In what ways does my work challenge or develop the forms and conventions of real media products? For this question I am going to compare real music videos and ancillary products with my work so that there is an obvious view of how my work has challenged and developed the forms and conventions of media texts. The real products I will be using to demonstrate my work are: The original music video to ‘Girls’ by The 1975; ‘Little Monster’ by Royal Blood and ‘Fancy’ by Iggy Azalea. I have decided to compare my work with these songs as one of them is the original of the song I have chosen, another is of the rock genre and the last one is of the pop genre –All of which will include forms and conventions that are and should typically be used in my alternative music video. One of the conventions that I have used, taken from Little Monster, Is the idea of the black and white colour theme. I feel that although the song is of the rock genre, it reflects the indie aspect of my video. Therefore I have decided to use this idea in my work. Here you can see how I have used I used this convention because I needed to create the correct atmosphere for my band, song and music video. Although this colour scheme was effective, I developed the convention used by adding elements of colour to my video to reflect the pop aspect to my genre. This is not commonly used in alternative music videos; however I felt that by joining the two genres together through the colour scheme worked effectively for my chosen song. Here you can see that colour has been used in ‘Fancy’ and how I have adapted colour to feature within my work:

  • In what ways does my work challenge or develop the forms and conventions of real media products?

For this question I am going to compare real music videos and ancillary products with my work so that there is an obvious view of how my work has challenged and developed the forms and

conventions of media texts. The real products I will be using to demonstrate my work are: The original music video to Girls by The 1975; Little Monster by Royal Blood and Fancy by Iggy Azalea. I have decided to compare my work with these songs as one of them is the original of the

song I have chosen, another is of the rock genre and the last one is of the pop genre All of which will include forms and conventions that are and should typically be used in my alternative music video.

One of the conventions that I have used, taken from Little Monster, Is the idea of the black and

white colour theme. I feel that although the song is of the rock genre, it reflects the indie aspect of my video. Therefore I have decided to use this idea in my work. Here you can see how I have used I used this convention because I needed to create the correct atmosphere for my band, song and

    music video.

Although this colour scheme was effective, I developed the convention used by adding elements of colour to my video to reflect the pop aspect to my genre. This is not commonly used in alternative music videos; however I felt that by joining the two genres together through the colour scheme

worked effectively for my chosen song. Here you can see that colour has been used in Fancy and how I have adapted colour to feature within my work:

  • Although the colour acts as me using typical media convention, I have also used stereotypical mise en scene for my band and the characters of the narrative. The image was influenced by The 1975s

clothing in the original music video for my song. The people I have used in my video are all wearing clothing of Dark colours and jeans a top - linking to the indie theme, or miss-matched clothing to reflect the overall alternative genre/look. Here you can see how I have used and changed the ideas

of the media conventions used in real texts:

In terms Andrew Goodwins theory, I have created a standard music video with some narrative and

some performance elements. I have used my 'singer' within the narrative element of my music video who is displayed through my use of close ups which leads my artist acting as a commercial exhibitionist, promoting the band. This is good for the producers also. The narrative part to the video

also has lyric and visual cohesion as the narrative is based on what they are sing. This also promotes the songs message.

Finally I have also challenged the traditional conventions of indie artist/videos, as traditionally the bands do not promote their identity in their music video; they focus on promoting the message of

the song and their music in general. I have decided to apply the bands logo to my music video to promote the bands identity and link the video to my ancillary products. Although this is not commonly used, I feel that it links in well with the additional colours I have used- representing the

    pop aspect to the genre.

  • In terms of my ancillary products I have used typical forms and conventions as well as challenging them too. For example, I have ensured to include typical conventions such as my use of placing the

production companies on to both the digipak and the advert, creating a link between the two and ensuring that the audience know who made and where to find the album that is being presented/ advertised to them. I have also ensured that I have included a web link to the advert to reinforce this

idea of the audience being able to access information about the product and also information on what the album includes of is shown in a label on the front cover of the digipak. This is a common feature, which would be used to entice the audience to buy it through a sticker.

Another way in which I have linked my ancillary products my music video is by the colours used. I have kept the colour theme used in the music video within my ancillary products which keeps the genre of the artist evident and clear to the audience. This is a typical convention of adverts and

digipaks as they have the purpose to me recognised and promote the music video, album and artist. I have also tried to keep the genre conventions or both indie and pop by including an image on the inside cover of the digipak. This is common in indie albums as they tend not to display themselves

upfront, however it does challenge the conventions of a pop- artist as they tend to have the artist present on the cover. Despite of this, I feel that by the additional colour helps to represent the alternative genre-This can be seen above.

Although my ancillary products have used some typical conventions of adverts and digipaks, my

advert has challenged the idea that adverts presents the bands logo in an obvious way whereas, I have layered the logo over the image that I used for my advert and then used filters to fade it. This made it more subtle but added a good effect to the product as it was interesting to see when you

finally notice it. This is subtle outlook on displaying the logo was my decision to keep the convention of the indie genre not promoting themselves in an obvious way and by displaying the logo like this, I feel in reinforces the typical convention of the genre but not adverts.

I feel that my ancillary products link well with my music video and each other and has used and

developed typical forms and conventions or existing products out there.
