In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
Our product follows the basic conventions of British Social Realism films including a council estate setting, unknown actors, realistic lighting and a regional dialect
We felt it best to stick to these conventions as they are the key aspects of the genre and wouldn’t have been as effective if they were not followed. We followed the basic macro view of the genre by including someone from the lower classes and their life revolving around the social issues related to the location and time
We also followed the conventions and codes by paying close attention to the micro features of our video. Cheap clothing was worn including hoodies and tracksuit bottoms for costumes. These are a staple of the genre, as the people represented in these films usually wear them and lack the money to be able to dress in more smarter attire
Another micro feature we payed attention to was the use of props. We use props we felt our target audience could identify with in their daily lives such as Tesco shopping bags and Blackberry phones
The issue of suicide and to a lesser extent, domestic abuse, is represented in our product. These issues are found to have a higher rate of occurrence in the lower classes shown in the film. Our target audience of teenagers/young adults can relate to the main character’s issues as they are of a similar age and can therefore relate and sympathise with her. Therefore we are following the conventions of British Realism films in showing an issue that that affects the general public and specifically, those suffered by the lower classes
