About Carolinas Wind Orchestra... Carolinas Wind Orchestra was formed over twenty years ago as an integral part of the Winthrop University music curriculum for advanced wind and per-cussion players. Today about 10% of our performers are still Winthrop stu-dents, who receive academic credit when they rehearse with Dr. Lorrie Cro-chet’s 90-piece CWO ensemble on Monday nights. The other musicians are adults from eight North Carolina and South Carolina counties in the greater Charlotte area –– all volunteers, each selected by audition, over 75% holding at least a bachelor’s degree in music, and roughly half still working in (or re-tired from) 6th grade through graduate school music education. We are now a non-profit corporation with the formal objective of “perpetuating the commu-nity concert band as part of the tradition of American music, doing so by pub-lic performance of concert band literature played by musicians of advanced proficiency.“
Dr. Lorrie Crochet, Music Director of Carolinas Wind Orchestra, is currently associate professor of music and director of bands at Winthrop University,
where she also chairs music education, and teaches instrumental music education courses. Dr. Crochet earned her bachelor’s degree in music education from the University of Missouri at Kansas City, and both her master’s degree in wind conducting and doctorate in music education from the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida, where she studied with Gary Green and Nicholas DeCarbo. Dr. Crochet has served as a clinician, guest conductor, and adju-
dicator in eight states and the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clin-ic in Chicago. She was selected for Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers for 1992, 1995, 1999, 2002, and 2004. She currently holds memberships in the National Association for Music Education, the South Central District of the North Carolina Band Directors Association, the College Band Directors Nation-al Association, the South Carolina Music Educators Association, the South Car-olina Bandmasters Association, Pi Kappa Lambda (honorary society for music educators), and Phi Beta Mu (honorary society for bandmasters).
About VOX... VOX, the official chorus of the Firebird Arts Alliance, is dedicated to combining community building with choral excellence. A semi-professional chamber choir of 20-30 singers, VOX strives to perform the most authentically diverse musical styles of any choral ensemble in the region. Founded in 2007, VOX has

collaborated with innumerable artists and communities, including Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter Kathy Mattea, dozens of choirs from throughout North Carolina, the Charlotte Symphony, Jazz, Baroque and Phil-harmonic Orchestras, Opera Carolina, and several dance companies. VOX is the lead choir in Firebird’s major projects — Singin’ Black and White, and the Piedmont Baroque Consortium.
David Tang, conductor, is the director of the Firebird Arts Alliance, the semi-professional choir VOX, and the music ministry at Sharon Presbyterian Church.
The Firebird Arts Alliance fosters collaboration be-tween regional artists from all disciplines and back-grounds in order to build better community, and has facilitated collaborations between hundreds of artists of all styles and reached over half a million people since its founding in 2007. Dr. Tang also produces and conducts performances for Opera Carolina. Before his current associations, Tang directed choral organi-zations including Carolina Voices, the Oratorio Singers of Charlotte (now the Charlotte Symphony Chorus),
and the Choral Arts Society of Philadelphia. He has also served on the orches-tra conducting staffs of the Charlotte, Wheeling, Quad City, and Charleston Symphony Orchestras. He has led hundreds of choral, symphonic, opera, and ballet performances throughout the United States, and served on the faculties of Davidson College and West Virginia University. Dr. Tang is also an Emmy and Telly Award-winning TV producer and conducted the nationally televised American premiere of British tenor Russell Watson.
About The Patriot Singers… The Women's Ensemble and Chamber Choir are the upper-level choirs in the
Independence High School Patriot Singers program, run by Kristine "Kiki" Neale for the past eight years. In addition to performing with VOX, Kiki has worked with several other choral groups in the area — Sine Nomine, Impromptu, The Burli Singers at St. Peter's, and the Ethos Consortium — and is the music wor-ship leader at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Charlotte. She enjoys occasional gigs with local big bands, provides music for weddings, and accompa-
nies other groups and musicians in the Charlotte area.

The Winds...
A Festival Prelude Alfred Reed When American composer Alfred Reed conducted the premier of this classic in 1956, he said, “The work was conceived specifically in terms of its title as an opening…the music was to establish a bright and brilliant mood throughout, with no other connota-tion in mind.” Two fanfare-like motifs and a main theme occur throughout the compo-sition, using the brass and woodwinds separately, then combined, to impart tone col-or and majesty. The close is a final statement of the main theme, developed in mas-sive brass chords to a thundering conclusion.
The Eighth Candle: Prayer and Dance for Hanukkah Steve Reisteter Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights, commemorates a victory by the Maccabees over the tyrant Antiochus in 165 BCE. Legend has it that there was only a single day’s supply of kosher oil for the ceremonial lamps needed for an eight-day dedication of a new tem-ple –– yet by some miracle, the lamps burned the entire time. Hanukkah is celebrated over eight days in the family home rather than at the synagogue, where in modern times one candle is lit for each day of the holiday, prayers are recited, and all enjoy

feasting and fun. Reisteter, a contemporary composer from Pennsylvania, captured this with an extended hymn-like section, followed by an exciting dance of celebration.
Old Scottish Melody Charles A. Wiley Despite its strong association with New Year's Eve, Auld Lang Syne (lyrics by Robert Burns in 1793 and set to a traditional folk tune a few years later) was never intended for a holiday setting…the title translates idiomatically to “times gone by”, and the words are about remembering friends from the past. But when Guy Lombardo’s dance orchestra included this old Scottish melody as transition music, just after midnight during their 1930 New Year’s Eve radio broadcast, it inadvertently spawned a global tradition. Today Auld Lang Syne is indeed one of the most recognizable songs in the English speaking world. Charles A. Wiley, longtime band director at Lamar University, created this very traditional and beautiful arrangement in 1977.
Three London Miniatures Mark Camphouse Mark Camphouse, Director of Concert Bands, Composition, and Conducting at George Mason University, created this three-movement original work after a visit to London following the death of Princess Diana in 1997. Today CWO features only the march. Westminster Hymn, an original Anglican hymn tune with intermittent brass fanfares For England's Rose, an expressive, lyrical tribute to the Princess Diana Kensington March, a spirited, petite march in the English style
The Voices and the Winds together… On With the Snow Douglas Wagner Doug Wagner, originally from Chicago, is a retired high school music educator — and an internationally recognized composer and arranger, with over 2,500 titles published for sacred and secular choir, concert band, orchestra, handbell ensemble, organ, piano, solo instrument and solo voice, and more than fifteen million copies of his music sold! This is one of his sparkling arrangements, a medley of three pop favorites always heard this time of year...yet with no mention of any holiday in their lyrics! Sleigh Ride, music by Leroy Anderson, lyrics by Mitchell Parish Winter Wonderland, music by Felix Bernard, lyrics by Richard Smith Let it Snow! Let it Snow! Let it Snow!, music by Jule Styne, lyrics by Sammy Cahn
A Christmas Festival Leroy Anderson By 1950 Leroy Anderson had already seen six of his original compositions for orchestra premiered by the Boston Pops, and was well on his way to becoming one of the most popular composers of light music in America. Arthur Fiedler wanted to record a special piece at their December performance that year, and asked Anderson to arrange a con-cert overture around themes from holiday music. This blend of seven well known car-ols plus Jingle Bells into an overture, not just a simple medley, has become a classic.
