The issue stemmed from a corporate VP questioning the decision to voice-track Memorial Day and asking his PDs to come up with a better plan for Independence Day. Needless to say, there is a wide range of opinions on the issue. Here are a few we’ve received: • Bill Black, PD, WKSJ/Mobile: “Voice- tracking is a great tool when used properly. With all the demands on-air PDs have these days, you must take advantage of voice-tracking. However, that is no excuse for presenting a poor product. In Mobile, the only holidays I allow for my regular staff are Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. Even then, they voice-track a very compelling show, usually with lots of “best of” bits. I would hope that everyone knew going into this business that there are no off-days. It’s not like we turn things off Friday at 5pm and start again on Monday. Radio is what it is.” • Bob Glasco, Consultant: “Who is your customer? Do you care about him or her? Of course you do. This is another gift from Arbitron via PPM. When we were diary-driven, we didn’t necessarily get penalized if one day during the survey period was not business as usual. My Tunes: Music ThaT shaPed My Life

KUSS/San Diego PD/morning personality Cindy Spicer discusses her most influential songs, albums and concerts:1. Rolling Stones, Voodoo Lounge Tour, Berlin, 1995: It was in Hitler’s Olympic Stadium. My mother left her family in East Germany before the wall and didn’t see them for 16 years. So the combination of the Stones and the location was pure emotion for me.2. Randy Travis, Always And Forever:

I was in Pop radio, but played this cassette over and over. Something about his voice and songs put me in a great mood.3. Shakira, Dónde Están Los Ladrones: I listened to this album for six weeks straight on a sailboat in Cartagena, Colombia before Shakira was known outside of Colombia. I was trying to parrot her words to improve my Spanish diction and it opened me up to the music of Carlos Vives, Juanes and its passionate, poetic lyrics-and-music-base that’s like country music.4. Michael Franti, Uptown Theatre, Napa, 2011: It was part of the Live In The Vineyard promotion with Hot AC artists. We need to get more country artists involved!5. Keith Urban, House of Blues, Los Angeles, 2009: Keith is amazing every concert, but this was intimate and he was on fire!• A highly regarded song or album you’ve never heard: I probably have heard Radiohead, but I wouldn’t know it if I was listening to them.• An “important” piece of music you just don’t get: At the risk of angering lots of Beatles fans — I like the Beatles, just maybe not as much as Beatles fans.• One obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: Everyone should listen to Mumford & Sons’ “Sigh No More.”• An album you played or listened to incessantly: Zac Brown Band’s The Foundation and You Get What You Give.

Average Joes’ Corey Smith puts an industry spin on the artist interview:1. What station did you grow up listening to? It was probably WNNX (99X)Atlanta, which was an alternative rock station when alt rock was at its peak. They would play Shawn Mullins, Matchbox 20, Hootie & the Blowfish and Dave Matthews Band. As far as Country, WYAY (Y106)/Atlanta was always on at my grandma’s house.

2. When was the first time you heard yourself on the radio? My wife always listens to WUBL/Atlanta when she’s taking the kids to school, picking them up and going to the grocery store. One morning, she was taking my youngest to preschool at like nine o’clock. She got back in the car, turned it on and my single was playing. She came running into the house and goes, “You’re on the radio!” I ran outside and caught the last verse. It’s life-changing when the radio stations close to home start playing your music. It means a lot to the friends, family and fans who’ve been there from early on. The Bull was the first station to add “Twenty-One.” 3. What nasty truck stop food tempts you? Fried chicken livers and boiled peanuts.4. Who in radio has made the biggest impression on you so far? Lance Houston at The Bull has been a huge supporter, but I’ve met a lot of people. And, Mike Kennedy in Kansas City has been a big supporter. It was really important for us to have someone close to home that was not only a believer, but also would actually step up and play it. And not just play it, but play it a lot. Lance was the first person to do that, and it’s always going to mean a lot to me. 5. Which regional is the worst driver? Jay Cruze because he doesn’t pay attention. He’s got his iPhone in his hand and he can’t stop checking his email. Labels should have a policy with their radio reps not allowing them to use cell phones while their artists are in the car. 6. What question do you never want to answer again? Who are your influences? But I know I’m always going to get that question because it’s standard. But it’s a really broad question for an artist.

You Call This Independence? (continued from page 1)Were we right in taking the day off from serving our customer? No, but we did it because we thought it was the right thing to do for our staff and their families. Bottom line: All of us signed on for a 24/7 business that we love. If we are going to successfully fend off the new delivery systems and other distractions, we will only succeed if we remember the customer always comes first.”

• Kenny Shelton, PD/mornings, WYYD/Roanoke, VA: “I’ll put my vote in for modern technology. We give the talent time off to recharge their batteries and enjoy some important family time. If you have good talent (and we do), and the content is appropriate for the day (it is), how it’s delivered isn’t important.” • Phil Becker, OM, WBTU/Ft. Wayne,

IN: “No matter the day, live programming is best. Now that everyone has the technology to do voice-tracking and automation, we have lost our way. We’d be foolish to think the audience says, ‘Well, it’s a holiday, so I understand the product doesn’t need to be as good. If you took your family out to dinner on a holiday, would you say, ‘It’s OK that the service is poor and the food isn’t as good as it could be. It’s a holiday, so I’ll settle?’ The only argument I would entertain is the one about giving your hard-working employees time off for the holiday. In that instance, though, you fill them with your part-time players so that listeners can still interact. Oh, wait! I forgot you fired all of them because of the same technology that led to this question.” • Scott Letourneau, Afternoons, Dial Global Pure AC:

Dolly Parton Better Day (Dolly/WMN) Emmylou Harris, Randy Kohrs, Alison Krauss, Daily & Vincent and the Isaacs appear on Parton’s follow-up to Backwoods Barbie. Parton wrote all 12 tracks including the lead single “Together You And I.” “Country Is As Country Does” was co-written with Mac Davis. Kent Wells produced and Parton executive-produced.

“There aren’t many exceptions to all of radio being tracked every day already. Of course, all but a few places will track July 4, as well, so there won’t be much less quality.”  • Toby Tucker, PD/afternoons, WDZQ/Decatur, IL: “If you have the right jocks in place, you can easily trust them to voice-track a quality show. One thing we often forget as industry people is that the average person doesn’t even know we can voice-track. If you think as you did as a radio listener, way back before you got into the industry, you will quit over-analyzing many things and save yourself a lot of headaches and worry.”  • Myla Thomas, Mornings, WBVR/Bowling Green, KY: “Voice-track! Give us a day off!”
