Over the year we had both an ancillary and main task to complete. Within the ancillary task we produced a film magazine and poster. Within the main task we produced a film trailer. When producing these products we have researched other real media products to collect the key conventions of which are required to form the final piece for our target audience to want it. As a producer I believe in Stuart Hulls theory, he believed that a producer encodes their product which then when it is released the audience will decode the product which then means that the meaning that was intended from the producers prospective has changed as the audiences opinion will be different as they might view different aspects of the product. This relates to us as we use common conventions throughout our work, this will allow the audience to identify a relationship between other real media products. We also challenge our work with a variety of conventions so that we could be able to have a Unique Selling Point, this will allow us to broaden our audience. When we created the magazine we have followed key conventional elements to fit within the genre. Here is the magazine to show you:

The title of the magazine use common conventions as they compare to existing media products such as an independent magazine called Sight & Sound. They both consist with the same similar font as they both are san-serif fonts. These are plain which relates to the genre, we chose to use sans-serif font as it is an easier font for the audience to read. But however we challenged the font overall of the magazine so that we could be able to be unique.Title

We used an grey background for our magazine as we believed that the background could allow the texts to stand out. From our research we found out that mainstream magazines commonly have a grey background, this then inspired me to do so in my work, which challenging independent magazines conventions

We challenged the common conventions within an independent magazine as we used a Qr Code these are usually used within more of an mainstream magazine, comparing to Sight & Sound they just had a normal barcode. This shows to the audience that we are more of an up brand independent magazine.

Overall our magazine has a common independent layout as we believed that we should stick to expirations of independent magazine conventions.Through the process of producing the magazine we have established that we have developed forms of what our target audience want, our target audience are social realism film viewers. The consumption of media is also is important in a person's production of media. As with all my products such as my film magazine, I was required and benefited from the analysis and viewing of current products that allowed me to broaden my knowledge andawarenessof current conventions, the existing magazines that I analysed were both Filmmaker and Sight & Sound magazines, they are both independent magazines. To gain knowledge of underpinning the genre I researched about it through technologies such as Google and YouTube, which I extracted information that are relevant to my task. From this I gained knowledge on common features within film magazines, to then carry this out to produce my own realistic looking film magazine. As well as aiding my direction, research and planning helped me consider the possibilities of media products and not be scared to make things my own, and create limits to my creativity such as on my magazine cover I added paint brush strokes for the background of my subtitles, to mimic the bold layouts of current magazines and interpret the bold aspects in my own way. When analysing the existing magazines I saw a frequent usage of serif fonts, this then allowed me to create my own serif font using a website called www.dafonts.com. From looking at this website I could have access with thousands of different fonts which I could use in my magazine. I chose to stick with a serif font as I want appeal to my target audience. Also when looking at these magazines I looked out for the mastheads, sales lines, fonts and colour palette. We challenged other independent film magazines conventions as we used bold colours. We recognised from our research that common independent magazines have a greyscale and two tone colour palette, I discovered this from the magazine Filmmaker.

Our film poster challenges social realism conventions in comparison to others. Photoshop to bring theelements of my poster together in a fast and simple manner. When forminginitialdrafts of my work I was very unsure how my products should look, and used thetechnologyto play around with ideas, sometimes even making mistakes that fuelled inspiration. Knowing which ones to keep.As with no clear plan the technology still allowed me to becreative and produce a professional productthroughtrial and error. This is how my first draft and final products looked so different as the possibilities of Photoshop meant I could change every aspect I wanted to, such as changing colours and exposure of images, this will give me the best outcome as I could manipulate the font until I believe that it is ready.

In comparison to my poster, other social realism posters are plain with one background and arent shown a clear narrative to the audience. I believe that Stuart Hulls theory applies to the posters as the audience decode the posters mise en scene. As the producer of my poster I encoded the narrative through the images, such as the Olympic stadium, displays that the film is about the Olympics, the image on the top left represents friendship, the bottom right shows a separation of the friendship because the girl shown, i also chose the costumes on purpose as it shows the characters personality, I also done this through the facial expressions of the characters as the character Lorenzos facial expression on the bottom right shows the anger and looks like a stereotype of a criminal. The audience could decode this differently compared to what I tried to present.Trailer The theorists Branston and Stafford as they believed that stereotypes are widely circulated ideas or assumptions about particular groups. This relates to our film as we used a common stereotype of young black males being involved within gangs and drugs. This is illustrated through the character Lorenzo, Lorenzo is a black teenager that is influenced into gang culture, and this is a stereotype as the media presents the urban culture to be criminals. We also used this stereotype through the mise en scene e.g. costume and settings. Lorenzo was wearing an all black hoodie which the media disagrees with as they believe that hoodies are used for criminal activities, this is false stereotypes that the media publishes. The settings of the scenes that the film is based in, is estates, this shows to the audience the lifestyle that the characters are living in, which are classified as working class. We challenged the common conventions of social realism films compared to real media products through the narrative, as our film is a hybrid of sport, which is not commonly shown as a social realism film.

With our film trailer we also used theediting software, Magix Movie Edit Pro, this is editing software, and from using this software I could be able to bring together all my shots. This technology provided us with broad possibilities for the development of our work. It especially helped us become more creative, as when exploring the tools available we discovered different effects we could apply to shots so that we could be able to go beyond the basic conventions of social realism film trailers. Therefore the technology itself provided some of our ideas and made our video more complex and creative then we even imagined. Effects and tools we were able to apply to our work were things such as filters to change the appearance of shots, change the different timing of our shots to make our trailer fit into the film timing that we wanted, we adjusted the timing of certain shots, which we made one shot to fast forward so that the shot frame could be increased and look more effective and we added zoom to maintain interest. This allowed us to be able to make fast past cut scenes which is common convention, that is presented in social realism film trailers, this so that the trailer doesnt reveal too much of the narrative to the audience and so that it could build suspense as it switches between the scenes. This software meant that even if the initial shots hadn't quite captured what we hoped or lived up to our expectations we could tweak and change them to transform them to something that worked. This a brilliant way of working as media student as I could be able to adjust any changes that need to be done at any time as it is saved on computer, this allows the consumers to become producers. This also relates to those that are armatures at using software like this, as they could gain their knowledge by exploring the software and watching video tutorials online to explain the steps of using it. This is why I improved upon my skills when producing the final product. In comparison to existing media products such as Adulthood and Shifty, they all have same elements that social realism conventions carry through the camera angles and fast paste editing.
