ICYMI Newapp helps the public help local rivers watersheds
On a brisk October day Trout Unlimited volunteer Parker VandenBerg and DNR forester Mike Smalligan paddled a canoe down the White River in Newaygo County testing out Trout Limiteds new mobile application RIVERS The acronym stands for River Inventory by Volunteers for Efficient Restoration Strategies
The long name is part of a big goal - to help Trout Unlimited and local White River Watershed Partnership managers plan restoration projects by recording degraded habitat locations To do this the organizations developed a downloadable app to enlist the help of anglers and citizen scientists shy
volunteers who share scientific insights about places they love
In case you missed it we recently shared a story about how the app makes it easy for people paddling fishing or just spending time on their favorite rivers to take note of unusual or potentially problematic things like too much sediment shoreline erosion trash or poor water visibility and then share what they see and where they are
Read the full RIVERS stOry and learn more about how this simple app can help people serve as citizen scientists

Plan to bury radioactive waste near Lake
Huron is dead
Flint MI - A Canadian company is searching for a new location to build a nuclear waste site After years of resistance from lawmakers and decision-makers on both sides of the border plans to build the underground facility near Canadian shores of Lake Huron have dried up
The news brought satisfaction to US Rep Dan Kildee (D-5th District) who took up the issue after assuming office in 2013 The environment won The land won The Great Lakes won he said
Ontario Power Generation (OPG) announced on Jan 31 that it would not move forward with plans for a permanent disposal site in Kincardine Ontario The underground development would have been 2200 feet below the surface and less than three-quarters of a mile from Lake Huron
It made no sense to us then that nuclear waste that will be active for thousands and thousands of years should be stored so close to the greatest source of freshwater on the planet he said
OPG owns two nuclear reactors northeast of Toronto and the Bruce Nuclear plant in Kincardine which would have been home to the underground development
Low-level and intermediate-level waste from the three reactors--such filters and tools--would have buried in dry rock that is isolated from the lake according to the company
Kildee and many others were not convinced We do know that in the past when the nuclear industry has given assurances that nothing bad could happen something bad happens he said

The US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) is seeking input from the public on management efforts for cormorants The proposed rule would establish a permit for state wildlife agencies to authorize management techniques that were previously prohibited States would have the delegated authority to determine whether when where and for what purposes to control cormorants within limits set by the USFWS The public comment period will expire on March 9 To submit a comment click here
Commercial Guiding (HB 4442)
Currently there is minimal regulation on becoming a hunting or fishing guide in Michigan The aim of this legislation is to have a low barrier to entry for guides with a highshypenalty system for bad actors Individuals with game violations would be unable to operate and profit from the resource for a period of time or indefinitely Guides would need to apply for a license to operate be CPR and basic first aid certified and would be required to report certain data

230+ inland fisheries surveys in 2019 yield key data insights
Did walleye stocking on an inland lake help grow its yellow perch population Do changing water levels alter fish movement Are more salmon returning to home waters Finding answers to questions like these is a big part of why the DNR does fisheries surveys - and in
fact conducted more than 230 such surveys last year alone
In 2019 staff from eight DNR fisheries management units completed 132 surveys of inland lakes and 101 stream surveys Anyone fishing those waters might have seen crews collecting key data on state fisheries So just what are crews looking for
According to Randy Claramunt Lake Huron Basin coordinator surveys fall into three categories
bull Evaluating management actions
bull Understanding status and trends
bull Finding answers to new questions or concerns
Each management unit is responsible for determining if actions like fish stocking or habitat improvement projects had the desired effect Claramunt said For example last year the DNR stocked more than 21 million fish across Michigan Surveys help us evaluate whether stocking resulted in better recreational fishing in certa in areas or improved a lakes overall health
Other annual surveys help managers track the status and trends of fish communities and important aquatic habitat on different lakes providing a picture of these lakes geographically and over time
Claramunt said streams throughout the state are handled a little differently through two types of status and trends surveys fixed sites and random sites
At fixed sites we annually estimate fish population abundance - usually trout in cold shywater streams and smallmouth bass in warmer
waters - on a three-year rotation while random site surveys are intended to give a species snapshot and show relative abundance he said We collect in-stream habitat data at all our status and trends sites
Fisheries managers use that third category discretionary surveys to answer questions or address current concerns perhaps something raised by a local biologist an angling group or a lake association Such surveys might be conducted to assess habitat suitability for a threatened and endangered fish species
No matter the type of survey DNR fisheries managers use the resulting information to strategize their actions detect early indicators of invasive species recogn ize developing threats to fish and habitat health and much more If youd like to learn about the DNRs lake and stream surveys especially in your part of the state contact the fisheries management unit in your area
