Project Deliverables WP6: Testing & Technical Audit

The INCASS project delivers successfully innovative solutions

in condition monitoring for inspection and maintenance aspects.

A comprehensive testing and audit framework is necessary in

order to assess the methodology developed and increase the

application confidence to levels that are required for widespread

commercial implementation. This testing and audit framework is

developed through WP6 and specifically deliverables D6.1

“Overall System Testing and Auditing” and D6.2 “Technical

Audit Report”. The former concerns the description of the overall

testing and validation scheme using different scenarios

corresponding to different ship types. Meanwhile, the latter

concerns a comprehensive report, containing the results of said

audit, including functionalities, interfaces, quality assurance and

the integration of the Decision Support System (DSS) with the

Structural / Machinery Reliability / Risk Assessment (SRA/MRA)

tools developed.

The main aim of the INCASS project is to assist inspection bodies and ship operators’ daily routine in order to render ships safer to operate. Key objectives are related to presenting a comprehensive solution for a faster, more flexible and effective inspection and maintenance regime for ship structures and machinery based on innovative use of online machinery and structures condition monitoring, real time information and robotic applications.

The 8th Newsletter presents the most important developments of our project, which is well underway

its third and final year, as discussed and analysed during the eighth INCASS technical meeting,

organised by Bureau Veritas (BV), in Paris, France, between 02.03.2016 & 03.03.2016.

WP6 (Testing & Technical Audit) was also extensively discussed and final testing scenarios were

discussed. Accordingly, each partner’s contribution for each testing scenario was discussed. The use

of KPIs for the evaluation of the contribution of INCASS platform was decided.

WP2 (Intelligent Monitoring Systems) partners presented the overall status of the INCASS intelligent

monitoring systems. Results from multiple tests corresponding to different scenarios were shown.

These tests were performed using the full spectrum of solutions developed through INCASS project,

including crawlers, drones and photogrammetry applications. The results obtained through a case

study of the hull deformation monitoring were also discussed. Additional testing opportunities were

proposed.

WP3 (Structural Modelling and Analysis) presentation focused on how the modelling work performed

so far can be used to evaluate the damage in damage scenarios. After discussion, consensus was

reached on the importance of damage extent knowledge using either crew’s description or advanced

inspection methods such as those described in WP2. Additionally, the use of the data obtained

through hull deformation monitoring for structural condition assessment was elaborated between

partners.

Project Progress The eighth INCASS technical meeting was organised by Bureau Veritas (BV) in Paris, France on

the 2nd and 3rd of March 2016. A detailed description of the meeting can be found on the project

website.

WP4 was briefly mentioned as all tasks and deliverables have already been completed. Some

additional features have been added to the DSS tool to facilitate decision-making. Exploration and

analysis presented to partners was related to input, calculated and predicted data transfer and

manipulation

WP5 (Database Development and Implementation) work was presented related to tasks T5.6 “Ship-

Shore Communications”, and T5.7 “Central Stochastic Database”. The versatility of the tools

developed was highlighted. Different scenarios have been designed for the evaluation of the ship-

shore communication framework. Accordingly, the central stochastic database deliverable was

discussed.

Concerning WP7 (Case Studies), additional on-board machinery and ship structural

measurements were scheduled during April 2016. Furthermore, campaigns for the robotics

platform testing have been planned for mid-April 2016. Additional actions that could enhance

INCASS project were also discussed.

WP8 (Exploitation & Dissemination) concluded INCASS

meeting. The organisation of INCASS conference in Glasgow,

UK on the 13th and 14th of October 2016 was announced. The

organisation of an INCASS workshop during the Posidonia event

parallel to the INCASS participation in the event was also

formally announced. Multiple other events are being discussed,

including a presentation during EMSA / SEA Europe annual

meeting, and the possibility of a presentation at IMO

headquarters. Additionally, a Special Issue of the Ocean

Engineering journal will be published focusing on novel

inspection strategies for enhanced maritime safety and

operations. Multiple conference presentations have been

scheduled, including INCASS participation and presentation at

TRA2016. Finally, significant Advisory Board members’

feedback has been obtained and relevant future actions are

being considered.

All project publications and conference contributions are now

available in the project website.
