REGIMENTAL HISTORY:
At the outset of America’s War of the Rebellion U.S. President Abraham
Lincoln rejected the idea of abolishing slavery or tapping African-American military
assistance. By mid 1862, however Lincoln had come to recognize that one way to
weaken the unexpectedly resilient Confederacy was to undermine slavery. As
such, following promulgation of his 1/1/63 Emancipation Proclamation the Union
army initiated a vigorous recruitment drive which ultimately saw the arming of 166
black regiments: 145 of infantry, 7 of cavalry, 12 of heavy artillery, 1 of light artil-
lery and 1 of engineers. This movement encompassed 7,122 (primarily white)
officers and 178,895 enlisted men.
The 29th was one such regiment recruited in the State of Illinois. One
month after Federal muster the 29th moved to Annapolis, MD and thence to Alex-
andria, VA where it was assigned to the defenses of Washington D.C. On 6/19/64
the regiment joined the Army of the Potomac in siege operations against Peters-
burg and Richmond, VA.
Actions in that area included the Petersburg Mine explosion on 7/30, Wel-
don Railroad 8/18-21, Poplar Grove Church, 9/29-30 and 10/1, Boydton Plank
Road, Hatcher’s Run 10/27-28, and Bermuda Hundred. The final days of March
and the first week of April, 1865 found the 29th involved in the Appomattox Cam-
paign. Duty in the Dept. of Virginia preceded a May/June move to Texas for as-
signment along the Rio Grande River prior to final muster. Regimental losses: 3
officers and 43 enlisted men killed or mortally wounded. 188 enlisted men killed
by disease. Total: 234

3 1861 Springfield rifled musket with scabbards and bayonets and canvas covers (in original boxes). 2 have
slings, 1 has a detached sling ring which needs to be soldered back on. 1 scabbard has a tiny tear in the leather
by the brass tip, 1 has 2 wrinkles in the leather by the brass tip.
3 Maple fifes. 2 of them have leather fife holders
Women’s day dress, 32 inch waist, brown and cream small weave. 2 pieces, fitted lined bodice, front and
side boning. Coat style sleeves with scroll work braiding on sleeve. Pleated skirt currently basted to bodice.
Black fabric belt with matching black braiding, collar and under sleeves. Black glass buttons on bodice and
undersleeve cuffs. Extra buttons included
1 corset with boning. Tightens to 30”. Like new condition.
6 hoop skirt in white cotton. Includes unbleached muslin drawstring travel bag
1 wool cape. Brownish, burgundy wool, black lining, black frog closures. All edges trimmed with braiding, 2
tassels at the bottom corners
1 ultra soft gray wool shawl. Edged with beaded yarn tassels.
Black boots (from Regimental Headquarters) size 9
Flat top straw hat with black band and silk flowers in light rose and cream
1 blond wig in period style includes Styrofoam head and carrying case.
1 black hat with tulle. This is a hat I started working on, but did not finish. Supplies of Fabric, netting, feath-
ers and braiding included to make it your own.

I have a reproduction .54 caliber 1863 Sharps Carbine (no patch box) for sale. It was made by Armi-Sport (now Chiappa Firearms). I pur-
chased it back around 1997 and used it for a handful of reenactments. I live fired it on one occasion. It has been in storage for years
now. It is in good shape with only a few minor scratches. Also, the trigger lock, which ostensibly holds the trigger guard up, needs some
tinkering. I haven't bothered, because the trigger guard stays up anyway. I also have the owners manual that came with it from Taylor &
Company Firearms. I had the guys at Dave’s Sporting Goods look it over and they suggested a value of $1,100. I'm asking for that OBO.
Taylor is currently asking $1,314 for a new one. I live in Nooksack, WA, but shipping can be arranged at cost.

and new music, no costume requirement — and thought, since your
events sometimes include a ball or dance, some of your members
might like someplace else to dance.
Breathless Waltz: social partner dance with fast tunes and slow, old
music and new. Part of Northwest Dance Network.
No partner needed, just bring nonmarking shoes (Converse or slip-
pers work fine, high heels are dangerous.) We’ll be teaching basic
rotary waltz and polka, and *really* basic Walking To The Music to
get everyone on the floor. Also a taster of the redowa step for fancy
dancing.
Third Friday of each month, including tomorrow August 19th. 7:30-
10pm. In the Seattle Central MAC dance studio.

Hello there,
Many years ago I was in the WCWA. My horse has long since passed away and I still have our old tack that we used on the
battlefield. I am interested in selling everything and am hoping that you can help. I do not know the provenance of this sad-
dle, just that it came with the horse that I had bought from a former reenactor. It comes with:
- Saddle, 12 inch seat. In good condition
- Saddle bags, in really good condition
- Crupper, in good condition
- Rifle holster, never used by me, in good condition
- Breast collar with chin tie down, some surface mold
- Surcingle, a bit moldy but serviceable
All, or at least most, of the leather is aged but healthy. I am very open to price, I honestly have no idea what it is worth... so
shall we say, best offer? I live in Kirkland and am willing to meet someone about an hour or so drive in any direction. My
