Principal’s Report Continued..

Maths Team Challenge Last Friday, 5 of our very talented students from grades 4-6 went off to compete in the Gympie Maths Team Challenge. Roughly 175 students attended and challenged each other with some very difficult mathematical problems. There were two rounds of questions, the first round were solved as a team and some of the responses were very difficult. One answer was 100000000000000001. The second round the questions were a little easier however they only had roughly 3 minutes per question and had to work with a partner.

Below are a list of 4 questions that our students needed to solve in a short period of time. Two sides of a triangle are 14cm and 18cm. if the third side is an integer, what is the smallest possible value for the length of the third side? If all columns rows and diagonals are equal what is? Two sides of a triangle are 14cm and 18cm. if the third side is an integer, what is the smallest possible value for the length of the third side? .

If all columns rows and diagonals are equal what is?

Next year we are going to go again and this time our team would like to start training in January for the event in August. It is exciting to see students keen to learn and challenge themselves within their academic pursuits.

Principal’s Report Continued..

Attendance Over the last 2 weeks we have had a slight rise in attendance. It is vital for all students to come to school every day, however if a child is sick please contact the school and let us know. If your child is going to be away for more than one day please let your child’s teacher know so that we can get some work home for them. Every day counts and as a parent we only get one shot at making the best opportunities for our kids and every day at school provides your child with the best start in life. Curriculum at Home Foundation skills are vital to learn. These foundation skills are incredibly important and can help build more challenging concepts from this. When I was in school I was told that I needed to learn every times table. From 1 to 10. No one told me that I didn’t need to learn 100 facts. In fact I only needed to learn 45 (the others are repeated).

Also, if I know my 2 times tables and my 10 times tables then all I really need to know is 28 tables. This is a great tool for our students to use and tick of the tables that they know. Please note this isn’t for students who don’t yet know their rainbow facts, doubles, near doubles and have a very clear understanding of addition and subtraction. Some of our year 2 students are starting to learn about multiplication.
