The nation-wide search at- tracted 127 nominations from 55 different organizations from every province and territory except Prince Edward Island. Sudbury accounted for 22 of those nominations -with 12 originating from Inco. Candidates had to meet the following criteria: Work in a mining-related job that did not exist five to 10 years ago. Work in Canada for a mining company, union, sup- plier/contractor, association, consulting firm, government, academia or other type of or- ganization related to mining. Blasthole drilling con- ducted earlier this year on the mine's 4350 level yielded re- sults previously unheard of in the industry. Of 16 holes, each 135 feet long, one was within three feet of its plotted break- through point, two were within two feet and the re- mainder broke through within a foot to six inches of target - an amazing 0.3 per cent deviation. "That kind of accuracy is unbelievable," said mine fore- man Ed Gravelle. "In the past, it wasn't unusual for drill holes to be off as much as 10 feet. More accurate holes result in less secondary blasting, bet- ter fragmentation and im- proved geological control of the ore." It is also saving the. com- pany a considerable amount of cash by eliminating the need to re-drill for deviations deemed too great. Smaller muck fragments and fewer secondary blasts save money on blasting pow- der and have enabled the mine to expand its traditional 10 foot by 10 foot drill pattern to 10 x 11, 10 x 12 and even- tually 12 x 12. them after the trio appeared in the On-tario Division's latest ad staring backat readers from a shiny stainless steeltoaster.

The ad, produced here in Sudburyby the audio-visual component ofPublic Affairs, debuted in the Sud-bury Star's souvenir'progress editign'entitled Sudbury Region '96 earlier thisyear.

"It certainly seems to have beenwell read," said Lorri, an engi-neer-in-training who joinedInco in 1994. "Everybody hasnoticed it and I'm gettingteased big-time as the'toasterqueen'.

"I think the ad was a verygood idea," she said. "It'shard to find something ofstainless steel on which youcan easily superimpose a pictureof employees. But a toaster is soobvious and it's something everyonecan relate to."

Electroless nickel grows

Electroless nickel platinggrew about five per cent peryear between 1975 and 1995in the United States. Electrolessnickel has increased the de-mand for high-purity nickelsulfate. EN grades of nickelsulfate are often made fromInco nickel powders that arevery pure and easily dissolved.

Electric vehicle coming

General Motors will be thefirst major automaker to mar-ket an electric vehicle in theU.S. The two-seater to be soldthis fall in Los Angeles, SanDiego, Phoenix and Tucsonwill be priced in the mid-$30,000 range. Powered by alead-acid battery it will needrecharging every 90 miles. Themarketing of an electric vehi-cle by GM should help definedemand and may acceleratethe search for improved bat-teries. If nickel batteries areapplied, then demand fornickel plating and powders willincrease.

Rolling mill renovations

Construction of a 6,680square foot hallway-type struc-ture to connect buildings atthe Inco Alloys Elkhart Roll-ing Mill in Elkhart, Indianawill reduce materials handlingdelays and increase workerefficiency. The connectingstructure became necessary toaddress storage concernsbrought on by a highly suc-cessful and profitable toll con-version business. The facilityis helping Inco Alloys increaseits business by cold rolling,bright annealing and slittingproducts for other alloy andmetal manufacturers.

Wire plant acquired

Inco Alloys is expandingits manufacturing of highnickel alloy products beyondits Hereford , U.K. plant intoother European and Asianmarkets . In December, IncoAlloys acquired majority own-ership of Rescal , S.A., a majorsupplier of electrical resistancealloy wire and ribbon prod-ucts. Rescal, located in Epone,France, about 19 miles west ofParis, will keep its own nameand will operate under its ex-isting management . The ac-quisition allows Inco Alloysto expand into the fine wireindustry through a companythat's already well -establishedin that market.

P.T. Inco earnings

P.T. International NickelIndonesia (P.T. Inco) an-nounced earnings of $21.4million (U.S.) for the firstquar-ter of 1996, compared with$25.8 million for the first quar-ter of 1995. The decrease innet earnings, relative to thecorresponding 1995 periodreflects lower nickel price re-alizations.

Birchtree project deepens

One hundred feet downand 710 feet to go - that's thestatus of the Birchtree MineDeepening Project in theManitoba Division. The deep-

ening has included rehabili-tation of about 450 feet ofexisting shaft , removal ofwater and slimes and the driv-ing of about 810 feet of drifton the 3450 level.

External clients sought

IncoTest, a new businessdivision of Inco Alloys Inter-national, is using existing re-sources at the Huntingtonplant to offer commercial test-ing to the world and generateadded revenues. Inco Alloysis IncoTest's number one cus-tomer and will remain thefirst priority. Additional busi-ness will be brought in byIncoTest to fill the gaps whenits own mill production is notfilling testing capacity.

Patti Reynolds

Patti is a 20-year Inco vet-eran who has recently turnedher talents to waste manage-ment. Using the principles ofreduce, re-use and recycle, sheconducts waste audits and cre-ates waste reduction workplans for all areas of the Sud-bury operations.

News of her selectionevoked strong feelings of pridein the Division's dedicatedwaste watcher.

"It feels great," said anelated Patti. "It's definitely asurprise but I think it's fabu-lous. The nomination itself wasgreat but I never imagined Iwould win. It makes me feelgood to be recognized for thework I'm doing.

"Here in the Ontario Divi-sion we generate a lot of wasteand that amount can be re-duced or diverted from landfillsthrough proper re-use and re-cycling. If Inco is recycling ithas a positive spin-off effecton the community because an

employee who recycles at workis probably recycling at home.

"The mining industry isbecoming increasingly sensi-tive towaste management con-cerns - as is the public. It's.become a noticeable issue thatrequires addressing . By doingso, Inco is helping the commu-nity as well as itself."

Trevor Rickwood

With just two years underhis belt , Trevor is a new face atInco as well as a new face inmining.

An ergonomist with a de-gree in kinesiology, he con-ducts the scientific study of thephysical interaction betweenworkers and work - takinginto account the work envi-ronment , tools and tasks in-volved in a person 's everydayjob.

"When people think of min-ing today , high technologyand automated machinerycome to mind ," said Trevor."But it 's the people in themines, mills, refineries andsmelters who are the heart-beat of the industry.

"Just like machinery willbreak down if mistreated, sotoo can the human body. Bydesigning jobs to fit humancapabilities , we enhance oursafety, health and productiv-

Joseph 'Chico' Villeneuve

A 27-year Inco veteran andthe first man in the world tooperate a tele-remotescooptram, Chico is nostranger to the spotlight.

Two yearf abo Chico oper-ated two undergroundscooptrams at Copper CliffNorth Mine from a stage at theMetro Toronto ConventionCentre before an audience ofmore than 800 at a CanadianInstitute of Mining and Metal-lurgy conference.

Justweeks later, he was cen-tre-stage again, operating thesame two scoops at the samemine from 20 kilometers awayat the Garson Arena. His audi-ence this time was the PrimeMinister of Canada JeanChretien.

"It's nice to be picked forsomething like this," saidChico upon hearing of his se-lection as a New Face of Min-ing. "Not many people havetheir work recognized in thisway."

Although it will take peo-ple time to learn the technol-ogy, Chico said automationwill eventually become stand-ard practice in mining.

"Everytime you do some-thing in robotics you see some-thing else you can do,"he said."We can now operate threedrills from surface with a sin-gle operator - and we're stillin the early stages of robotics,having just started about sixyears ago."

motion, for his work with In-co's. innovative aerial seed-ing program which topped the2,000 acre mark last fall.

Bob, who has flown overSudbury for more than 20years to douse fires, spraycrops and support reforesta-tion, has a unique perspec-tive on the region. "In 1975 Iworked on many fires in theSudbury area and had thechance to see that area fromthe air quite extensively. Theimpact mining had on thevegetation definitely left aproblem to be addressed."

Two decades later, Bob be-came part of the solution -using his aviation skills foraerial applications of lime,fertilizer and grass seed.

"Traditionally we wouldrequire a lot of manpowerand do only about 15 acres ayear," said Paul. "Now, withBob and his aircraft, we didmore than 400 acres last yearin about a week."

Bob finds it gratifying tobe part of Inco's extensiveland reclamation work. "Re-storing the land and leavingit lush and green shows themining industry is a produc-ti ve and contributing mem-ber of society which wantsthe best forthe environment."

Time flies for Quarter Century memberslane Flynn never im-agined planning her

"Never in my wildestdreams," said Diane, PublicAffairs' special events/tourcoordinator coordinating thisyear's Quarter Century Clubcelebrations.

Like others among the 580new members this year, shehas seen a lot of changes inher own career and the opera-tion of the company since1971.

"There are fewer people andmore things going on," saidDiane, whose career started inAccounting and lasted 19years before moving to PublicAffairs in 1990. "The pace ofwork has increased dramati-cally today, especially in mycurrent position where everyday brings a new challenge.

"It really has gone by fast.It seems like only yesterday Ijoined the company. A lot ofpeople who were here-when Istarted have retired in the lastfive years but there are stillfamiliar faces."

When Claude Pennarunjoined the company in July,1970, sticking around to col-lect a Quarter Century pinwasn't even a consideration.

"I never thought I'd makeit," said Claude, a heavy dutyequipment mechanic at LittleStobie. "It was just a job at thetime but I'm here until I retirenow. "

Twenty-five years ago, inMay 1971, Claude's picturegraced the pages of the IncoTriangle's Family Album along-side his parents and eight sib-lings. His father Roger, nowdeceased, was a KirkwoodMine skip tender at the timeand brother Mark, who leftInco around 1980, worked atthe Copper Refinery. Claudewas at the Clarabelle Open Pitin those days, although hiscareer actually started atGarson Mine less than a year

earlier."I've been to Frood,

Creighton, Kirkwood,Clarabelle, Little Stobie - youname it," he said. "As an ap-prentice you got shifted arounda lot because they wanted you

Claude has seen a lot ofchanges in his career, particu-larly in people and equipment.He used toservice the

With underground miningequipment becoming moreand more automated , Claudesaid keeping up with changehas been a continuous learn-ing process.

Technology has been thesingle largest change inWayne Prowse 's 25-year ca-reer at Inco- specifically com-puter technology.

"Twenty-five years ago thepersonal computer was un-heard of, " said Wayne, a buyerin Purchasing . " Now every-thing we do is linked to com-puters. We're dependent on ittoday and the technology isconstantly changing."

Wayne spent the first 18months of his Inco career un-derground at Creighton beforejoining the Accounting depart-ment for 20 years and Pur-chasing for the last four.

Like Claude , Wayne's fam-ily photo appeared in the No-vember 1971 Triangle . His fa-ther Lloyd retired fromCreighton 12 years ago with37 years service and brotherGary is a Nickel Refinery main-tenance mechanic with 31years service. The framed Tri-angle photo remains in hisparents Lively home.

" It went by fast," he said."It doesn't feel like I 've beenhere 25 years.

"When I hired on under-ground it seemed as thoughthere were five or six new guyscoming in every day, but Iguess there were just as manyleaving . One of the results oftechnology is that fewer peo-ple are now able to do more ofthe work."

Early planningkey to success

That was the situation fac-ing organizers of this year'sQuarter Century Club festivi-ties slated for three nights May14 to 16 at the Ramada Inn inSudbury.

"We began generating com-puter reports in January whichtold us who the new memberswere and where they were lo-cated," said Diane Flynn, spe-cial events/tour coordinator inPublic Affairs.

"The members were brokendown by area and a lengthy

process began of sending outinvitations, coordinating re-plies, creating a seating plan,lining up volunteers and de-signing a program and nametags."

Diane was aided by Cam-brian College Public Relationsstudents Kathy Foisey andApril Lilley who were on workplacements in Public Affairs.

Far fewer members in `Class of 1971 '

T he Sudbury Arena wasthe setting 25 yearsago when the Quarter

Century Club welcomed 123new members in the `Class of1971'.

Times were different then,but the festivities and fellow-ship were much the same astoday. The spacious arena wasa necessary setting as manyof the Sudbury District 's 1,361pensioners at that time at-tended the festivities, bring-ing the single evening 's audi-ence to 2,000.

Today, new members alonenumber close to 600 and pen-sioners more than 13,000.

The crowd on that hot June17 evening 25 years ago wastreated to a high-class stageshow emceed by Montreal co-median Dave Broadfoot andheadlined b ,.,, e._amazing.,Almiros Trio, who dazzledwith their incredible jugglingfeats.

The evening's entertain-ment included limbo dancerPeggy Jackson , Canada'sTrampchamps (trampolineexperts), the tumbling andbalancing stunts of theWilliams Brothers and theviolin/accordion duo of Flor-ence Hansen and EdithEaton.

The Williams Brothers showed incredible balance 25years ago.

Florence Hansen and Edith Eaton provided musical entertainment.

There's no busine ,At the Sudbury NeutrinoObservatory (SNO),the underground

economy is booming.In fact, the economic view

from 6,800 feet below the sur-face at Creighton Mine is noth-ing but up.

Lost in the hoopla mark-ing the recent completion ofthe upper hemisphere of theacrylic heavy water vessel isthat SNO is banking on im-pressive scientific and eco-nomicbenefits from the inter-national collaboration.

With little fanfare, the $ 70million project has createdmore than 70 jobs each yearthat it's been under construc-tion since 1990, spent morethan $30 million with North-ern Ontario firms and madetechnological breakthroughswith applications for otherindustries.

Beyond its impact on ad-vancing the fundamentalknowledge in the fields ofastrophysics and, particlephysics, SNO'seconomic spin-offs caught the attention ofpolitical leaders at the mile-stone event.

Chris Hodgson„ Ontario'sMinister of Natural Resourcesand Northern Developmentand Mines, described the SNOpartnership with industry,government and the interna-tional academicandsdentificcommunity as the kind theOntario Heritage Fund wantsto support

"It's the kind of infrastruc-ture our government is talk

-ing about Not just bridgesand roadsbut attractions thatwi 11 create wealth in our prov-ince," he said. 'So for, in thisdevelopment, we have appli-cations that will even helpour Ontario construction in-dustries and them are appli-cations that vvil? benefit otherindustries."

Dr. Jon Gerrard, the fed-eral Secretary ofState, Science,Resources and Development,said Ottawa is so impressedwith the quality of the projectit's negotiating to maintainfunding for SNO which is setto begin operating next Janu-ary. He singled out Inco forspecial praise, adding thatCreighton Mine was "prob-ably the only place in theworld" where these neutrinoexperiments could be con-ducted. Itisestir nated itwouldcost as much as 1200 millionto build an oluervatory any-where else.

"We're cooing to have auniquely Canadian find interms of what happens withneutrinos from the sun. Withthe collaboration (of scientistsfrom Canada, the UnitedKingdom and the UnitedStates), we have thebest brainsin the wortd.' he said.

Dr. Doug Hallman, SNO'sdirector of communications,said up to 25 people will runthe observatory once it startsconducting experiments nextMarch or early April and morethan 20 international scien-tists will be on site continu-ally. It will also create a flurryof tourism activity with aplanned SNO object theatreat Science North. Of the $4million in annual operatingexpenses, about $3 millionwill be spent here in the North.

First Aid Competitiondidn't last as long as thatof his teammates.

Midway through themock-accident scenarioat the Copper Cliff Club,the Stobie Mine indus-trial mechanic washanded a card instruct-ing him to pass outfromheat exhaustion.

Such is the unpredict-able nature of a compe-tition designed to testcompetitors' first aidskills under pressure.

"I thought our teamdid very, very well,"said coachjean-PaulCoutu, awelder spe-cialist atthe Smelterand vet-eran of postfirst aidcompeti-tions. "Itwas a smallteam this year, but agood team. In threeweeks of training I sawtremendous growth andbonding."

Nine teams from fivelocations across North-ern Ontario took part inthe competition whichis organized and spon-sored by the OntarioNatural ResourcesSafety Association.

During the competi-tion, each team is pre-sented with an identicalsimulated emergencysituation. In this year'sscenario, the team wasa maintenance crewworking in apumphouse on a hotJuly afternoon with onlya phone and first aidsupplies. The workerswere dropped off at thepumphouse and had noaccess to transportation.

A security guard callsinforming the team ofan accident involvingtwo construction work-ers building rock cribsout of logs for a newhydro line to thepumphouse. The teamis asked to go to the ac-cident scene, about 200metres away, and assistas required.

The team is given thescenario just prior to thecompetition but is nottold what injuries to ex-pect on arrival. Twentyminutes are allowed tocomplete the task. In thisscenario, the team en-countered deepchainsow cuts, fracturesand shock - with onecasualty barely con-scious.

"You have to judgethe scene and ask theright questions," saidJean-Paul. "The judgeswon't tell you anythingunless you ask the rightquestions. Pulse, skintemperature, eyes,breath odor and all vi-tal signs are important."

"We were pleasedwith the way we han-dled the situation andthe way the teamworked together," saidScott, a first class electri-cian in the Smelter."We're getting used tohow the competitionoperates, what ques-tions to ask and thesmall curves they throwat you. The first aid skills,we've acquired are goodcommon knowledgeand I've used them offthe job quite often. Atthe camp and aroundthe house I'm sort of theneighborhood doctor. Ifanyone's child gets hurtthey send them over tome."

In past years, Incohas entered two teamsin the McCrea competi-tion - one from themines and another from

surface plants.This year, with a

shortage of volunteers,a joint entry competed,with three of four teammembers having priorexperience.

"We were ready,"said Lome, a Nickel Re-finery machinist. "Ithought we did a goodjob and reacted well tothe situations they threwat us. We had goodcoaching and the waywe practiced we wereready for anything. Infact, we were probablyprepared for more inju-ries than the scenariopresented.

"All in all it's a. goodcompetition, averygoodlearning experience andprovides probably thebest training we couldever receive," he said."It gives you the confi-'dence to know you'll re-act properly in a realsituation."

Despite having tofeign passing out for aportion of the .competi-tion, Daniel is eager toparticipate again andhone the skills he ac-quired through training

with his more experi-enced coach andteammates.

"There should bemore people involved inthis," he said. "It putsyou in a position whereyou're always ready ifsomething happens onthe job, off the job, onthe roadside or wher-ever.

"You're ready foranything."

Fred points to the presenceof drill foreman- YvonPrevost, who oversees drill-ing for the entire mine, asproof of Creighton's increasedattention to in-the-hole drill-ing.

Yvon, and the drillerswho established the stand-ard for accuracy, credit in-creased cooperation, im-proved equipment and alaser guidance system thatplots holes and drilling an-gles.

"We've been seeing im-proved results for the lastfive months now," saidYvon. "The laser guidancesystem is in use throughoutthe mine and the new CD360M in-the-hole drillshave contributed a greatdeal to the improve-ments with their increasedmobility.

"We're seeing more holesper shift and greater distancesdrilled per shift. Last year weaveraged about 100 feet permanshift and this year we'reup to 150 feet."

"You have to learn to trustthe machine," he said. "Some-times it may not look right toyour eye but you have to haveconfidence in that laser.

"The equipment we'reworking with now is morestate-of-the-art for the under-ground environment. Be-

Inco lineman heads 74,000-member OFAHW

hen GerryCourtemanchewent on his first

hunting trip at the age of 15, itwas the beginning of whatwould become a life-long corn-mitment 'to the conservationand improvement of Ontario'swildlife and natural resources.

The pinnacle of his lengthyconservation career was real-ized earlier this year when hewas acclaimed president of theOntario Federation of Anglersand Hunters (OFAH) - thelargest conservation organiza-tion in Canada with 74,000members and affiliations with535 other organizations.

A power lineman at Inco'sPower Department, Gerry's loveof the outdoors prompted himto attend his first meeting ofthe junior Trailsmen Conser-,vation Club in 1973. Duringhis second meeting he waselected President, a position heheld for the next two years.

In 1975, Gerry graduated tothe club's senior counterpart,the Trailsmen Rod and GunClub, where, "ironicallyenough," he was elected Presi-dent that same year. He saidhe doesn't know why he was sosuccessful, although he wasquite pleased to do It.

They needed someone tosurmount some of the obsta-cles, who was willing to workhard and do the legwork,"Gerry said. "1 always reallyenjoyed it."

During his involvementwith the club, Gerry held ex-ecutive positions for 13 years;seven as president; sIx aschair-man of the junior Trailsmenand two as auditor.

His involvement in numer-ous activities during this timeled to an affiliation with theOntario Federation of Anglersand Hunters (OFAH) in 1974.His involvement with the fed-eration increased in 1979,when he became a member ofthe OFAH Big Game Commit-tee and a year later becamechairman of the committee.Gerry eventually became amember of the OFAH board ofdirectors, a position he held fornine terms.

"The OFAH is a grass rootsorganization which encour-ages members, on a local level,to become involved in conser-vation and resource manage-ment," he said.

The federation has had asignificant impact, "simplythrough lobbying, questioningthe government ministries andmaking them aware of what isgoing on. We are the largestwatchdog of the governmentas far as conservation."

Gerry feels Ontario anglersand hunters are "quite ethi-cal" whether or not they be-long to OFAH, although hewould like to see more sports-men become federation mem-bers to ensure conservationwith more hunters doing thingsto save wildlife.

Gerry has received numer-ous awards for his contribu-tions and volunteer efforts toconserve wildlife and naturalresources in Ontario. The OFAHawarded him the William BarryMemorial Trophy as the topconservationist in this part ofthe province seven times be-tween 1974 and 1991. He wasalso awarded the CarlingO'Keefe Conservation Trophy,

symbolic of the top conserva-tionist in the province of On-tario three times and was fur-ther recognized by TheTrailsmen Rod and Gun Clubas Sportsman of the Year in1977, '88 and '90.

He appreciates the respectand recognition shown by hispeers in selecting him as Presi-dent of the OFAH. ',

"It is a great. honor to beselected by my peers for thisposition," Gerry said. "It's quitehumbling actually.

"My whole intent ist`O con-,tinue the work the federationhas started doing. If I can helpto facilitate to obtain, the big-ger picture, then that's what Iam prepared to do."

Energy conservation activities are not isolated to the OntarioDivision. Commitment and activities to increase energy produc-tivity and reduce environmental impact are entrenched as part ofthe business culture in other divisions.

The Manitoba Division publishes a monthly newsletter calledEnergy News. The April edition presents an article entitled EnergyConservation Benefits Environment and discusses the CanadianIndustry Program for Energy Conservation (CIPEC). CharlesHantho, an Inco director is the chairperson for CIPEC, and MiltGoble of the Manitoba Division is the chairperson for the miningsection.

In CIPEC's last annual report, carbon dioxide emissions in 1994were 1.4 per cent below 1990 levels which is attributable toimproved energy efficiency. In contrast, Canada's overall emis-sions grew by 4.7 per cent in the same period.

These kinds of results reflect the efforts made, some of which arehighlighted in other articles such as Bazooka Burners Save Fuel, Air

Taking a quick jaunt overseas to the Clydach Refinery in Wales,Terry Redmond, production manager, summarized a number ofenergy activities. In the area of monitoring and targeting moremeters were installed on water, electrical and fuel lines to increaseaccountability and better distribute costs based on actual con-sumption. This led to reduced consumption, costs and increasedefforts in finding and repairing leaks.

Other projects involved fuel switching to natural gas frombutane and an awareness program. 'Champions' are appointed towork and support the various energy teams. At Clydach, energyconservation and reducing environmental impact is definitelyentrenched in the business culture.

These are only a few small examples of ongoing energy activi-ties outside the Ontario Division. Energy conservation and reduc-ing environmental impact is part of our daily activities at Inco.

Riskmanagementand investing

The risk-free investment does not exist.As an example, let's look at buying a home from this point of view. You are

investing in real estate when you purchase your home. You are expecting thevalue of your investment to increase over time.

The real estate markets have not met expectations over the last few years.Prices have fallen, at least in most of Ontario. The risk in this investment, if youhave purchased within your price range, is minimized because you also havebeen able to live in it and saved your rent payments.

We've all heard the stories of people who hoped to 'flip' property and makea killing. They did not account for the risk of a declining market.

What are the risks?

It seems to me that there are several risks to look at in investing. There is therisk of loss of your investment. The value goes to zero. It does happen, but amuch more common scenario is a loss in investment value. This is the mostobvious risk.

There is another. You could have invested in something else which wouldhave given you a better return. If your return is reasonable, then this kindof risk is unrealistic. It is easy to see what should have been done after thefact.

Reduce the risks

The risk of losing your investment in your home because of falling real estateprices is reduced because you have diversified your investment.

You have invested in the property, but you have also used it instead ofpaying rent. You have made the investment do double -duty. That is one wayto diversify.

Diversify the investment types

A second way to diversify is to put all your money in different kinds ofinvestments . Real estate is one kind of investment . Bonds and term deposits areanother, stocks or equity investments in individual companies is yet another.

Bonds give a better return when interest rates are higher . Higher interestrates make equity or investments in shares sometimes less attractive.

Diversify the industries

You can also diversify within each of these types of investments. You wantto ensure you are investing in different types of companies in each investment

to minimize risk.For example, if you buy only power company-bonds like Ontario or British

Columbia Hydro, these are both in the same industry. These two investmentswould be said to be highly correlated. Changes in interest rates that affect oneare likely to affect the other in exactly the some way.

Your gains could be great and so could your potential losses.It is the diversification of companies in a mutual fund that have made these

funds so popular with investors. I may not be able to realistically invest in thebonds of a variety of companies, but I can get the some effect by purchasingunits of a bond fund.

Diversify the country

The investments in the two power companies are affected by other factorswhich increase their correlation. Besides being in the same industry, they arealso in the same country, so they are affected by the same political considera-tions. Again, there is opportunity for both high losses and large gains becauseof correlation.

Investing in foreign markets is often viewed with suspicion. After all, whatinformation does the average investor really have for making a decision? Therisks of foreign investment are as varied as the risks of investing at home. Itdepends on the type of investment.

Consider that investing in a U.S. company is investing abroad! Seen fromthis perspective international investing may not seem so risky. Investing in theBricklin automobile was a risky domestic investment. The risk here is from thetype of investment, not the country.

Investing in foreign companies gives you an opportunity to reduce the risksthat come from confining your investments to only one economic or geo-graphic area. There are three major areas of the world to look at - Central/South America, Asia and Europe. These are not investments to be consideredwithout gathering background information either through research or withthe help of a financial advisor.

Applying diversification

In earlier columns I have described the idea of an investment pyramid witha broad base of low-risk investments and progressive layers with morepotential for both gains and losses until you get to the top of the pyramid wherethe risks are the greatest. The risks of loss and the potential for gains in all thelevels of this pyramid can be positively affected bhrersifying the investmentsby type, industry and geographical/political location.

Diversification is an additional consideration, not a substitute.

Osteoporosis is a debilitating disease that makes your bonesporous, thin and brittle so that they break easily.

Although the chief risk factor is age for both men and women,it is eight times more common in women than men, making it oneof the three most serious health issues for women.

Osteoporosis can result in fractures, a decrease in height anda stooped posture known as dowager's hump.

All about bones

• The myth: Most people think that bones are solid andunchanging.

• The fact: Bones , like your skin and hair , are alive . They areliving tissue - a combination of collagen and minerals , includ-ing calcium . They are hard like ivory on the outside but spongyand pliable inside.

Bones are about 50 per cent water and they act as a supportsystem and store calcium . To keep the skeleton strong, smallamounts of bone are constantly being removed and replaced withnew bone . Around the age of 35, the rebuilding process slowsdown . Bones become thinner and weaker . When bones becomevery fragile and brittle , osteoporosis Is present.

Check out these risk factors for osteoporosis

• Increasing age - One in four Canadian women and one ineight Canadian men over 50 have osteoporosis.

• Being female - By age 65, the average man still has 91 percent of his bone mass, but the average woman has only about 74per cent. Men are less at risk, mainly because they have biggerbones to start with.

• Estrogen -- Low levels of estrogen, from either the earlyremoval of the ovaries or from the cessation of menstruationbefore the aye of 45, dramatically affect the bones.

• Being Caucasian or Asian (usually small-boned).• A family history of osteoporosis• Being chronically underweight, having a slight frame or

being short. If you are tall and muscular, or big and stocky, youmay fall into a low-risk category.

• Excessive dieting or a diet low in vitamins and minerals,especially calcium.

• Limited exposure to sunlight or a diet low in Vitamin D.• Caffeine - Drinking more than three cups a day of coffee,

tea or cola.• Smoking - In women this lowers the estrogen content of the

blood, thus weakening the bones. Smoking is particularly danger-ous for women who have other risk factors for osteoporosis.

• Heavy drinking - It's not known why heavy drinkingweakens bones. Perhaps because heavy drinkers often have apoor diet.

• Long term use of certain medications . Both corticosteroids(used for asthma, arthritis and inflammatory bowel disease) andthyroid hormones can diminish bone strength.

• Being sedentary and lacking weight-bearing exercise.If you have more than four risk factors, you may want to

consult a health professional concerning osteoporosis.

Detecting osteoporosis

Early detection is not easy. About one quarter of your bonedensity must be lost before an ordinary x-ray will detect thisdisease. Most times, osteoporosis is diagnosed only after signs andsymptoms appear such as:

• a broken wrist or rib;• back pain (mid to low spine);• loss of more than one inch in height;• stooped , round-shouldered appearance;• a hump forming In the back; or• a broken hip.Densitometry is o test , similar to an x-ray , which measures the

amount of bone in the lower spine or hip . It is very safe and isavailable in Sudbury. If you have more than four risk factors youmay want to ask your doctor about this test.

Prevention

• If you smoke , stop . Not only for the strength of your bones,but for your general health and well -being.

• If you drink , drink only lightly or moderately.• Consider hormone replacement therapy (HRT) if you are

menopausal . This consists of low-dose estrogen and progesterone

treatments that can unquestionably slow bone loss and preventfractures. There are pros and cons to HRT and all women shoulddiscuss this with their physicians.

• Vitamin D helps your body to use calcium. The body makesVitamin D by the action of the sun on the skin. dust 15 minutes ofsun exposure per day on your hands and face will do it. As well,milk is an excellent source of Vitamin D.

• Make weight-bearing exercise part of your daily life. Bonegrowth is dependent on exercise. Weight-bearing exercises (exer-cises you do on your feet) like walking, hiking, in-line skating,running, stair climbing, cycling, dancing or weight-lifting - orthings like housework or mowing the lawn - help to strengthenboth the bones and the muscles. Remember to Include weight-bearing activities for the upper body because the thoracic spine isprone to fractures as well . Three to four hours of weight-bearingexercise per week is recommended.

Remember it is never too late to start exercising . Studieshave shown that sedentary women, between the ages of 50 and 70,when given a weight-bearing exercise program overone year wereable to significantly increase their bone density.

• Consume enough calcium . All the cells in the body requirecalcium to function. When there are low levels of calcium in theblood, calcium will be drawn from the bone cells and released intothe blood stream. If yourdiet is rich In calcium and your blood levelcalcium is high then calcium is not removed from the bones. Thusthe bones remain dense and strong.

Recommended daily dietary allowances of calcium

• Adults - 800 milligrams• Adolescents and young adults - 1200 milligrams• Pregnant and lactating women - 1200 milligrams• Postmenopausal women - 1500 milligrams

• Milk• Yogurt• Hard cheese• Ice cream• Broccoli• Beet greens• Kale• Kidney beans

The lowdown on calcium supplements

Question: I don't drink milk and I hate cheese and yogurt, whatcan I do to get calcium?

Answer. Although it is preferable to get your calcium needsfrom food sources, If you can't do this you may use a calciumsupplement.

Rules to follow if taking a calcium supplement:• Because calcium may have harmful interactions with other

medications, ask your family doctor or pharmacist if calciumsupplements are safe for you.

• Choose your supplement by the amount of 'elemental'calcium it contains. This is the amount of calcium that your bodycan use.

• Avoid calcium from bone meal, fossil shell or dolomite asthese sources can be contaminated with toxic metals such as lead.

• Because bulk-forming laxatives interfere with calcium ab-sorption do not take these two medications together.

• Calcium supplements are best absorbed at mealtimes and atbedtime . Do not take them all at once but try and take them at thesome time each day.

Teamwork helps cobalt productionGood ideas come in threes at the Port Colborne Refinery.Recently, the Cobalt Product Action Team improved their overall

product quality through careful thinking and well executed plan-ning.

After putting their heads together, the group identified 10 areaswhich required improvement. They then held a vote to pick the topthree. Once this was accomplished, they put their plan into action.

The first change was to replace the cobalt product steam dryer witha new natural gas one hence eliminating the problem of condensateleaking into the customers' product. The next step in this improvementprocess was replacing the gas pump with a new pump complete with avariable-speed motor. The new gas pump also has one-piece seals whichare purged with nitrogen, eliminating the problem of any oxygen fromthat stage of the process. The old pump, team members point out,occasionally leaked air into the product causing discoloration due tooxidation.

Finally, the team decided to add a catalytic converter to the process.The catalytic converter reacts with any minute amounts of oxygen thatmanage to get into the cooling gas system.

This month, Port Colborne Refinery (PCR) employees have also been

for a year-end PCR draw for two tickets to either a local play orpossible sporting event.

In other news employee interest is building toward takinga first aid course. Occupational health nurse SheilaOrlando would like to offer courses on first aid to anyinterested employees. All courses, she explains, would

contain cardiopulmonary resucitation (CPR) - a proven lifesaver.

And talking about health ... six refinery employees tookthe first steps towards 'butting out' this February by enrolling

in Patch Plus. The smoking cessation program which offers the knowledge andskills needed to stop smoking with or without nicotine patches, has been wellreceived. In fact, Sheila would like to continue offering the course if interestcontinues. In the meantime, the refinery is offering Workplace WellnessWorkshops this spring designed to help employees who are looking at theircigarettes and pondering the age old question "to puff or not to puff?".

The Avro Anson Mark V took young p!in•• nn nstrainer aircraft In the Second World War. It flewfor Inco in mineral surveying from 1956 to 1980when it was donated to the Canadian WarplaneHeritage Museum.

The CWH Anson which was donated to the museum by Inco in 1980only returned to Hangar 4 late last fall after being away for restoration atthe Springer Aerospace Company of Sault Ste. Marie. Built by MacDonaldBros., Winnipeg in 1944, the Anson is one of only two flying in Canadaand possibly in the world.

Inco acquired the plane in 1956 for magnetometer and spectrometersurveying for field exploration in Canada.

"We took her down for a year. Springer did a total refurh on all thewood in the aircraft. The whole airplane right down to the spars is wood.There was dry wood in it. It was flying well so we flew it to Sault Ste. Marieand they did the whole job. It cost about $150,000," Rick was saying theother day on the phone.

With government cutbacks, how'd they manage to scrape up that kindof money?

"Through air shows, renting space at the museum and selling souve-nirs, donations, you name it."

The Anson has the distinction of being the first monoplane in servicewith the RAF. Originally designed as a six-passenger commercial aircraftin the 1930s, it quickly got attention as a general reconnaissance aircraftfor coastal command. It entered military service in 1936 and retired fromcombat in 1939. It wos later re-employed as a trainer and quickly becamethe backbone of the British Commonwealth Air Training unit as a multi-engined trainer and light utility transport.

"It's just a marvellous old trainer and people love it around here," saysRick, a flyer himself, noting the Anson still takes to the skies two or threetimes a month during summer air shows. "It's one of those planes you loveto get in, sit up front where it's roomy, with the little slide vent on the side,like out of the movies. It's just a great airplane."

Another spring for seasoned gardener

it's cold and wet at Portlock near Bruce Mines and the last of the eightchildren of famed prospector James Stobie , Cora Lee Stobie Kettles is fitto be tied.

An avid gardener who walked away with 19 prizes, including 12 firstsat last fall's local flower show, she wants to get on the land again. But thisspring is the latest she can recall in her almost 97 years in the north.

"She's doing super," says her son, Joseph, who lives nearby afterretiring last year from a 30-year career as a helicopter pilot. "She can't getout in the garden. That's the extent of her frustration. She still starts herown seeds early in the year and her plants are already for planting."

Flying the friendlyskies in the Inco`Anson '

father bought at Portlock sometime inthe 1860s. When she and her late hus-band took over the family homestead in1947, it was a shell. Instead of tearing itdown, they chose to restore it, installingthe first electricity, new glazing andpainting the interior embossed metalwalls and nine-foot ceilings.

Until two years ago when she was 95,old 'Cork', as she's known, still paintedtwo to four rooms a year with a brush.

"Her strong faith in God has beenrewarded with the blessing of excellenthealth ," her son says in a note.
