The latest Global Peace Index shows that while Europe was once again ranked the most peaceful region in the world, with Iceland, Denmark and Austria remaining the highest- ranking countries, the average score deteriorated, ‘reflecting increases in the impact of terrorism as well as the escalation of violence and instability in Turkey and the coun- try’s deteriorating relations with its neighbours’. However, the situation doesn’t seem to be dampening Kiwi interest in travel to the continent. . . . Local Response Flight Centre New Zealand general manager retail Sue Matson says on the whole, New Zealanders are ‘quite resilient’. “While these tragedies have certainly made travellers more vigilant, aside from directly after the attacks, we haven’t seen this impact on the number of Kiwis travelling to Europe. In fact, France has seen growth in the last 12 months com- pared to the year prior.” Matson adds that Spain, Germany and Greece have also seen ‘considerable growth’ in bookings during the past 12 months. Contiki’s bookings mirror this senti- ment and it says ‘Europe will always be on the travel bucket list for young Kiwis’. In response to demand, the youth operator has this year intro- duced new itineraries to Iceland, the Balkans and the Mediterranean. In turn, while House of Travel hasn’t seen any significant growth as such, travel to Europe has re- mained steady and in line with 2014 and 2015, says commercial director Brent Thomas. However, he notes that numbers for Turkey are down, but attributes some of that to the 100th ANZAC commemorations. “We saw a large spike in travel to Turkey last year, which has created a bit of a vacuum this year—if you were going to travel to Turkey, last year was the time to go.” Thomas advises clients to refer to advice on the Government’s safe travel website before embarking on a holiday. Air New Zealand has taken out both the international and do-mestic airline titles in the fifth annual Roy Morgan New Zealand Customer Satisfaction Awards, held in Auckland overnight.“Air New Zealand scored a rare double: the airline not only contin-ued its streak as the top domestic airline, but finally pipped Emirates to claim international airline too,” says Roy Morgan. The awards are judged on surveys of more than 13,000 Kiwi consumers carried out throughout the year.NZ says the latest awards reflects its ‘re-lentless focus’ on customer experience.“We operate in one of the world’s

most competitive industries and delivering a seamless experience to our customers, irrespective of where on our network they are travelling, is something we pride ourselves on,” says gm customer experience Carrie Hurihanganui. “We have been very focused on enhancing our customers’ journeys, including making sub-stantial investments in new aircraft, new and refreshed lounges, and in-novative technology. It’s great to see these efforts being recognised by our customers.”

More Sniffer DogsCustoms detector dogs have proved their worth by sniffing out almost $10 million in undeclared and concealed cash at the border in the three years since they were introduced—and the government now wants more of the pups.“Budget 2016 has allocated over $500,000 funding for five addition-al dogs bringing the total number of detection teams from 13 to 18,” says Customs Minister Nicky Wagner. “This will be a big boost to Customs’ detection capabilities and help provide greater coverage, more assurance, and an extra layer of enforcement at the border.”Last year, detector dogs made 202 cash indications, sniffing out more than $3.7 million, and this year they’ve already sniffed out just over $1.5 million. In most cases, passengers have been able to fill in a border cash report and keep their money, adds Wagner.

Airways MoUAirways New Zealand and UK-based NATS have signed a Memorandum of Understanding setting the founda-tion for collaboration between the two. The deal is aimed at enhancing air traffic management capabilities and will allow the exchange of infor-mation and expertise while opening the way for collaboration on planning and research. “In Asia Pacific particu-larly, we are facing an unprecedented level of air traffic growth and given the cross border nature of air traffic management, this kind of joint ap-proach is necessary to achieve the full potential of safe, efficient and sustainable operations,” says Airways chief executive Ed Sims.
