Withthenewsemesterbeginningandaninfluxofnewstudentsoncampus,itisimportanttoparticipateinmakingourcampuswelcomingandinclusiveforall.Onewaytodothatistouseastudentschosennameandtheircorrectpronouns.
Weshouldnotassumesomeonesgenderbytheirappearance,norbywhatislistedonarosterorinstudentinformationsystems.Transgenderpeopleandpeoplewhodonotidentitywithinthegenderbinarymayuseadifferentnamethantheirlegalnameandpronounsoftheirgenderidentity,ratherthanthepronounsofthesextheywereassignedatbirth.
IntroductionsInthefirstweeksofclasses,insteadofcallingroll,askeveryonetoprovidetheirnameandpronouns.Thisensuresyouarenotsinglingouttransgenderornonbinarystudents.Thenameastudentusesmaynotbetheoneontheofficialroster,andtherosternamemaynotbethesamegenderastheonethestudentnowuses.

Thispracticeworksoutsideoftheclassroomaswell.Youcanstartmeetingswithrequestingintroductionsthatincludenamesandpronouns,introduceyourselfwithyournameandchosenpronouns,orwhenprovidingnametags,askattendeestowriteintheirnameandpronouns.
GenderneutralpronounsWearefamiliarwiththesingularpronounsshe,her,hersandhe,him,his,butthosearenottheonlysingularpronouns.Infact,therearedozensofgenderneutralpronouns.
Afewofthemostcommonsingulargenderneutralpronounsarethey,them,their(usedassingular),ze,hir,hirs,andxe,xem,xyr.
Thesemaysoundalittlefunnyatfirst,butonlybecausetheyarenew.Thesheandhepronounswouldsoundstrangetooifwehadbeentaughtzewhengrowingup.
