“Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success.” - Henry Ford

It’s hard to believe we’re at the halfway point of the Kiwanis year. Time flies when you are having fun!

Thanks to everyone who participated in the recent mid-year conference in Fort Collins. A fun and informative time was had by all. Like always, I came away charged after spending time with the members of the best district in Kiwanis!

We saw the introduction of the I-Plan. One of the four main components of the I-Plan is Inspiration with The Formula as its cornerstone. I’m thankful we have such a dedicated Formula Team. Four of our Club Counselors recently went to training and came away with working knowledge on ways to make our clubs even better. If you think your club could benefit from this knowledge, don’t be afraid to ask. We have Counselors all over the District willing and able to help you identify some growth/service opportunities for your club.

Between the I-Plan and the Formula, we’ve been equipped with the tools to take a great District to even greater heights. My challenge to us all is to take these tools out of the tool box and put them to use. We’d be crazy not to! Let’s each one of us make a commitment to ask someone we know to participate in one of our service projects or come to a fun club meeting. Then let’s ask that person to join. We all enjoy being a member of the Kiwanis Family. Let’s share the reason why.

I’m excited for our upcoming conventions. International Convention early bird registration deadline was recently extended to May 15. Please consider going to Toronto and supporting our own Bert West in his bid to become an International Trustee. He will be an asset to that board.

Mark your calendars for August 4-7 for District Convention in Pueblo, CO. A service project opportunity during convention is to build a playground for Posada of Pueblo. Fundraising is underway for this worthwhile project. To learn more about this project, contact Carol Chiarito at 719-214-1331 and then join in construction on August 4 and 5. Don’t forget your golf clubs and take part in the Foundation golf outing at the beautiful Walking Stick Golf Course. Pack your finest evening clothes to celebrate “Oscar Night” on August 6. Look for details on how to nominate your club or club member in this issue.

Thanks for all you do!

Mid-Year Conference had a nice turnout of 200 attendees. The Hilton Hotel, Fort Collins proved to be a good location and feedback from the Mid-Year Conference Survey gave it a 4.7 out of 5 rating, with the new Treasurer Forum

ranked as the best forum at 4.8 rating. Thank you Bill Hurt, Clark Morrel, & Tyler Rusch for hosting that forum! Education on the I-PLAN was the

focus this year and the committee worked diligently to present timely and beneficial forums, as well as have fun in Fort Collins.

guys, thank you!

With Mid-Year behind us, the District Convention Committee and the Pueblo Kiwanis Club is busy planning the 2016 RMD District Convention to be in Pueblo August 4 – 7, 2016. Following the Rocky Mountain District traditions, there will be fun, forums and fellowship throughout the Convention. Meet

Governor-Elect Candidate Hayley Suppes on page 7.

The RMD Kiwanis Foundation Luncheon is Friday August 5, 2016. As each RMD Kiwanis Member is also a member of the Foundation, this should be a “must attend” luncheon. It is the annual meeting of the foundation with a full report on the status & health of the foundation, status on the District projects and election of foundation trustees. This year there are 5 trustee positions up for election. Trustee candidates are needed! If you are interested, please contact

Ron Seybold, Nominating & Election Committee Chair, [email protected].

Of course, no convention would be complete without a Governor’s Banquet.

Governor Jon Mangino has selected the Kiwanis Night at the Oscars for his

theme, complete with lights, cameras, action and awards! Check out Page 6 to learn all about the Kiwanis Oscars criteria.

As we enter our second century of service, there is a renewed energy with the

March 1, 2016

Dear Nancy,

Please accept this letter as my official notice of candidacy for the office of Governor-Elect, 2016-2017 for

the Rocky Mountain District of Kiwanis International.

I am a member of the Kiwanis Club of Delta, where I served as President, 2013-2014. I am currently

serving my second term as Lieutenant Governor for Division 7. I am the Delta High School Key Club

Kiwanis Advisor and serve on the Formula Committee as a Club Counselor. Professionally, I am the

Marketing & Public Relations Director of an emergent Boys & Girls Club with established and developing

club sites in Western Colorado.

My genuine heart for service and belief that Kiwanis is the best, most substantial service organization with

the most incredible potential for progression drives my decision to run for the position of Governor. I'm

confident that my marketing and public relations expertise, specifically in regards to the nonprofit arena,

lends a unique and powerful perspective to leadership and growth of the great Rocky Mountain Division

of Kiwanis International. It is with excitement and honor that I respectfully run for the office of Governor-

Elect, 2016-2017.

Sincerely,

Hayley Suppes

Rocky Mountain District Board of Directors,

The Kiwanis Club of Delta respectfully submits the "Endorsement of Candidacy" for Hayley Suppes as Governor-Elect for the Rocky Mountain District of Kiwanis International in 2016-2017.

Hayley has been a respected member of our Club since 2011 and rose quickly as a proven leader. Shortly after joining our Club, she was asked to fill the position of Vice President. She then held office as President -Elect and President in 2013. She has attended multiple trainings, Conferences and Conventions. She has been an engaged and supportive Lieutenant Governor for two terms, keeping us connected to the District.

Her youthful energy, forward thinking and deep commitment to service have been an asset to not only our club, but to our Delta Kiwanis Family and our Division as a whole. In 2011, she took on the role of Kiwanis Advisor to our Key Club and because of her enduring responsibly to the success of youth in our community; our Key Club is a thriving institution at the high school.

Respectively, Hayley continues to support our Club in growth efforts by spear-heading development of a 3-2-1 style Service of Kiwanis enhancement to our Club. We have already identified multiple large impact service projects for our Club this year and are attracting new prospects for member recruitment, thanks to the guidance and leadership of Hayley Suppes.

Hayley's passion for Kiwanis, enterprising nature and dynamic leadership skills will lend to her success as future Governor. Sincerely,

Kylynn Wilson

Hello Rocky Mountain District Kiwanis!

My name is Aliza Mitchell and I have the distinct honor of serving as the 2016-2017 Key Club

District Governor. Nothing makes me more proud or inspired than applying my servant leadership to

such an integral part of the Kiwanis family.

Facing the year ahead of me, I am filled with optimism and ideas regarding the mighty Rocky

Mountain District. This past year we surpassed 100 Key Clubs and had over 3000 registered

members. That is 6000 hands, 3000 minds and 3000 students ready to serve their homes, schools

and communities. I could not ask for better circumstances as the new District Board and I move into

our positions of leadership.

The entire Rocky Mountain K-Family can be excited about all of the great things that the Key

Clubbers will achieve in the next year. More membership and club growth, new partnerships with

different organizations, new opportunities for the membership to be involved with their

Kiwanians, and more service than ever all stands right in front of us. I cannot wait to see the hard

work of the incredibly devoted and passionate key clubs pay-off.

Something that I have always been incredibly passionate about as a leader and a Key Clubber is

strengthening the bond between students and Kiwanis members. The most successful Key Clubs

have strong support from their sponsoring Key Clubs, and successful Kiwanis clubs often utilize the

ambition and hard-working nature of key clubbers to broaden the impact they are able to have on

the children of the world. You, as Kiwanians, can help us to strengthen the bond, and we will be

able to touch the lives of even more people in our communities. As a club, you can reach out by

sponsoring a servant leader on their way to ICON or Key Leader, attend club meetings, or invite the

club members to one of your service projects. There is nothing more rewarding than assisting one

another in the process of changing the world!

If you, as a Kiwanian, would like to stay updated on all the things Key Club is doing or have any

sort of questions, you are more than welcome to email me at [email protected]

and I encourage you to check out our website: www.rmdkeyclub.org and find us on Facebook.

I look forward to working with you and the wonderful district that we call home!

Hello Rocky Mountain District!

My name is Ryan Chepovsky, I am the 2016-2017 Circle K Governor for Rocky Mountain District and a Sophomore at CSU-Pueblo.

For those that may not know what Circle K is – no it is NOT the gas station. Circle K is the collegiate level of Kiwanis. It is the perfect transition between High School Key Club to full Kiwanis member. Now that you have a small idea of what Circle K is, it is my pleasure to not only introduce myself but other district officers for the 2016-2017 year.

Samantha Leshikar our district Secretary-Treasurer, Colorado School of Mines

Travis Canney our Event Coordinator, Senior at Colorado School of Mines

The three of us make up Rocky Mountains District's Circle K board and we are all extremely excited to see what we can add to Circle K this year.

We are already hard at work making sure this year will be fantastic and that everything runs smoothly over the summer. We hope to strengthen our existing clubs, our district board, and to charter a few new clubs along the way. It is going to be an amazing year for Circle K, but we can always use help from you. If there is a college or university near your Kiwanis group reach out to them and see if getting a Circle K club started would be possible and if there is a Circle K Club already in your area invite them to meetings and keep involved with them, after all we are all a part of the K-Family.

All three of us on Rocky Mountain’s District board would like to thank each and every one of you. Without Kiwanis support we would not have this amazing opportunity to grow as leaders.

If you would like to learn more about Circle K visit our District web site at www.rmdcki.org or our international web site at www.circlek.org and finally my e-mail is [email protected].

Please shoot me an email if you have any questions! Again, thank you so much for all that you do! Let’s Rock n’ Roll RMD!

Page 11: In this Issue SECRETARY - Amazon Web Services · Tom Martinez Jr Colorado Springs CO TREASURER Robert Garretson Fort Collins CO IMMEDIATE PAST GOVERNOR Stephen Plank Colorado Springs

It is always a pleasure to write the quarterly newsletter to Kiwanis members of the Rocky Mountain District and to share with you the progress your Rocky Mountain District Foundation is making to benefit the mission and goals of the RMD. The Rocky Mountain District Foundation continues to support the Kiwanis Clubs through a variety of means which include: our signature “three houses” project (Ronald McDonald House of Southern Colorado, Ronald McDonald House of Denver, and the Rose Hill Hospitality House in Grand Junction), support of our Key Clubs and CKI’s, and Kiwanis Club Grants.

Our signature project, the “three houses”, provide a safe, clean, and inviting place for families to stay who are dealing with unexpected and difficult situations. We continue to fulfill our pledge of $30,000 per house to be given over a three-year timeframe.

The Foundation agreed to award a $1,000 scholarship to be given to one Key Club member and to one CKI member. The announcement of the recipient is highlighted below this article. In addition, we are providing a $1,000 grant to the governor and members of Key Club and CKI, these funds are to be used to cover travel expenses to their respective International Conventions.

The Board is proud of the growth we have witnessed in our Kiwanis Club Grants. We have approved eleven grants during the first half of the 2015-2016 fiscal year for a total of $16,850! The Foundation board receives as many as eight grant requests each quarter and although we would like to continue to fund the grant requests, we believe it is our fiduciary responsibility as Foundation Board Directors to significantly reduce the number of grants we can fund. We are working diligently on our budget for the upcoming fiscal year and clarifying our grant request guidelines.

These generous gifts are only possible through the combined effort of our Rocky Mountain District Kiwanis Clubs and members! The Board is asking you as Kiwanis members and Kiwanis Clubs to consider the great work that is accomplished through our RMD Foundation. We need your financial support if we are to grow and provide capital for projects that benefit children throughout the Rocky Mountain District. Let’s make this district convention a show of our financial support for the foundation. We thank you for your support!

We are looking for several new foundation board members whose term will start in October 2016. Serving on the RMD Foundation Board is an honor and a valuable experience. Please let Nancy Wiehagen ([email protected]) or Ron Seybold ([email protected]) know if you are interested in serving.

Our District Convention is August 4 – 7 in Pueblo, CO. You will not want to miss it! A fun way to support the foundation is by participating in our golf tournament which is scheduled for Friday morning, August 5th. The Foundation Luncheon is Friday following the golf tournament and will be held at the Carriage House on the River Walk. Please plan to attend as we will have representatives from each of the three houses, elect new board members, and share with you the many accomplishments of your RMD Foundation. Be thinking about your Kiwanis Club basket and auction items for our ever popular Silent Auction. Thank you in advance for your donations to this fun auction where all proceeds benefit the Rocky Mountain District Foundation!

See you in Pueblo!

ROCKY MOUNTAIN DISTRICT FOUNDATION

Foundation Board Grant Awards, Donations & Sponsorships

At the March 23, 2016 Foundation Board Meeting, the Rocky Mountain District Kiwanis

Foundation awarded $8,300 in grants.

Foundation Grant Awards

Kiwanis Club of Alamosa $300: The Story Walk is an educational activity that places a children's story along a popular walking route in the community. This project will inspire physical activity outdoors while encouraging reading at the same time. The story books that are included in the Story Walk will be rotated periodically, encouraging children and their families to return time and again.

Grand Junction Golden K Club $500: Currently, the club delivers toys each month to 23 local agencies where children with pain or stress exist, and they are generally delivered by club members who are not toymakers. The toys are delivered every two or three months to the children’s hospital in Aurora, Colorado.

Kiwanis Club of Grand Junction $2500: The Kiwanis Club of Grand Junction strives to change the lives of children in the community who are afflicted with silent disabilities by providing them with dogs bred with specific characteristics suitable for service work.

Pueblo Kiwanis Club Community Playground Project $2500: The Kiwanis Club of Pueblo seeks a one-time grant of $2,500 from the Rocky Mountain District Kiwanis Foundation in support of a service event that will cover both Kiwanis One Day on April 2 as well as offer a service component to the Rocky Mountain District Convention that the club is hosting August 4-7, 2016 at the Pueblo Convention Center. The project will cover not just purchase of the equipment but the preparatory concrete and leveling equipment required to properly install the climbing walls and swing sets.

This grant is contingent on the Pueblo Club raising the funds to fully fund the entire project.

Delta Kiwanis Club $2500: This grant is to enhance the early literacy program at the Delta Library. This grant will include considerable service hours to be performed by our club, painting, fixing of existing shelving along with the purchase of book bins, furniture and learning materials, substantially impacting approximately 2600 children the program serves yearly.

Where’s BOB?

The Kiwanis Club of Grand Junction has a new, exciting and fun way to invite guests, appreciate fundraising sponsors and appeal to kids.

It’s the “Where’s BOB” campaign! BOB is an adorable stuffed bear – he’s been inducted as a member of the club and attends all the meetings and events. He’s particularly good at inviting guests! We take BOB along with a personal invitation to a potential members’ office on Tuesday before our Thursday lunch. He sits in their office wearing his Kiwanis shirt, pin and name badge and of course generates a lot of buzz until Thursday when they bring him back and enjoy a meeting and lunch.

We also take pictures around town and post them to Facebook and Instagram “Where’s BOB?” BOB is the heart of Kiwanis and can be found anywhere – at a gym, at a corporate sponsors’ office, at a construction site, with the Students of the Month… even at the Mayor’s office this week. It’s becoming quite the talk of the town – where will BOB be next! Maybe YOUR office with an invitation to lunch! Stay tuned for more information on the antics of BOB. And if you’re wondering where he got his name legend has it that the original name for the Kiwanis Club was the Benevolent Order of the Brothers (BOB)

14

The Alamosa Kiwanis Club was able to present a $600 check to Save the Children, thanks to a matching grant from the Kiwanis RMD Foundation. The Alamosa Literacy Council and the Save the Children organization are in the process of a creating a Story Walk around the local City Hall. The Story Walk is an educational activity that places a children’s story along a popular walking route in the community. This project will inspire physical activity outdoors while encouraging reading at the same time. The story books that are included in the Story Walk will be rotated periodically, encouraging children and their families to return time and again. With the $600 donation the Alamosa Kiwanis Club will be sponsoring two poles along the Story Walk path that is scheduled to be finished in May. Thank you RMD Foundation for the matching grant, the Alamosa Kiwanis Club greatly appreciates it!

As The Formula Chair for the Rocky Mountain District I’ve spoken with many of you, worked with KI, and evaluated all I have learned through my travels around the district as your Governor to determine the best way for our district to grow. The answer is YOU. What a great time to be a Kiwanian and share what it means to you. Take a minute and write down all the reasons you are happy someone asked you to join Kiwanis, then when you ask someone to join you’ll know the gift you are giving them.

Have you heard about the Kiwanis I-Plan? We introduced it at Mid-Winter Convention and it is exciting. We are hoping to see you at District Convention in Pueblo this August where we will continue to explore the exciting possibilities Kiwanis Clubs have through implementation of the I-Plan. You might be thinking what is the I-Plan?

The I-Plan is a strategic plan. A strategic plan is a road map for an organization. It’s flexible and is designed as a guide for districts and clubs to reach their goals. There are 4 “I’s” or pieces to the I-Plan: Inspiration, Impact, Image and Investment.

Inspiration is about membership engagement. It’s the first “I” because without Kiwanians we can’t continue our necessary and vital mission of serving children in our communities and the world. Kiwanis members are necessary for us to build, retain, and support a growing Kiwanis network. We have in place a dedicated group of Formula Team Kiwanians and Lt Governors engaged in the process of providing support to clubs and to building new clubs in communities where there are no Kiwanis Clubs. Kids need Kiwanis -#kidsneedkiwanis - because we provide them the benefit of adults who are invested in their communities and care about their welfare.

If your club would benefit from a Club Counselor (who is trained as a coach, not an advisor) please let your Lt Governor know. Why not give it a try? A Kiwanis Club with new members adds new life and is attractive to others. New members bring new ideas, excitement and enthusiasm. People want to belong to something that is meaningful and fun. Service projects are still our backbone and the reason many people join. Why do you love Kiwanis? Think about this when sharing the Kiwanis experience with others. We are busy, therefore, it is crucial that current and new members receive something for their time, energy and resources.

Thank you for your help in making Kiwanis stronger and better in the Rocky Mountain District. Think about your club, district and world. There is a huge amount of opportunity, today we join together to grow Kiwanis for the next 100 years!
