CONVENTIONS

There are a number of conventions which I researched before I began to construct my trailer, magazine cover and poster.

This allowed me to develop a further understanding of conventions and meant I could investigate different ways to challenge and conform to conventions effectively.

Within the poster I have created I used a number of conventions such as a large title, in a bold font. By using this convention it allows my potential consumers to see the name of the film straight away and persuade them to go and see the full theatrical film.

This convention is used in a number of other film posters allowing the poster to be executed effectively to the audience to ensure the film is promoted successfully.

I have developed this convention further by also putting the titles in capitals, meaning it can be read even more clearly.

In this shot from my trailer (the top one) a mysterious mise-en-scene is established, done by the use of lighting (chiaroscuro) this conforms to conventions in the film noir genre as it contributes to the suspense. By not showing where the car is heading also conforms to the narrative of trailers, as the audience don’t expect the whole story to be revealed.

In this shot my male protagonist is captured with a serious expression on his face, similarly to Ryan Gosling in Drive.

By capturing this expression, the seriousness of the film noir genre along with an enigma code is continued, to mystify the viewer, and ultimately persuade them to come and watch the full theatrical film.

In the shot on the right; the girl is shown as dead. This contrasts to the film noir ideology that the female lead, known as the femme fatale, is likely to be the most dangerous character in the plot, and in fact be the murderer themselves.

This scene is also contrasting to typical shots of dead characters as due to the resources available, as well as the actress, I found it tricky to emphasize that she was dead. The effect could have been created better if I had used lower lighting in the scene to create more shadows, pale makeup and blood to make the shot more realistic, and a close-up of the weapon used to kill her.

In contrast to the shot, here is a more brutal representation of a dead woman, from the film memento.

Due to my film being an independent; it would be unsuitable to use some of the conventions, such as the use of my actors names as star vehicles. This technique works effectively for other film producers as they may be targeting a larger mass market, where names of actors, even if they aren't well established may work well as a selling point. I decided to challenge this convention as

I also followed a number of other poster conventions such as the use of a credit block,

On my magazine cover, the convention of placing the characters head over the title, is challenged. This is due to the images I had available, as if I carried out a reshoot, it is like the image would end up looking very different to the image used on my poster.

I have challenged the convention by also using an almost extreme close-up of the character, meaning that the effect created is more intense.
