PAMPLONA,the fiesta starts

From July 6th to 14th every year the word fiesta is written in cap-ital letters in Pamplona. The SANFERMINES have arrived. When thechupinazo (ceremonial rocket) is fired the city explodes into life.Thousands of people from all over the world descend on the city, which dresses up in red and white. For nine days the streets turninto a feast of friendship, joy, music and non-stop partying, to therhythm of the charangas and the peñas.

THE ENCIERRO (Bull Run) is the only moment of the day when theparty stops, and great tension descends on the route just a few min-utes before the bulls start their ‘race’ behind the mozos (youngmen). The surge of emotions culminates in the bullring at the endof the run. The fiesta continues with caldico (clear broth) choco-late with churros (long doughnuts), the Gigantes (ceremonialgiants) and Cabezudos (carnival figures with big heads), the aper-itif, the bullfight in the evening, or the fireworks at night. Thesethen give way to all-night partying.

AND AFTER THE FIESTA... COMES THE CALM. After experiencingthis world-famous fiesta, what better way to enjoy a deserved restby visiting one the most welcoming parts of Navarre. Relax in thegreen Pyrenees, stroll through leafy oak and beech woods, orswim in a crystal-clear river. If you prefer, head south to meet thewarm and friendly people of La Ribera and the plains under the hotsun, and enjoy the gastronomy of the Ebro valley.

Txupinazo Programme

Every 6th of July at 12 noon, the “txupinazo”(ceremonial rocket) is fired from the TownHall’s balcony and this officially opens theFiesta. Following the tradition, thousands ofpeople, dressed in white and with a red scarf intheir hands, start gathering at the Town Hall

Square from 10 am, singing and cheering Saint Fermin while theyeagerly wait for the designated councillor to fire the “txupinazo”.In that very moment, everybody puts their read scarf round theirnecks and opens bottles of cava. The whole square “explodes” andturns into a gigantic celebration where everybody starts dancingas the City’s Music Band comes out from the Town Hall and playswhile making their way through the crowd.

We offer our clients exclusive use of balconies overlooking the TownHall Square, privileged locations from where they can watch theopening of the festivities and share the emotion of the crowd gath-ered at the square. Our guides will meet the clients at a hotel locat-ed in the city’s old quarters at 10:30 am., Then the clients will betaken to their balconies, where they will enjoy a snack while theyare told about the origins, history and traditions associated withSanfermines and the “txupinazo”. Cold drinks, wine and, of course, cava to toast to the beginning of the Fiesta, will also be included.

13

Bull Run BalconiesThe Bull Run takes place every morningfrom 7th to 14th July and starts at 8am,when the bulls leave the Santo DomingoCorral and cover the 830 m distance tothe bullring in approximately 3 min-utes. There are bull runs in many other

localities in Navarra, but the one in Pamplona is very special dueto its worldwide fame and to the size of the bulls, which weighbetween 500 kg and 700 kg. The international fame of Sanferminesresults in the participation of 2,000 -3000 runners each day. Theonly way to enjoy and participate of this event in life is from a bal-cony.

VIP BalconiesOur programme consists in hiring and securing places for ourclients at balconies on the first or second floors of buildings locat-ed along the course of the Bull Run, so to live fully the emotion ofthe race. Our guides and clients will meet at a nearby hotel at 6:30am and from there they will go to their respective balconies togeth-er. Those clients staying at hotels in the modern part o f the citywill be picked up by our own bus and taken directly to the meet-ing point. The clients will be accompanied by one of our guides.Once at the balcony the guide will provide a detailed descriptionof the Bull Run, its origin and history and all the rituals of the race. The guide will also explain some of the traditions followed by thelocals and all the small details of whatever happens at that momentin the street. All together will watch thebulls and runners racing by. After those moments full of emotions, and over a breakfast snack, the guide will provide further expla-nations while clients watch a replay of the televised coverage of thewhole Bull Run.

Standard BalconiesWe also organise the booking of Standard balconies in third andfourth floors along the running course without a local guide serv-ice. Once the booking is confirmed the client receives a voucherwhich will have to be presented at the address and time indicat-ed on it.

Breakfasts

Following the Bull Run, the Fiesta continues, but it is necessary torecover strength with a good breakfast. Doing this in a quiet andhassle-free venue is nearly impossible due to the huge crowdsgathered around the Bull Run route. However, we can offer ourclients the following two options to enjoy a relaxing breakfast.

VIP Breakfast

The Nuevo Casino Principal is a private club located in a mid 19thcentury building at the Plaza del Castillo (Castle Square), the veryheart of the city.We have exclusive access to the Casino’s Blue Room, where wehave arranged a buffet breakfast for our clients. After breakfast ourclients will be able to enjoy the Baile de La Alpargata (EspadrilleDance), held at the Casino’s Main Hall and attended sometimes byambassadors, celebrities and official dignitaries.

Standard breakfast

Hassle-free and relaxing buffet breakfast at a hotel located inPamplona’s old quarters.

Themed toursWe offer a wide range of trips and visits that complement theSanfermines programme, thus allowing our client to get to knowother aspects of Pamplona and the Navarrese gastronomy.

¡SAN FERMÍN! TOUR OF PAMPLONA’S OLD

QUARTERS.After the post-Bull Run breakfastwe will walk along the streets andwe will learn about Pamplona’s his-tory and origins, we will talkabout the ROUTE TO SANTIAGO

and we will even become pilgrims for a little while, we will havethe chance to watch the GIGANTES Y CABEZUDOS.LUNCH AT MOLINO ERROTA RESTAURANT, in Aoiz, a wonder-fully restored water mill. There we will be able to watch andlearn how to “escanciar” the cider, the technique of pouring thecider from a height directly from the barrel into the glass inorder to get air bubbles into the drink and give it the texture ofsparkling wine.

OTAZU WINE CELLARSThe history of the noble region ofOtazu dates back to medieval times.Since then, its buildings, people andarchitectural richness have develo-ped hand in hand with a thoroughdedication to its vineyards and themaking of unique wines.

Otazu has the most Northern vineyards in Spain where, dependingon the characteristics of the soil, varieties such as Merlot,Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay are grown andstrategically combined.A wine tasting session with expert explanations will complementthis visit.Following this stimulation of our tasting buds, José y Asun will offerus a novel gastronomic experience, their “cuisine with feeling”, forwhich they have carefully chosen each of their seasonal ingre-dients.

16

FINCA LA TEJERÍA

Miguel Reta, a herdsman of the Bull Run,will receive us in the Finca (ranch) LaTejería, where Navarrese fighting bullsare bred. This breed is characterised byrelatively small, bright red coated bullswhich are agile, alert, nervous and aggres-

sive as well as very brave. This breed was at the peak of its popu-larity between the 18th century and mid 19th century. By the mid20th century it had lost its importance due to the preferences ofthe new bullfighting style, which favoured bigger bulls that wouldram more readily and therefore, presented less complications to thebullfighter.

The visit to Finca La Tejería starts with an introductory explana-tion of the technical and scientific process involved in the recoveryof the Navarrese breed. This is followed by a walk on the country-side where there will be opportunities to get safely close to the freeranging bulls, to feed them and to take part in other routine cho-res of cattle farming. The visit will end with a “comida campera” (Pic-nic style).
