and leadership skills among young adults so they can address the needs of their communities and succeed in an increasingly global workplace."

During the month-long exchange, team members visited 10 Rotary clubs in eight cities and towns. In each city, team members spent a day working alongside a professional in their respective fields. They also took part in cultural activities to learn more about the history and people of Virginia. Home-stays were provided by local Rotarians.

Crabbe said that the best part of the exchange was the friendships which were developed. "During our time in Virginia, we had the distinct honour of meeting some of the most wonderful and loving people on the ace of the earth while experiencing the friendships and family of Rotary," she said.

Governor of District 7600 in Virginia, Bill Pollard, said that he believes the exchange will open doors to ongoing collaboration between District 7020 (which includes the BVI) and District 7600. "The BVI's GSE team was fantastic. The Rotarians in District 7600 greatly enjoyed hosting them, and I believe that the teamenjoyed their visit to Virginia. I am confident that this exchange will result in a strong partnership between Districts 7600 and 7020."

The Group Study Exchange took place from September 25 - October 25, 2008.

ROTARY CLUB OF ROAD TOWN - BVIEarly Bird Drawing – 2008 Grand Raffle

On Saturday, 29 November, 2008, in the parking lot outside Bolo's Department Store, the Rotary Club of Road Town held the first of two draws in its 2008 Grand Raffle. The first prize in this Early Bird Draw was a cash prize of $2500 and there were several other prizes. The tickets were drawn by Sophie B of ZROD. On behalf of the Rotary Club, Trefor Grant, the Club vice-president, announced the lucky winners.

This year's raffle is slightly different from previous years. As Club President Stephanie Benn explained, "to stimulate interest, two draws will take place; the Early Bird Draw and the main draw which will take place on Christmas Eve. Winners in the Early Bird draw have had their tickets put back into the main draw, so that they could be winners in both. In addition, whereas in past years the prizes have either been a car or a few eye-catching cash prizes, this year the Club has involved a number of local businesses in providing several other exciting prizes, so that there will be more winners, whilst retaining the cash prizes. The Club is extremely grateful to the local businesses that have supported this year's raffle."

The winners of the Early Bird draw were:

First prize $2500: Sherrey-Ann Morris Tkt # 3131 Second prize $1000: Sherry Moses of Lower Hope Tkt# 1487 Other prizes in no particular order:

One men's and one women's watch donated by Island Services Ltd: Charles Tobias Tkt# 5135 Case of 12 bottles fine wine donated by TICO: Ms Nicky McGuire Tkt# 896 Gift Voucher donated by Riteway/Road Town Wholesale: Wanda Nichols Tkt# 1369

Ms. Sherrey-Ann Morris was the Club's guest at their weekly luncheon where she was congratulated by her fortune and presented with a cheque for her prize.

BVI’s Rotary Family helps test airport’s disaster readiness

Members of the Rotary Family of the BVI provided essential manpower for a simulation exercise that tested the readiness of the territory’s emergency services on December 10, 2008.

At left: Injured “victims” at the airport simulation exercise are rescued by fire officers at the T.B. International Airport in the British Virgin Islands.

Members of the BVI’s two Rotary clubs, its Rotaract Club and its Interact Club volunteered to be ‘victims’of a simulated airplane crash just off the runway at the T.B. Lettsome International Airport.

The purpose of the exercise was to identify strengths and weaknesses in the territory’s emergency response.

Rotary volunteers were given roles to play, which ranged from some passengers who were killed on impact, to others who were injured. Other volunteers played residents and family members who heard about the accident and came to airport to find out about the status of their loved ones.

After the exercise was over, volunteers shared fellowship with emergency responders and airport staff.

The exercise was keenly watched by outside observers, who used it as an opportunity to identify areas where the airport authority and response agencies can focus their efforts to improve.

ROTARY CLUB OF ROAD TOWNChild Mortality Project

Submitted by Trefor Grant

A mother and her 18-month-old son lie under a mosquito net provided by C-Nes, a UNICEF partner in the state of Assam, India.

"In Africa, Malaria kills one child every 30 seconds. A simple mosquito net, treated with long-lasting insect repellent, could save children from this deadly disease." UNICEF UK website-

This project was the idea of President Stephanie for the Child Mortality Project of the Clubs' year. VP Trefor volunteered to take on the task of ensuring that it comes to fruition.

Rotary District 7020 – Part 2 of 2 - Club News – January 2009 - Happy New Year! Page 12

Task: To spearhead a project towards ending Child Mortality.

Agencies Involved: Rotary Club of Road Town and (possibly) Rotary Club of Tortola, UNICEF. Funds earmarked: $5,000.00 each from the Rotary clubs of Road Town and Tortola.

Synopsis and status of project currently

Nets are approximately US $15.00 for sets of two. We were directed to UNICEF UK as we are BritishDependent Territory and because we wanted the nets to be direct specifically for Africa. We will be donating the funds through a special committee called "Inspired Gifts" which UNICEF UK has set up specifically for the mosquito net project.

This committee also allows donations of any size and is targeted to specific areas that the donor requests. This works well for us as we found that; for an organization to make a gift direct to a country's program, UNICEF National Committees are required to meet a funding threshold of $50,000 to transfer funds to UNICEF and this mosquito net project internationally has not met that threshold, so this put the project back a little.

Currently, as this newsletter is published, for the project to be finalized, we are awaiting bank details and any further instructions from the UK branch in order to complete the donation. We expect to have this project complete if all goes well by December 31, 2008.

Well done, Road Town!

Mostly young professionals - they are probably the youngest average-age club in the world and certainly the best looking. They meet every Wednesday at 6.45 a.m. for breakfast at the Grand Old House. Having fun helping in the community.

Rotarians Paul Keeble, Mike Mandish, Dave Phipps, Walt Mustin, Steve Morris, and Todd Davey put together another shelter 6 December 2008. Of the ten new shelters eight are now built.

These shelters have been in place now for a number of years and provide much appreciated fundraising from advertisers as well as much needed shade from the sun and occasional tropical rain.

The Bus Shelter Team are out most weekends either building new shelters, once new spots around the island have been identified, or maintaining the long standing ones.

Great job!

Above: Our new Board for 2009/10 have been duly elected and are ready to take up their duties when the time comes. The committee will be Paul Byles, President; Fiona Moseley, Vice-president; Wil Pineau, President- Elect; Richard Lewis, Treasurer; Margaret Rattray, Secretary; Ravi Kapoor, Susie Bayles,

Nickii Sonnenberg; Sue Holmes; Greg Vasic; and Kent Eldemire.

At left: Our congratulations go to Music Extravaganza winner, Richard Barton who walked away with the $40000 prize on Saturday evening. It was a fabulous evening, enjoyed by all!

VP Wil sends his thanks to all concerned for their hard work and commitment to this major fundraiser. Many Rotarians put "service before self" to ensure that the event was a success.

This is an occasion when the club members can come together and work together to ensure that the club has the funds to continue with the service programme that supports so many local community projects and causes.

Thanks to those who “pulled out the stops” to make this happen.

At left, this year's Rotary Central Music Extravaganza marks 10 years together for Natalie and Brent McLean. They met in 1998 when Brent appeared in the band "Heat" at the same event.

Natalie said, "We always buy tickets for the event and this year is special!" They now have three children - and they are forever grateful to Rotary Central for the chance to meet each other.

And finally, congratulations to Rotarians Sue and Naude who were married on the beach at the Westin Hotel in Grand

Cayman on Saturday November 1.

We wish them all the best for their future, and their work in Rotary, together.

Pétion-Ville Rotary Club, Haiti…Submitted by Gary Perodin, President-Elect 2009-10

Concerning the activities of the Pétion-Ville Rotary Club, we have just accomplished the Career Fair intended for the young persons from 15 to 22 years old. Nearly 1000 young persons participated in this Fair, which brought together professionals, Rotarians, and non- Rotarians, of different occupations, who presented their information to the students. Our Interact Club organized this event.

At Christmas, the plan was to organize a Children’s Christmas for more than a thousand young children of the underprivileged classes of the population. They would have food and drink, presents, and musical entertainment. Again, the Interact Club was involved.

On the occasion of start of the school year, in October, 2008, the club distributed school supplies to more than ten state schools of Pétion-Ville -- that is to say to about 3000 schoolchildren.

Re: 2008 Jamaica Dental Mission

On behalf of the volunteers of the Eighth Annual Jamaica Dental Mission, I would like to thank you and the members of the Savanna La Mar Rotary Club for your continued support. We gratefully acknowledge the help that you have provided.

Without your endorsement and sponsorship, we would not be able to undertake such an enormous operation and to effectively accomplish as much as we do in such a short time. A summary of the number of patients that were seen and the procedures that were performed is highlighted in the table below.
