The Hon. Trina Thompson Speaks at CoA The College of Alameda’s CAFYES Kickoff event, “Metamorphosis – Change Through Higher Education” Lecture Series, took place on April 29 and featured the Hon. Trina Thompson, Alameda County Superior Court Judge, Practitioner Member - Coordinating Council on Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention. One of the moments where Judge Thompson filled our hearts with the confidence to step out on faith to follow our dreams:

“If you are the smartest person in the room… leave the room!” - Trina Thompson

She spoke of her “invisible years” as a youth/college student in foster care, and how she taught herself to not back down from the unknown. She grabbed her professional career by the horns and embraced her spiritual roadmap, to navigate the challenging terrains of the legal profession, and to seek her truths and life passion. Judge Trina Thompson is currently assigned to the Rene C. Davidson Courthouse near Lake Merritt in Oakland, where she handles felony jury trials and multiple co-defendant homicide trials. She has served as the Presiding Judge of the Alameda County Juvenile Court and Supervising Judge of the Wiley Manuel Courthouse. In June 2011, following an appointment by President Obama, Judge Thompson was sworn in to serve as Practitioner Member of the Coordinating Council on Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention. She began her term serving under Retired Attorney General Eric Holder. She continues to serve in the position under Attorney General Loretta Lynch. Judge Thompson was first elected to the Alameda County Superior Court in November 2002 and sworn into office in January 2003. Prior to her appointment as the Presiding Judge of the Juvenile Court in 2010, Judge Thompson presided over felony jury trials, adult truancy court, and was responsible, along with one of her colleagues, for managing the domestic violence calendar for Alameda County. In 2001, Judge Thompson was appointed as a Juvenile Court Commissioner, responsible for hearing juvenile delinquency and dependency matters. Additionally, she was chair of the Alameda County Educational Task Force for the juvenile court to ensure the education of state-raised children.

Prior to her appointment as Court Commissioner, Judge Thompson managed a private criminal defense practice, focusing on juvenile, misdemeanor, felony and capital defense trials, and served as a public defender in Alameda County. She received a B.A. in Legal Studies from the University of California at Berkeley and graduated from UC Berkeley's Boalt Hall School of Law. Judge Thompson was recently featured in the documentary, “In the Red” by filmmaker Mimi Chakarova. “In the Red” is a feature documentary about transformation, about growing up poor, young and black in America. What does it mean to change one’s life? How can someone’s

history be left behind? Three young men have the opportunity to do both. Their lifeline to a new life, a new history, is an 18-week program in Oakland, California to train them to become firefighters. The film – raw, intimate and revealing – follows their lives for nearly two years. Not everyone will succeed. But for those who make it through, their lives will be forever changed. “Education was my emancipation and it can be yours!” -Trina Thompson

Crisis Management Training on Campus May 10 When an emergency occurs, it is critical that everyone take immediate steps to protect themselves and others on campus. CoA has retained an emergency preparedness expert to facilitate a series of workshops focusing on what to do when a crisis occurs on campus. Our first two workshops this week were very informative. We will be offering two more workshops next week, in the Pit of Building F:

Tuesday, May 10, 12:30-1:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 10, 3:30-4:30 p.m.

The classroom and campus crisis workshop will incorporate immediate action responses so that anyone can follow simple but specific directions without having to learn extensive protocols for each of several dozen different types of emergency situations. We will give you tools to use in a crisis and teach you how to:

• Protect building occupants • Stay safe when conditions outside the building are safer than inside • Act quickly when there is a potential threat of danger to occupants of a campus building • React when there is an immediate threat of danger to occupants of a campus building • Isolate and provide greater protection from external airborne contaminants or wildlife

Managers, please ensure all of your staff and student workers attend one of these training workshops. Faculty and students are strongly encouraged to attend. Article by Mary Beth Benvenutti
