PRODUCE: Th e production orientated part of the project embodies the simple shape of a mas-sive cube, reveiling with its purity the soft geography of the toscan wineyard. Th is choice for a platonic shape is not only referring to landart but its compactness also pragmaticaly allows to save land and for effi cient wine production as it is based on a gravitational system. We use the topography to bring up the grappes, and then each step of winemaking is being hosted on a diff erent level, so we only use gravity to pass the wine from one to the next.
VISIT: Th e project emphasizes for the visitor the complex relation between agricultural exploitation and landscape. Th e building is based on a dialectic between intro-verted spaces needed for winemaking, forming a production mass, and, inside of this mass, dug-out extraverted spaces for visitors, such as restaurant, tasting rooms, exhibition spaces... Th e visitor will follow his curiosity, looking at the machinery needed for winemaking with a fragmented perception of the surrounding lanscape, in the respect of the wine-making tradition.
HOST: Rather than exposing the resort facilities, we chose have the production program as an emergence, inverting the regular scheme to show the usually secret part of the process. Our proposal is then for an hotel and a spa to inhabit the ground, usings a series of faults to bring natural light. Th is way, hidden underneath the land, they will represent the notion of soil, a characteristic of each wine. It will be a composition of telluric spaces, conceived to stage the nature of the soil.
CONSTRUCTION: Th e project uses every aspect of concrete as a material, its structural qualities as well as its aesthetical ones. Th e fl oorings and the dug-out spaces are carried by an almost blind massive façade, helped by three load-bearing technical cores (also used for fl uids). Retaining walls in concrete will be used to prepare the ground for the resort. Th is concrete will be based on local ingredients so that its minerality will insure the integration in the lanscape. Its texture will remind in some part of the building of exposed rocks after excavation.
