearless and
trust in our faith and we love, love is ours, a love
that roars and whimpers and aches to be held, a
love that is worn around fingers and yelled across
borders, we love beyond all else and before all
else and after all else our love remains and our
hope, the reason we cope and keep breathing, no
matter how many times we thought hands round
our throats, and we cry, tears are ours, we cry for
dead friends and misfortunes, we know that life is
our virtue and that there is strength to be found in
what hurts you, we were all born for burdens,
shoulders without burdens are no shoulders at all,
and so we remain dignified, fearless, peace
before fury, fury before apathy, humanity has
01:40:21
ravaged itself with barbarities since stories but yet
to be told, for all those who are not here, who
survive in our memories, let’s do what we can
now to honor their legacy, and so here is my
closing, it takes many waves to make up an
ocean, many currents, many rivers, many
streams, but then it all flows as one in the end. I
am here because I believe we began as one and
we will be one again. So my humble respects and
gratitude to you D Suu and for those still suffering
let us not forget them, peace and freedom for
everyone, for all children, for all women, for all
men.
01:31:18:00
Bono with Damien Rice performing Walk On.
01:35:10:21
Bono: The great, unexplanabe stepping in for the
Edge, whose heart is broken this week, I think of
him and his loss as we sing this next one, which
is called One.
03:52:22
05:19:04
Bono with Damien Rice performing One.
01:40:29:24
Bill Shipsey: She was announced as the 2009
winner of the Ambassador of Conscience Award
and that was announed on stage by Bono in
Crow Park, just a few miles from here (cut to
footage from the night in the park); but of course
she was under house arrest and she wasn’t
allowed to come and accept her aware. IT took
her a little under 3 years from the announcement
for her to be free and to come to Dublin to accept
her award.
01:40:53:02
Bono: D Suu, thank you for being with us tonight.
We are humbled, we are greatful. While some
might be scratching their heads as one of the first
trips overseas you decide on our small rock in the
north Atlantic – no one here is scratching their
heads, we know why you came to Dublin, it’s to
hold our hand for the Italy game. It is one of the
0:23:01
03:18:18
great ironies that by your confinement, by giving
up your chance to enjoy the world, the world has
become your home. Oslo was your home this
morning, London will be your home tonight.
Dublin is your home this evening; __ welcome
home. Now around here we know all too well that
violent revolution is the way the world has
remade itself from the beginning of time and that
bores at the heart of the human story, but you, D
Suu, believe in something different. That war can
be unlearned and rejected, that we can reboot the
human spirit through hard reflection and
rigourous actions. If Pascal was right when he
suggested that all of humanities problems stem
from man’s inability to sit still in a room, well
thank god you’re a woman. Thank god you’re a
woman. For 23 years is a long time to sit still. And
Yates would say, “Peace comes dropping slow,”
from you we get the feeling that peace is not just
the absence of war around us, but the absence of
war within us, and of the foundations of a better
future are better laid by mortars spared of blood.
And that is why the Amnesty Award was created,
with the hope that every so often someone whose
ideas are as noble as their ambitions, someone
like that might come along and claim it. And here
you are, receiving this award, but the honor is
ours, the honor is to be in your presence.
Everbody’s here to sing to you tonight, but it’s
your song that everybody wants to hear. It’s your
song we need on the radio all over the world,
your words, your topline melody. It’s a timeless
song, and it seems more important this time than
ever before, please welcome to the stage D Aung
San Suu Kyi. (clapping, she makes her way to
stage)
01:44:11:19
(Presenting the Ambassador of Conscience
Award to Aung San Suu Kyi)
Aung San Suu Kyi speaks: All this has been
totally unexpected. To receive this award is to
remind me that 24 years ago I took on duties from
03:41:12
which I shall never be relieved. But you have
given me the strength to carry on, that I should
not be alone as I go about the discharging of my
duties. SO many people have asked me what it
feels like to come out of Burma for the first time in
24 years; this journey actually started with a short
trip to Thailand, a couple of weeks ago, and now
I’ve been to Switzerland, Norway, and now I’m
here this evening in Ireland. And now I know the
answer, when people ask me how does it feel:
moving, is the word. By moving, I mean a stirring
of the heart, as well as a new impetus towards
good that we’ve been looking to for the last 24
years. You have helped us greatly; I have to
confess that I never knew how many people
cared for us, and for our cause, until I started out
on this journey, which started out in Thailand, as I
said, a couple of weeks ago, I was amazed and
deeply touched and moved by the warmth that
the Thais showed, that they demonstrated for me
and for my cause, and again on this journey to
the west, in Switzerland, in Norway, and now
here in Ireland, I’ve discovered how much more
people care. I had not expected this, I had not
known how much they cared. This has come as a
surprise to me, and a very moving one I feel very
close to you. The British used to refer to the
Burmese as the Irish of the East; we never quite
understood why, some said it was because we
never gave them any peace, and we were very
rebellious, and others said that it was because
our men like their drink and we were all rather
superstitious. But for whatever reason, tonight I
feel proud to be your Eastern counterpart, I am
very happy to be an Irish affiliate. (applause).
Throughout these yearrs Amnesty International
have helped us to keep our small wick of self
respect alight; you have helped us to kee the
light. And we hope that you will be with us in the
years to come, that you will be able to join us in
our dreams, and not take either your eyes or your
mind off us, to not be the country that hope and
history murders. Thank you.
01:47:53:05
I don’t know that I could ever remember another
political leader, other than a Ghandi or a Martin
Luther King, mentioning kindness, you know
people talk about justice, people talk about
human rights, but they don’t talk about something
and as basic and as fundamental as human
kindness. I think she goes back to Burma full of
heart and full of hope that she’s made a number
of important friends that will stick with Burma in
the years to come.
01:48:17:00
Bono and Damien Rice perform I Shall Be

Bono: Everyone who was involved with this show
should be on the stage by the end of the song.
SO send the message if it hasn’t already got out.
