Alas we have had to cancel our Skippers Ticket workshop due to a lack of interest, however we have been inundated with a show of hands to do the MC driving training/assessment. Thank you to everyone who has so promptly been jumping through all the hoops that I keep putting in their way. Keen’s Driver Training will be in Lake Grace during the week beginning the 12th November. We now have numbers for our forklift workshop but am waiting to hear back from CY O’Connor—due to the proximity of harvest we may leave this workshop until the new year.

The CRC held their AGM this week; a huge thank you to our current committee members for putting up their hands to stay on board and a big welcome to Michelle Lay who has elected to join our committee. Our committee is as follows: Trish Medlen (Chair), Nanette Wallace (Vice Chair), Danielle Robertson (Treasurer), Mary Naisbitt, Ollie Farrelly, Paula Carruthers, Kerry Hitchins and Michelle Lay.

Would you and your business like a write up in the Lakes Link? We are only too happy to oblige. Please give us a call so that we can arrange an interview time.

Thank you to our Facebook friends who have given us a like! We need all of the likes that we can get. Living Communities is organising ‘Late Night Shopping’ for Lake Grace on the afternoon / evening of the 14th

December. If you would like to have a stall either for yourself or do some fundraising for your club then we would love to hear from you. It is an ideal opportunity to get together, have some fun and buy those last minute Christmas presents. Please call Peter Stoffberg (0428 511 838), Tracey Earnshaw (9865 1848) or Suzanne Reeves (9865 1470) if you would like more information. A big thank you to those organisations and individuals who have already put their names forward.

Have you switched over to digital TV? Applications for the Australian Government’s Satellite Subsidy Scheme are now open in Lake Grace. To submit your claim you need to go to the Digital Ready website www.digitalready.gov.au/subsidy or give them a call on 1800 20 10 13 (8am-10pm AEST 7 days). If you aren’t confident about submitting your claim yourself then please drop into the Lake Grace CRC and we will help you submit your claim. EVERYONE in Lake Grace is eligible for the government assistance, if you aren’t a pensioner then you will have to pay $250 but no more. Residents are encouraged to submit their claim prior to 24th December 2012.

Last weekend Craig and I had the pleasure of spending time in Nyabing for their centenary along with many other ex residents. It was a great opportunity to catch up with people we hadn’t seen in many years. The town had certainly dressed itself up but it was refreshing to see that the layout of the grocery store hadn’t changed much in the 20+ years since I pushed my trolley around it. I had read there had been no parking in Ongerup the previous weekend when they held their centenary and I can attest there wasn’t much left in Nyabing last weekend!

We have been getting some rave reviews about the native garden out the front of the Library/CRC building. If you would like to spend some time with the Beyond Gardens team and perhaps ask some questions we will be hosting some regionally focussed gardening shows via Westlink. A program for the Great Southern will be held on Wednesday 31st October (next week) and one for the Wheatbelt will be held on Wednesday 21st November. Shows will run from 10am to 11am and morning tea will be supplied. If you have a question it will need to be emailed in (we can do this for you) along with photographs if necessary.

The Lake Grace Community Resource Centre seminar room was a buzz on Friday 19

th October with year 8

students enthusiastically participating in a First Aid Course.

The fast paced comprehensive course was run by Ravensthorpe volunteer First Aid trainer Mrs Helen Laycock. Normally run as a two day course students were able to do the first day of theory at school by viewing a disc. The second day contained the hands on practical. Covered in the practical were allergic reactions, asthma, bites and stings including marine, bleeding, fracture, burns, choking, heart condition, head

injuries, resuscitation and bandaging.

Lake Grace principal John Boyland said “the year 8 girls were required to do the first aid course as part of their emergency services cadet training and the boys were participating as part of their general education”.

The course covers all facets of First Aid you may encounter at home, with family, while at work, playing sport or in the community.

Mrs Laycock said “participants are awarded a senior first aid certificate which is valid for 3 years. This looks good on CV’s or job applications, as it demonstrates

maturity and forward thinking”.

This is the second time Mrs Laycock has been involved with training Lake Grace students and said “Implementing the First Aid training was a credit to Lake Grace District High School”.

Comments by some students Marcia Trevenen – Really fun with scenario’s and activities. Chloe Robertson - Really interesting and full of facts. Bianca Kennedy – During a simulation I accidently over dosed on Tic Tac’s that represented Aspirin. Emily Parker – Good things to learn.

A "coffeehouse or "café" is an establishment which primarily serves prepared coffee or other hot beverages. Historically cafés have been important social gathering points. They continue to be venues where people gather to talk, write, read, entertain one another, or pass the time in a relaxed atmosphere.

Caffe Arjo Owners - Richard and Amy Jones

Richard Jones - was brought up in Cornwall, England. After leaving school Richard started work on a dairy farm milking 150 head of cows. While working on the dairy farm Richard broke his ankle really badly, he was helicopter air lifted out and spent 14 weeks on crutches.

From the dairy farm Richard entered into the building industry as a Building Site Supervisor.

Amy Jones nee Packard - was born in Nyabing. The Packard family, had a farm, which they sold when Amy was 2 years old and the family moved to Perth. After finishing school, Amy completed teachers training. Then went travelling to the UK for 12 months.

While in the UK friends introduced Richard to Amy, he was able to get Amy a job with the same building firm.

They came to WA where Richard got a job as a courier in Perth, he now knows how to get around Perth better than most Aussies. Richard and Amy became engaged in December 2005 and married in October 2006. Amy taught at Albany primary school for a year.

It was while doing seasonal work for the King family (family friends of Amy's) Richard discovered he liked life here at Lake Grace. So much so in fact he suggested to Amy that she apply for a teaching job here. Meanwhile Richard kept an ear out for a service the area needed.

Amy’s application was successful, she taught at Lake Grace DHS for 6 years. Home Maintenance seemed a good option so Richard set himself up doing that. He had plenty work but, as soon as he did any work involving climbing a ladder the ankle he broke played up.

A career change was in order. The couple kept looking for something else to do. They listened to what people were saying the town needed. The need for somewhere to take family and friends for a coffee and lunch on Saturdays became apparent.

They first approached the existing café at the time, to see if they would sell. When that didn't work out they began to consider opening a second café in town.

They weighed up the commitment to opening on Saturdays, visitors to town, through traffic and businesses like CBH expanding. Everything pointed to the town being big enough for another café. The couple decided they could make it work.

It was a big job to get the café Arjo from the raw shell of a building to the modern stylish thriving café you see today. They needed to design and build everything from scratch including the kitchen.

“The most difficult thing” said Amy “was deciding on a name. We would come up with the best ideas only to discover they’d been taken. We wanted an ‘Italian’ feel, so we looked at all sorts of Italian words, but every one was either taken , or too complicated to pronounce. We ended up with Arjo, a combination of Richard and Amy Jones. But we kept the Italian spelling of café which has two f’s - Caffe. We now wish we hadn't - everyone thinks it’s a spelling mistake!

Arjo’s opened on 25th September 2010 they discovered shortly after that Isaac was on the way. He was born on 4th July 2011. Since the birth of Isaac Amy does some relief teaching as well as helping out at Arjo’s. The learning curve was huge. Trying to cater for different customer tastes has been one of the largest challenges . “Predicting how many staff to have on at any one time and whether it will be busy or quiet is the other big challenge” said Amy “and often determines how quickly we get food served”.

“Whilst Arjo’s believe in employing young vibrant local people”, said Richard “we believe it is healthy to bring bright young travellers to the town”.

Having a café meant Richard and Amy experienced first hand the effect shopping locally has on their bottom line. Arjo’s are very pro ‘shop local’ and see that as a direct way of growing the town.

“We also try to give back to the community by supporting local organisations or charities that have an effect in our community through our ‘book swap’” said Amy. So far Arjo’s have supported the RFDS, Lake Grace Toy Library, Lake Grace Men's Shed, Murdoch University Chiropractic, Hands on India, the current charity is Heart Kids.

Hale School boarder Harrison Slarke is making a beautiful noise in his design and technology class.

Originally from Lake Grace, 16-year-old Harrison handcrafted a wooden electric guitar for his final project and amazed teachers, parents and fellow students when he played it for the first time at the recent Hale School House Arts Cup.

“Most of the people who I told that the guitar I played on stage was built by me were shocked,” he said.

The body of the guitar was crafted from a combination of American swamp ash and maple wood, chosen for their ability to make the instrument sturdy, but being light enough to help produce a unique sound.

“The sound is best related to a crisp twang that is similar to that of what you would hear in Jimi Hendrix’s music,” Harrison said. The young musician took an entire semester to construct the guitar and the instrument is a world away from the wooden keyholder he created as his first project in class five years ago.

His well developed skills in design and technology were assisted by his guitar teacher Steven Sutherland, who had built a guitar before and guided him in the project.

After all his hard work Harrison has some sage advice for budding regional rockers who want to create their own instruments. “Do their research to purchase the

best value-for-money materials,” he said.

The Nationals WA will introduce a Fuel Card for volunteer emergency services organisations across regional Western Australia, should they retain the balance of power at the 2013 State election.

The policy, announced at The Nationals WA Campaign Launch in Toodyay today, will provide Emergency Service Volunteer organisations with a fuel card valued at $2000 per annum, as an acknowledgement of the support they provide to regional communities.

State President Colin Holt said the Emergency Volunteers Fuel Card would support the hundreds of volunteer emergency services organisations in regional WA.

Emergency service volunteers in our regions do an outstanding job and The Nationals WA recognise that regional communities could not function without them,” Mr Holt said.

"This initiative will go some way to acknowledging the great work of volunteers and make their job that little bit easier.”

The card will be made available to more than 700 emergency service units across regional WA, including St John Ambulance, the State Emergency Service, the Marine Rescue Service, and more than 500 volunteer bush fire brigades.

Potential uses include travelling for training or events; transporting and servicing equipment or as a reward for volunteers.

Mr Holt said it was appropriate to introduce the Emergency Volunteers Fuel Card in Toodyay, given the incredible efforts of local volunteers to combat bushfires in the region in 2009.

“The Emergency Volunteers Fuel Card is an acknowledgement of support for the incredible work our volunteers do to protect regional communities, particularly in a crisis.”

Mr Holt said the Emergency Volunteers Fuel Card would add to previously announced election commitments, including the Regional Cities initiative, the Goldfields Strategic Investment Plan and a boost to the Country Aged Pension Fuel Card.

Mr Holt said the Campaign Launch highlighted the work Royalties for Regions is doing to improve the lives of those living and working in regional areas.

“The only way to ensure Royalties for Regions continues in its current form is to support The Nationals WA at the 2013 State Election.”

To find out more about the Emergency Volunteers Fuel Card visit www.nationalswa.com.

Sit back Lake Grace and enjoy the story of the lady who gives her name to our town. Thank you to Allan Zweck for his research efforts. The wreck of the Georgette on the 1st December 1876 was to be one of the most memorable wreck events in Western Australia's history, thanks to the daring of two rescuers who plucked men, women and children from the raging surf. Georgette Built in 1872 at Dumbarton in Scotland for H. Martini, as a Collier (a bulk cargo ship which carried coal). The Georgette was sold in 1873 to Connor and McKay of WA for £14,000, (a mid-level government servant at the time earned c. £100 PA). She arrived at Fremantle in September 1873 for the coastal trading and passenger service between Fremantle, Albany and Champion Bay. The Georgette used a combination of sail and steam power.

The Georgette was stranded on the Murray Reef in October 1873 and sent to Adelaide for an overhaul. She re-entered service in March 1874. Nine months before it was wrecked, the Georgette was involved in what many consider to be the most intriguing episode of Western Australia's colonial era. An American whaler, the Catalpa, had just arrived, and naturally everyone assumed it was in WA waters to catch whales. But this was not the case. It was seeking a human cargo - a small group of Fenians, members of the Irish Republican Brotherhood, who were languishing in Fremantle Prison. The audacious rescue plan had been hatched in Boston by fellow Fenian, John Boyle O'Reilly, who had himself escaped WA aboard an American whaler some years before. Despite a few nail-biting glitches, the mission was a success. Once the alarm was raised, the Georgette was sent off in pursuit. Armed with a twelve-pound howitzer, it fired warning shots across the Catalpa's bow and drew alongside. A stand-off ensued, with Captain Anthony of

the Catalpa denying he had the six Fenians on board, and pointing to the Stars & Stripes fluttering above, claimed they were now in international waters and that any attempt to board the vessel would create a costly diplomatic incident. His bluff succeeded and the Catalpa was allowed to sail away. A tumultuous welcome awaited the Fenians in America. Events of the ill-fated voyage The 29th November 1876 the Georgette would make her final voyage. Under the command of Captain Godfrey and carrying 50 passengers and a cargo of jarrah, the Georgette departed Fremantle bound for Adelaide, via Bunbury, Busselton and Albany. Midway between Cape Naturaliste and Hamelin Bay, just after midnight on the 1st December a leak developed possibly due to undetected damage done to the hull when the jarrah was being loaded. The leak worsened, as the pumps failed the ship was steered towards shore. By 4am most of the passengers had buckets in hand and were assisting with the bailing out. Two hours on, with the boiler room flooded, the Georgette was adrift in a rising swell. The lifeboats were swung out, with 20 passengers huddled in the first. A wave smashed it against the hull as it was being lowered, breaking it in two and sending all into the water. Two women and five children drowned, while the others were dragged from the waves by the second boat and taken ashore. A survivors story They were putting women and children into the life boat which was tied alongside and being tossed about by the waves. I was the last woman put into the boat and refused three times to go. I said “Why, its three parts full of water now”, but some man grabbed the baby out of my arms and gave him to a man standing up in the lifeboat. Then another man seized me under the arm pits and dropped me into the boat as a big wave lifted it high enough. I took my baby from the other man and found myself standing in water up to my knees and no seat left to sit down on. Just then another big wave struck the lifeboat and threw it against the ship's side. It broke clean in half from end to end, and I shall never forget the awful screams that went up. All in a few seconds we were struggling in the water and it was then that most of the lives were lost. I floated out on my back, saw the broken boat turn over and float away, and saw the Georgette for the last time. The next wave hid it from my view . My baby was rolled in a blanket like a little Indian baby. I had my left arm round him, holding him on top of my body, and I had my right arm and limbs rigid in an effort to keep on floating. I believed I was all alone as I could not see or hear anyone else. The hairpins were all gone and my hair was being washed about my head like seaweed. I remember going under twice then I was asleep.

Suddenly someone tugged my hair and I opened my eyes to see a little boat crammed with men, women and children. - Mrs Annie Simpson, a survivor of the wreck of the Georgette The Rescuers At the mouth of the Margaret River in WA’s South- West is “Wallcliffe”, the property of Mr Alfred Bussell. The Bussells were an original family of pioneers, “Wallcliffe” totalled 60 000 ac and was granted to him by the crown. Alfred built a big stone house for his family of seven girls and two sons. The girls worked as hard as the men on the place. They mustered the cattle, drove them and did everything that needed to be done. It was a terrible day outside. A high wind was blowing from the sea. Trees swayed and doors banged continually. The windows rattled before the rush of wind. Even above these sounds the roar of the waves half a mile away could be heard pounding ominously on the beach.

At their home Mrs Bussell and daughter, Grace, who was nearly 16 years old, were in the kitchen preparing for the festive season. Grace had been having a reoccurring dream, of which, she had spoken to her mother about on other occasions. “I had that dream again last night mother” said Grace. “I saw a ship just outside the breakers attempting to lower boats into the raging surf. As soon as they touched the water the boats were swamped and the passengers cast into the water”. A door opened and banged shut. A dusty figure, followed by a gust of fine white sand had entered. Sam Isaacs, the Bussells aboriginal stockman stood in the kitchen “Away down the coast I could see a ship. I fear she is going ashore”. Instructing Sam to saddle horses and with telescope in hand Grace ran half a mile toward the ocean till she could see the coast line, sure enough about ten miles away there was a ship in distress.

Back to the house she raced, where her horse was waiting. Swiftly mounting, she galloped back to the coast. Hard riding at length brought her to the coast nearest the vessel. Just as she came within view she noticed a boat upturned in the surf. Without hesitation she forced her horse to scramble helter skelter down a precipitous decline. The watchers below forgot their

own peril at this spectacle of rashness. But horse and rider gained the beach galloped into the surf then waded into the second line of roaring breakers. The ship’s crew had attempted to run the hawser; hawser is a nautical term for a thick cable or rope used in mooring or towing a ship. Meanwhile, the Georgette was drifting into the surf at Calgardup Bay, well south of Cape Naturaliste and a just a few kilometres north of the mouth of the Margaret River.

Unfortunately due to a harsh couple of days as an introduction to October, harvest is drawing near a bit quicker than we had hoped. Good to see some people are taking advantage of the time still available bringing in alternators for a preseason service. Regardless of the quality of the crop the alternators will still do roughly the same amount of hours in some pretty testing conditions. Another product worth considering this harvest is camera systems. In previous years we have fitted them into trucks and trailers to reduce the risk of falling while climbing up to check on filling grain and to speed up the loading process. They also save some wear and tear on dodgy knees and backs and can be set up to help backing up trailers. The kits we sell have a quad screen (can take up to four cameras) in colour and are multi volt (12 or 24v). They come with 2 cameras and 2 x 10 metre camera leads. We have the matching cameras in 45, 60 or 90 degree lens in stock and also have a range of camera cables ranging from 3 -15 metres. The cameras are Sony units and have been fitted in airseeder bins etc over the last 5 years and proven to be extremely durable. Come in and see Ross or Joel for a demo, these units also have quick disconnect fittings and could be moved from tractor to truck or header/chaserbin

A HUGE thank you to everyone who braved the elements and ventured outdoors to the Visitor Centre’s Market Day held last Saturday 13th. Although the wind kept us on our toes it was fabulous to see so many stalls set up in the Art Space and lined up along the street, with browsers coming from near and far to see what treasures or bargains they could find.

Congratulations to the raffle winners - Emily & Sophie Parker with the closest guess of 77 in the lolly raffle. Congratulations to Irene McGlinn & Eldie Berdin for winning the Tupperware “Hot Food on the Go” & “Twistable Peeler”. Well done to you all.

Thank you to Missy Clifford for your constant support in the Tupperware raffle.

Thanks to the committee/volunteers who helped to

make the day successful. Your valuable time is very much appreciated. Special THANKS must go to Grant our head chef, Diane for returning “home” to man stalls and raffles and to Mary for your constant help and support.

Thank you very much to LG Meat Supply & LG Caravan Park for supporting the Sausage Sizzle, Kerrie & Tania for allowing us to use the Multi ArtSpace, LG CWA for the delicious scones and of course to all the stall holders for your support. (though I heard some went home with more then they came with!) Finally a MASSIVE thank you to “YOU”, the general community for enabling us to have another fun & successful Market Day.

On behalf of the Visitor Centre committee I thank you all and look forward to seeing you at the 2013 Market Day.

Thank you, Trish Medlen

MARKET DAY

The Lake Grace Market Day for 2012 was off to a windy start. Rather than take the wind on the Visitors Centre’s lawn the market day was relocated right next door in the Lake Grace Multi Artspace. The weather held back for the morning to give stallholders and the crowd a pleasant morning for Market Day on Saturday 13 October. With some stall holders braving the weather on the footpath in front of the Artspace and the other stallholders inside, a total of 14 stalls including the Lake Grace Visitors Centre were taking part in this year’s Market Day. Arts, crafts, jewellery, books, computer games, the new modernised CWA cookbook, woodwork, preserves, children’s toys, The Body Shop and other fabulous items were on sale this year. Also available on the day was a sausage sizzle, Devonshire teas, a guess-the-amount-of-lollies jar and a raffle. “I am thrilled with the number of stalls and the support we get from the Lake Grace community” commented Trish Medlen, the Lake Grace Market Day co-ordinator.

“Most of the stall holders that I talked to did very well and we already have bookings ready for next year.” The Market Day had a good and constant crowd of locals and travellers throughout the morning and organisers are hoping to increase the number of stalls at the future market days.

Toy Library Dates for 2012/2013

Thursday 18 October Thursday 5 February Thursday 1 November Thursday 21 February Thursday 15 November Thursday 7 March Thursday 6 December Thursday 21 March Thursday 20 December Thursday 4 April

Thank you to the Toy Library members who attended last week’s AGM. Firstly, a very big THANKYOU must be made to two of our outgoing committee members; Shelley Stanton, who has been the Lake Grace Toy Library President for the last four years and Vynka Lay, who has been Secretary, chief cataloguer and a member since the rebirth of the toy library in 2006. Both of these ladies have played huge roles in the running of the Toy Library and it’s successful acquisition of over 120 toys. Welcome to incoming President Amy Jones, and to continuing committee members Annie, Marie and Amanda. The Toy Library has been adding to its shelves this year. We thank Amy and Richard Jones for their generous donation and to those community members who supported the Toy Catalogue Fundraising, through which we have purchased new baby and toddler toys and some new ride-ons and construction sets. For anyone unsure of the benefits of joining the Lake Grace Toy Library, let me outline some for you:

For about $1 a week you have access to

some of the best toys on the market, including John Deere ride-ons, We Play trikes and tandem bikes, First Step, Vtech and Little Tikes.

We cater for babies, toddlers and children up

to age 6, which means you don’t have to outlay heaps of money buying age appropriate toys.

Stop your house being overtaken by the toys

by just borrowing and returning …no more clutter and rooms bulging at the seams with toys your children have grown out of.

No strings attached! On average, members

only have 3/4 rosters per year –(and I promise no afternoon tea , umpiring or canteen duties!)

We meet on the first and third Thursday of

the month, before playgroup…so there’s no double trips to town.

Finally, toy library is a fun and casual meeting place. We aim to offer all children in the community the opportunity to develop through play. Annual memberships are now due; $54 – one child, $66 – two children, $72 – three children. We

also offer casual memberships for when the grandkiddies are coming to stay and you need some toys. For anyone who would like to come and see what we have on offer, please call Kristie Stanton for a “no obligation to join” squiz, or come down to the back of the RSL building between 9am -9.45am on the first and third Thursday of each month (see below for dates).

Attracting and retaining Medical Parishioners The Shires of Corrigin, Kondinin, Kulin, Narembeen and Lake Grace have been steadily working towards developing a Wheatbelt General Practice Business Support Service for Medical Practitioners throughout the

nominated area. The aim of doing this to improve the region’s ability to attract and retain private general medical practitioners. This will be achieved by lowering the entry barriers and on-going operating costs for practitioners who will, in return, be required to provide comprehensive general practice services to the community in the Eastern Wheatbelt. It is anticipated that the support service will become operational in April 2013 and its performance and success rate will be watched with interest by other regional areas experiencing difficulties in attracting and retaining medical practitioners. Cat Act The Cat Act is to come into operation in 2013 and its purpose is to provide for the control and management of cats and to promote and encourage responsible ownership of cats.

Lake Grace has joined with Dumbleyung for the purpose of putting a joint application in for grant funding to assist with:

Cat management facilities

Microchip readers, training, cat traps etc

Sterilisation programmes Because of the vast distance between the eastern boundary of Lake Grace and the western parts of Dumbleyung we will establish stand- alone facilities. Strategic Community Plan The Community Planning Consultants presented the Shire of Lake Grace Strategic Community Plan to a Councillor’s workshop on Tuesday 16 October. Data for the plan was compiled from the following sources:

Online and hardcopy survey 105 attendees

School activities 8 classes 170 attendees

Focus groups 14 groups 109 attendees

Appointments and visits 13 attendees

Planning 68 attendees The next step in the process is to formally present the Plan to Council during a formal Council meeting and then release it to the community. Local Laws The Shire has recently commenced the process of reviewing its local laws. Currently there are 21 local laws still in existence and 10 of those will be repealed. Another 10 local laws are under review and will be amended to make any obvious minor changes to upgrade and modernise them. The final local law, being Standing Orders, will be rewritten to conform with the modern terminology of Meeting Procedures Local Law.

The Shire has reviewed the waste management operations to assess value of the existing service to the community. The review of the license conditions and use of the manned tip sites of Lake Grace and Newdegate has identified changes to improve operational efficiency including:

Reducing weekend manned tip site hours to reduce costs

Change tip opening times to provide more efficient work roster

Lake Grace license does not require tip to be manned but fenced when not open to the public

Newdegate tip is required to be manned but will seek to amend the license in future

Lake King & Varley rubbish tips are not required to be manned

New Tip Opening Times

Lake Grace – open Monday & Wednesday (9am 3pm) and Saturday (8am – 12pm)

Newdegate – open Wednesday (9am-3pm) and Saturday (8am – 12pm) The new tip opening times will come into operation from 29

th October 2012.

Bulk Recycling Containers The cost of the bulk recycling containers has also been assessed. The service is inefficient in that cardboard is not compacted prior to pick up and there is also no cost recovery system in place for Shire to recover costs. This service will cease at the end of October 2012 or sooner if the containers are full to capacity. The Shire rents 6 of these containers. The Shire is looking at alternative options to manage recyclables and divert them from landfill. Sites will be established at the Shire rubbish tips for the community to separate recyclables.

The Department of Environment and Conservation collected seed from a variety of species in the Tarin Rock landscape this month as part of the Tarin Rock Priority Landscape Vegetation Programme and the SWCC Ecobridge project. DEC employees from the Manjimup and Pemberton offices travelled to the wheatbelt to assist Tarin Rock Project Officer Bree Phillips in undertaking the work.

Seed was collected from over 50 species including Eucalypts, Hakeas and Melaleucas and a variety of others. Many species required high pruning poles up to 6m in length to reach seed in the canopy, while collection of seed from some of the prickly Hakeas and Banksias proved to be treacherous.

The seed, currently being processed, will be sent to nurseries to be cultivated for revegetation of private property in the Tarin Rock Landscape in 2013.

The project involves revegetation of priority areas by cost-share agreement with the landholders to create corridors between and buffer remnant vegetation. Funding also exists for fencing priority remnant vegetation in the area.

Interested landholders from the Tarin Rock area should contact Bree Phillips in the DEC Katanning Work Centre on 9881 9253 or 0447 955 080.

Women have always been told to check their breasts for lumps – but it’s not just lumps women should be looking for.

Knowing what is normal for you and your body is the best way of noticing when something is different.

So in addition to examining your breasts for lumps, you also be on the lookout for;

Lumpiness or thickening of the breast

Changes in breast skin (puckering, dimpling or

rash)

Persistent or unusual pain

A change in breast shape

Change in size

Nipple discharge or a change in shape

Go and see your doctor if you have had any of these symptoms for more than 4 weeks – they would rather see you earlier than later so don’t put it off.

It’s important to act on any unusual symptoms as soon as possible as the earlier breast cancer is found the greater the chance of successful

treatment. If breast cancer is found early and is limited to the breast, 98% of patients will be alive five years after diagnosis.

Breast cancer is the most common invasive cancer in women after non-melanoma skin cancer and the second most common cause of cancer death after lung cancer.

Screening for breast cancer involves a mammogram. Women aged 50 – 69 are automatically invited to have a free mammogram with Breastscreen WA every two years. Women who are 40-49 or over 70 are also eligible to attend - just phone 13 20 50 to make an appointment.

Check out www.findcancerearly.com.au for more information about cancer signs and symptoms, what to do, telling your doctor and why early detection is important. Contact Details: Lisa Barr, Find Cancer Early Project Officer (Narrogin) 0428 772 213, [email protected]

Enthusiastic Skaters Learn New Tricks (Cont.) found skill, the skaters were not going to be stopped. As it started to warm up, a suggestion of a drink break was welcomed by everyone. During the break, the two coaches James and Daniel used the whole skate park to perform some of their tricks and showed their expertise.

With new found enthusiasm the young skaters found their skate boards, scooters and protective gear and got back onto the skate park equipment. Trying different parts of the equipment was on the mind of all these young skaters, as well as learning new tricks from their coaches.

The reluctant young skaters with the help of their coaches learned the correct feet placement and stance on a board and they were able to start using the skate park equipment. Honing their skills and confidence on the skateboard will be part of the future for some bright new skaters. Those who already knew a bit about skateboarding were able to further develop their skills. Not only were they learning new skills, these ambitious skaters were helping the younger skaters.

The Forum delves into how “Visitorism” can be another string to our bow - building capacity and creating potential to grow the

population.

Richard and Amy opened Caffe Arjo to provide a modern, fresh meeting place for people to enjoy tasty food and good coffee. Even though it is often quiet in the café after 2.30. Caffe Arjo insist on staying open till 5pm, and on Saturdays so that people can continue to meet up once work and school are over For students this could be their first café experience. “Local support has been overwhelming”. said Amy. The couple agree the most rewarding part of running a café is witnessing people meeting up and having a good catch up. “That’s when you know all the hard work is worth while”. Meet the staff Amber McPherson – Local girl Amber is Arjo’s longest full time employee, starting with Arjo’s in January 2011. Amber has grown up in Lake Grace and has the advantage of knowing most people. Ever ready with a smile Amber’s passion for the hospitality industry is evident. As she speaks about how much she enjoys every aspect of the hospitality industry from cooking to customer service you are left in no doubt, Amber loves her job! With an infectious giggle Amber tells me “I see some regulars come in the door, by the time they get to the till

I have their order ready for them”. Amber has done some travelling through the Eastern States but is under no illusion that Lake Grace is a good place to live. Sam O’Malley – Sam comes from Canterbury in England. He studied journalism and worked on the local paper in Canterbury. He became a sports coach, coaching soccer with young people up to the age of 14. Sam was bitten by the travel bug, like many young English folk the decision to get a working holiday visa and come to Australia was an easy one. After spending time on the east coast, mainly in Melbourne, he decided to seek work in WA. Sam has been in Lake Grace seven weeks he loves the friendly locals especially the fact that everyone in this town waves to each other. He plans to spend time in Malaysia next year. Eva Guo – Eva comes from Kaohsiung in the south of Taiwan. She graduated from the University of Cheng Chi majoring in International Trade. Eva worked for a year as a Personal Assistant helping setting up a branch of a Singaporean company in Taiwan. Eva has been in Australia for about 6 weeks, she feels the best way to learn about the life style and the language is by working in the country.

CHECKLIST – PREPARING YOUR PROPERTY

The majority of houses can survive most bushfires with preparation and planning. There are many ways that you can improve the chance of your property surviving a bushfire even if you aren’t there to defend it. Use this checklist as a guide to preparing your home.

Refer to FESA’s Prepare. Act. Survive. Your Guide to Preparing for and Surviving the Bushfire Season and the Homeowners Bush Fire Survival Manual available at: www.fesa.wa.gov.au

The information contained in this publication is provided by the Fire and Emergency Services Authority of Western Australia (FESA) voluntarily as a public service. This resource has been prepared in good faith and is derived from sources believed to be reliable and accurate at the time of publication. Nevertheless, the reliability and accuracy of the information cannot be guaranteed and FESA expressly disclaims liability for any act or omission done or not done in reliance on the information and for any consequences, whether direct or indirect, arising from such an act or omission. This publication is intended to be a guide only and readers should obtain their own independent advice and make their own necessary enquiries.

STARVE THE FIRE Clear around your home so that embers will have less chance to start a fire when they hit the ground. This will also help reduce the damage caused by the fire.

Cut long grass and dense scrub.

Regularly rake up leaf litter and twigs under trees.

Prune lower tree branches (up to two metres off the ground) to stop a ground fire spreading into the canopy of trees.

Remove shrubs and small trees under and between larger trees.

Clear vegetation along the boundary of your property to create a firebreak. Make sure you meet your local government’s fire break requirements.

Keep roof gutters and valleys clear of leaves and bark. MAKE A SAFETY ZONE Within the safety zone:

Create a 20 metre circle of safety around your home and other buildings. This area needs to be cleared of all rubbish, long dry grass, bark and material that may catch fire.

Create and maintain a minimum two metre gap between your house and tree branches.

If possible, plan your garden so that your vegetable garden, lawn, pool or patio is on the side of the house likely to face a fire (where the bush is).

FILL THE GAPS Houses usually catch fire when embers get into the roof space, a wall cavity, on to ledges or under the house. Prevent sparks from entering your house by blocking all the gaps.

Block any gaps under floor spaces, in the roof space, under eaves, external vents, skylights, chimneys and wall cladding.

Place metal fly wire mesh on all windows, vents and evaporative air conditioners to keep sparks and embers out.

FIX THE FIRE TRAPS

Do not pile wood against or near the house. Remove any timber, rubbish and old junk lying around. Move all fuel containers into a shed away from your house and have a firebreak around it. Keep gas cylinders on the side of the house furthest away from the likely direction of a fire (where the bush is). Ensure the pressure relief valve is directed away from the house. Store gas cylinders upright and secure them with a metal chain to a secure, non-combustible post to prevent cylinders from falling over.

PROTECT YOUR ASSET

Have a sufficient independent water supply of at least 20,000 litres and a petrol, diesel or a generator powered pump capable of pumping 400 litres per minute.

Check that your home and contents insurance cover is adequate. Take into consideration renovations, fixtures and additions such as swimming pools, sheds, gazebos, luxury fittings or new appliances.

As an integral part of WDC’s work in developing tourism opportunities, the Commission has organised Capacity Building forum presentations in five Shires of the Eastern Wheatbelt.

All business operators and everyone connected with tourism/visitorism - existing or potential - are being invited to attend to see for themselves what are their prospects and how the Wheatbelt is now looking in the eyes of outside visitors wanting to come here to experience this way of life.

Jurek Leon from Terrific Trading will lead the first wave of presentations, which will occur in Wyalkatchem, Southern Cross, Kulin, Lake Grace and Corrigin, starting Tuesday 23

rd October.

Response to the five forums will be closely monitored, specifically to gauge the best means of generating interest and meeting the needs of Eastern Wheatbelt communities so, they can be well-supported in collaboratively attracting visitors now and well into the future.

Already there has been outstanding keenness coming from towns where the first-wave forums are being held.

“Country towns grow and businesses increase throughout the world, wherever communities are involved in bringing visitors to their towns”, said Melissa Green, President Wyalkatchem Business Group.

“It has been demonstrated over and over that tourism is one of the best all-round means of bringing revenue into the local economy from outside”, she said.

Shire of Yilgarn’s CEO, Viviene Piccoli, added: “Council are enthusiastic about promoting the Shire of Yilgarn as a tourist destination, so people from all over the world can come to our patch of paradise and enjoy the many tourist attractions and stay for a while.

“The District is famous for exporting gold and iron ore, however, having visitors come and stay here will be like

gold coming to us.”

And in Corrigin, Mike Lynch, the new Eastern Wheatbelt Small Business Centre Manager said, “Every day there are vehicles full of tourists driving into our town and Corrigin is extremely lucky to have the opportunity of encouraging those visitors to stop over and experience a day or so of the wonderful country life that is ours all the time.”

“Being on one of the main roads between Perth and Wave Rock is an enormous gift to the businesses and retail outlets in this Shire, plus anyone interested in setting up farm-stay or B&Bs.

“Hyden is a shining example of just how alluring we are and of what happens when we value our visitors.” he added.

The itinerary for the presentations is:

We were one of the first tournaments on the calendar so all participants were keen and enthusiastic about tennis! The weather for the tournament was a very pleasant day with the wind not venturing until later in the day. There was a range of participants from Kulin, Kukerin, Lake Grace, Dumbleyung and Tarin Rock. There was lots of competition in all age groups with fantastic tennis skills being displayed. Lots of entries were taken for the 11 years and under age group, especially the boys. The day was modified slightly to allow the boys in this age group to pair up and play against the mixed group. It was a great opportunity for more tennis and greater participation. st of October at home against Dumbleyung.

Sunday Pennants Last week we had a bye. This week we played Dudinin in what can be best described as appalling conditions, with the wind and heat making tennis a very undesirable option for the day! We manage to get 12 sets and were competitive for the day. We all certainly worked hard for our beverages! The next pennant match will be the 4

th of November at Tarin Rock against

Lake Grace. Newdegate are hosting a men’s doubles day this Friday the 26

th so make sure you all support

this!

Social Tennis Kevin Naisbitt is the social captain and keeps us all informed via email with events. Each Friday night at approximately 5.30ish tennis is on with a BBQ to follow. Bring a salad to share and your own meat. Kevin is keen to get us all challenging each other in singles to make us work for our spot on the ladder!!

Regional Zone Selection A zone selection day was recently held in Katanning to select representatives for the Great Southern Zone. Congratulations to Emma Naisbitt, Brad O’Neill, Anna Hunt and Codie Ditchburn who were selected to represent the Great Southern Zone. The Regional competitions will be held in November. The girls will play in Busselton between the 4-6

th of November for the

Foundation Cup and the boys will play between the 7th-

9th November for the Darcy Slater Cup. We wish them

well. Sharon Robinson

Tarin Rock Tennis Club Notes

During the first week of the holidays Tarin Rock hosted coaching with Keith O’Brien from Wickepin. There was a fantastic group of children from Lake Grace, Tarin Rock and Kukerin who attended. Keith had all

participants on the move and brushing up on their tennis skills. Parents and children alike enjoyed the tennis, food and

socializing over the two days. Thanks to Theresa Naisbitt and Linda Hunt for organizing the sessions. Also thanks to Keith O’Brien who keeps the groups focused and on task with his excellent teaching manner.

On Saturday we played our Club Championship Pairs. It was a really good day for playing bowls with the sun shining and the wind not blowing. The turn out was really good. There were lots and lots of us. The winners of the Pairs for the Ladies are Michelle Lay and Heather Bell. The winners of the Pairs for the Men are Geoff Duckworth and Geoff Sabourne. Congratulations to them all. Our pennant games start on Saturday 27

th October and

we have a home game against Kulin. Could everyone

be there by 1.00pm. The teams are on the notice board in the club. On Sunday the 28

th of October we start Scroungers,

everyone is very welcome; if you don’t have any bowls there are plenty of spare ones. Casual dress. Names to be in by 9.30am and the games start at 10.00am.

Until next time, keep smiling. Sonya McSwain
