‘Striving for excellence’

Sports Partnership produces young leaders of the future…

“… sports leaders demonstrated a mature attitude to everything they were asked to do and performed every role with enthusiasm and commitment. They were a pleasure to have in school and excellent ambassadors for Kings Heath Boys.”

“Their skills were amazing, (the boys) just got on with what they had to do, a credit to themselves and their school. Well done boys, thank you so much. Hope to see you again next year.”

Our sports facilities have given us the opportunity to invite our local community into school as members of our Sports Partnership. The facilities are open every evening providing activities for all age groups and they are really well attended. Primary schools use the facilities and our staff support the primary school staff in their own schools and lead sessions across all year groups.

This has in return given our students the opportunity to play their part in the community. After a very busy year our young leaders attended the Aegon Classic Tennis finals.

Yasin and Zahid’s journey to successFirst you have to go to a local cricket club and if you are good enough you get selected to go for trials, then from there you get selected to play for a district or a county. Yasin started to play cricket at Moseley Cricket Club when he was 8 years old. He played for Moseley U9, U10 and U11 so was put forward for the trials.

There are two trials – one is in the winter, which takes place after the cricket season, and the other is just before the cricket season starts. Both of these trials determine whether you play at county or district level.

Both boys have been playing at county level for Warwickshire;Yasin for the last four years and Zahid for three years. They play other counties in different cities and often stay over in hotels.

Kings Heath Boys are very proud of their achievements to date

Year 7 Sports Leaders joined a big audience at Edgbaston Priory Club to watch Birmingham’s AEGON Classic Tennis tournament. As a reward for their hard work this year in helping and leading primary school competitions and sports days, students were able to watch some of the best female tennis players in the world. With the sun beaming down on Centre Court, the students were treated to two great matches involving two time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova and the current Great Britain No.1, Johanna Konta. The boys’ etiquette throughout the day was exemplary.

ART SHOWCASE

Playing at County Level

Aegon Classic

At Kings Heath Boys the Art department strives to nurture the artistic skill of every student.

Taking inspiration from a wide range of contextual references and starting points, pupils are encouraged to develop their own ideas and concepts through experimentation with a wide range of materials and techniques. As well as the more traditional techniques of drawing, painting and printmaking pupils are encouraged to utilise modern technology

with the use of photography, photomontage and photoshop. The work being exhibited clearly reflects the effort the boys have put in this year.

Maths Challenge

Amien emailed the headteacher to organise this event to raise money for Al-Ayn Social Care Foundation …

“I would like to hold a fundraising event at break time selling cakes and pastries to students and staff members … Hopefully, we can reach more than a £100 which is equivalent of feeding 10 young children for 3 months or a family of 6 for 6 months.”

Amien met with Mrs Przybek and Miss Chillington. They both agreed to his idea but he had to organise the event himself. This he did. Both staff and students joined in to help at break and lunch time.

As Amien says…

“It was a superb day on Friday where my friends and I sold cakes at break time to the students and staff. Our goal was to raise a £100 for Al-Ayn Orphanage, but, we raised a whopping £261 from selling all sorts of cakes and biscuits. I would like to thank the staff for helping us and their help is greatly appreciated.”

Congratulations to all involved.

Six students from year nine were selected to represent Kings Heath Boys at the annual ‘Maths challenge’ competition hosted by Bishop Challoner School. The students worked as a formidable team against seven other schools from the local surrounding South Network area to claim their respectable position in the challenge.

The day commenced with a selection of verbal and non-verbal mathematical style questions as a starter activity. Once the main activities were underway it was clear that the students were driven by a strong sense of team work, an eye for problem solving, discussion and debate which helped to solve various problems.

During the course of the day the students were presented with many challenges, but what stood out was their ability to persevere, focus and sustain their diligence as a group, which made the completion of each task well within their reach.

As a group the students worked tirelessly to maintain a strong position in the competition and concluded the day with the consistently held fourth place, only missing out on third place by just ten points.

Chief tastersSix of our students had the pleasure of attending The Education Catering Exhibition at the NEC. The exhibition is the only show in the UK dedicated to the school meals market. Our students and our Head of Catering had the opportunity to meet suppliers and manufacturers. Over 160 companies showcased food and beverages, equipment, systems and services. Our students thoroughly enjoyed the event and provided excellent feedback to the companies. They were also instrumental in inviting a select number of companies into our school to offer our school community further tasting sessions of the new products before we introduce them in September 2017.

Students in Year 7 were invited to sample a variety of culinary delights provided by a number of new catering suppliers. Students were treated to marinated chicken wings, tasty chicken thighs, curry boxes and halloumi burgers which were all HMC approved. After the tasting, students completed a questionnaire to voice their preference about what they had eaten. A further tasting event will be held in September before we finalise our new catering suppliers.

Comments from the students:“Peri peri burger was really tasty”

“Burger was nice but better without coleslaw”

“I liked the chicken wrap with poppadums in them”

“There was a lot of variety”

“BBQ chicken wings were too good for words”

“Chicken wrap was lovely, but better without carrot in it”

Preparing for the world of work

Work Experience

Business Dress Day & Mock InterviewsMock interviews took place with a number of employers, training providers and college representatives coming into school. All of our year 10 students had the opportunity to dress in smart office wear for the day. This was to provide a realistic representation of what would happen in the real world. The students were given individual feedback to work so that they would be ready for the real thing. They certainly dressed to impress.

Work experience has come and gone for another year.

The spectrum of businesses used this year has widened from small local businesses to international charity organisations.

Our students did very well in securing themselves placements right across the Birmingham area.

A large number of students chose their placements based on future professional aspirations but found that the working world is far more serious and challenging than they first thought. Needless to say that there were a few eyes opened!

During the two weeks many of our students were visited on site with many managers complimenting the students on their timekeeping and positive attitude towards work. The experience students had (good or bad!) has given them the opportunity to make informed decisions after completing their examinations.

We have had three students offered part time jobs based on their attitude and one will offered an apprenticeship!

Many thanks to the employers who have supported us in offering places to our students. It is really appreciated.

Located in the rural part of Warwickshire, Kenilworth Castle is over 900 years old. Dating back to when the Normans ruled England, it was originally built to defend the Normans during their conquest in the 12th century. This amazing site will blow one’s mind in an instant.

Whilst exploring the ruins of the castle, Year 7 learnt that every part of the castle had its own story to tell; the Elizabethan garden, which was made as a private retreat for the Tudor monarch, was a magnificent sight. The castle itself was gifted by Elizabeth I to a dear friend known as Robert Dudley. It was said to be her favourite place in England.

The castle gave us an idea of what life would have been like living inside the walls of the castle. Furthermore, the castle had loads of defence mechanisms, including walls, towers and a surrounding lake. As a result, this would have made it very difficult to attack Kenilworth Castle. Unfortunately many of these defences were dismantled on the orders of Oliver Cromwell after the English Civil War.

Remembering the day overall makes us feel astonished at how beautiful English Heritage can be. The trip was amazing - if only there was more to explore!

During May half term we took 60 of our new Year 7 students to Blackwell Activity Centre for the day. Both students and staff thoroughly enjoyed the day and getting to know each other. The day included exciting activities like climbing, zip wiring and archery. The students particularly enjoyed ‘Crating’, an activity which involved two students in a harness balancing on a stack of plastic crates with the rest of their group helping to support them and stack the crates higher.

Everyone worked really well in their teams throughout the day despite many not knowing each other prior to the day. The new friendships created were particularly evident in the team building exercises and many students said that the day definitely broke the ice for them ahead of September. We were so impressed by how friendly and well-behaved all of the students were and look forward to welcoming them to Kings Heath Boys in September.

Thursday 8th June was an important day for Britain as many people visited their local polling stations to vote in the National Election. It was also an important day for Year 7 at Kings Heath Boys as many of them visited Stratford upon Avon for the first time.

This educational visit was a wonderful opportunity to enrich students in British culture. Shakespeare’s Birthplace developed students’ knowledge of history and allowed them to experience first-hand how society lived during Elizabethan times. There was also a wonderful opportunity to watch actors perform Shakespearean plays and even the occasion to request what we wanted to see: the romantic love scene from ‘Romeo and Juliet’ was appreciated by the staff; the students much preferred the comedy performed by ‘Macbeth’s’ drunken porter.

Thanks to the Birthplace gift shop, English lessons are now full of budding writers with quill pens. Perhaps we have the next Shakespeare in the making?

As well as engaging the students in English literature, drama and history, students very much enjoyed being at one with nature. They took great pleasure in exploring the gardens and sculptures at New Place (the remnants of Shakespeare’s final home) and spent time attending to the animals at Mary Arden’s Farm. The donkeys were most popular; the boys didn’t want to leave them behind!

A wonderful day was had by all. Thank you to all of the staff involved, particularly the team leaders Miss Buckingham and Miss Kirk. A special thank you to Miss Kirk for organising this event.

Our school community is what it is because of the respect we show one another. Indeed Colin Diamond on his visit in school during the summer made the following comments on the Birmingham School Noticeboard.

“On Monday I visited Kings Heath Boys which is one of the most relaxed, calm boys’ environments I’ve ever encountered. These boys are clearly comfortable in their skins and warm and gentle in their interactions. Huge credit to Bernadette Przybek and her team for creating this inclusive, caring ethos.

We were devastated by the Manchester and Birmingham attacks and definitely stand together with those communities.

It is important that students keep themselves safe and we have discussed how to do this. Run, hide, tell is the UK counter terrorism police advice shown here:
