Social Commitment and sensitizing students to social issues is an integral part of the
vision of the College. In keeping with the vision and mission of the College, the extension
services at Holy Cross focus on the core values and ethos of the College.
I. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE EXTENSION POLICY:
1. To make students realise and accomplish their Students Social Responsibility (SSR),
attain Departmental Social Responsibility (DSR)and synergise the two to accomplish
Institutional Social Responsibility (ISR)
2. The college intends to awaken Social Consciousness and prepare students as socially
responsible young Women leaders who would respond to the needs of the society.
II. SCOPE OF THE EXTENSION POLICY:
The extension and outreach activities at HCC will:
x Provide opportunities for students to work together with students in campus and in
the community.
x Help students learn to negotiate, communicate and manage conflict.
x Sensitize students on social issues and challenges faced by the lesser privileged
sections of the society.
x Develop critical thinking, time management and leadership skills.
x make students gain more self-confidence, autonomy, and appreciation of others
through working outside the college campus
x Facilitate students work with diversified social groups of people which in turn
would help them become good leaders and well-mannered citizens.
x Enable students participate in programs for Psycho-Somatic-Sanctity of the body
among persons and society.
In order to fulfil the aforesaid aims and objectives, Holy Cross College (Autonomous)
Tiruchirappalli, has undertaken innovative and useful ongoing extension and outreach activities
namely:
x RESCAPES
x SERVICE ORIENTED COURSES [SOC]
x OTHERS
Students participation in RESCAPES and SOC is mandatory for the award of the UG degree.
RESCAPES
Rural Enrichment through Students Community Action and Participation for
Environmental Sustainability (RESCAPES), is a well-structured program, integrated into the
UG curriculum (Part V), where 23 villages in the neighborhood have been adopted for enriching
the rural community through student’s action and participation. The student acquires knowledge
and develops skills through the Skill Based Elective Paper which she studies in the first semester.
Each student should have completed 32 hours (I UG- 8hrs; II UG-16 hrs; III UG- 8 hrs) in the
adopted villages during the 3 academic years, which is evaluated for one credit at the end of the
III year. The Post Graduate students spend 16 hours for the extension and outreach services in
the urban slum areas.
SERVICE ORIENTED COURSES (SOC)
All I UG and II UG students are members of any one of the fifteen service oriented
courses namely, AICUF, Come Alive, Consumer Club, Financial Literacy Club, EXNORA,
NCC, NSS, Red Ribbon Club, ROTARACT, Gender Champion Club, Youth Red Cross, Leo
Club, Disaster Management Club, Youth against Drugs and Yuva Club. Service oriented Course
is a part of the curriculum representing PART VI with 1 credit awarded on successful completion
of four semesters of active participation.
OTHERS:
There exists a number of additional voluntary extension and outreach services at HCC.
Any student of the college can enroll as members of these clubs and render her service.
