2014 Exhibition Videos Available

Videos of the 2012, 2013 and 2014 workshops are available for purchase. They are available in two different formats: a high quality format suitable for Windows (WMV) and a slightly lower quality format suitable for Macs (mp4). These can be downloaded or purchased on USB memory stick. These files are large, ranging in size from 2.5 GB per year for Mac format to 5 GB for WMF format.

For download, the price is $US 20 for one year’s set, or $US 10 if you attended that year. USB prices are higher because of equipment and shipping. Contact us for a quote. For more information, go to the ISSA website.

SSA/MSA Jury

It’s time to get those scratchboards ready if you want to apply for Signature or Master Artist status. Applicants for Signature Artist must submit 7 scratchboards for jurying. Master Artist applicants must submit 10 artworks and a resume outlining their achievements. Master Artists must have completed 4 of the following: solo exhibitions, gallery representation, taught workshops, been published in a recognized industry magazine or book, received national/international awards, or conducted other activities that promote scratchboard art. Applicants will be juried by a panel of 3 ISSA Master Artists. Submissions will be open January 1, 2015, and the deadline is February 15, 2015.

Changes to MSA/SSA Jury Process – Starting in 2015!

One of the growing pains of any new organization is that sometimes our initial good ideas do not work as well as we had hoped. The existing Master and Signature levels jury process is one area that a number of members have felt was falling short of our goal for ISSA to be regarded as a high quality professional art organization. A very large number of people are getting in under the present 2 out of 3 juror ruling. As our highest levels of membership, one has to ask “is 2 out of 3 enough?” The overall feeling has been that it is not.

In most national organizations, only a small percentage of applicants achieve the highest levels, and that usually takes many years of work. For ISSA to be taken as a legitimate and respected organization, our highest levels need to truly mean something and be really quite difficult to achieve. We feel we need to raise the bar from where it has been under the 2/3 juror rules.

January 2015, Vol. 4, Issue 1 International Society of Scratchboard Artists ! 2

Page 3: In this Issue 2015 Exhibition - scratchboardsociety.org€¦ · 2015 Exhibition The 4th annual ISSA Exhibition will be held from Saturday, June 27 - Sunday, July 26, 2015 at the Delaplaine

An additional complaint has been that people who do not get juried in to the various levels do not know why or what areas they need to work on. The present system only provides them with minimal feedback. Some people have also mentioned that they do not feel that they really know what the jurors are looking for.

So, after taking all of these things into consideration, we have come up with a score card which clearly lays out for both juror and applicant what specifically we are looking for in the MSA and SSA jurying. The biggest proposed change is that to pass, now MSA and SSA will have to achieve a passing score from all three jurors. We have also increased the emphasis of the resume/CV in the MSA level, with it carrying a fairly high portion of the score.

To address the concern that we could end up with a juror who simply does not like or understand an applicant’s style, we will be implementing a “fall back” that if an applicant gets 2 out of three 3 “yes” votes, but the one “no” vote is more than 20% lower in their score from the other two jurors, a fourth juror will be brought in as a tie breaker, and whatever they score will decide whether someone gets approved or not.

Jurors will fill out a score card for each applicant. These completed score cards will be given to the applicant when they are given the jury results (jurors will be anonymous). We hope this helps give applicants a clear idea on areas they need to work on before they apply again, as well as areas where they did well. Jurors may add additional comments to the score cards too (and we actually will ask them to provide a bit more details if they score someone very low in an area).

We will also be proposing a change to the bylaws that will allow artists the ability to reuse a larger percentage of works when reapplying the next year since it will be that much harder for them to get in. The change will allow them to resubmit 7 out of 10 for MSA and 4 out of 7 for

SSA. You should be seeing an email about this soon!

These changes will not affect existing MSA and SSA artists’ status (unless you let your membership lapse and then later decide to rejoin). While this might seem unfair to future applicants, there is no way for us to re-jury existing members, so these changes will start with the 2015 MSA and SSA applicants and go forward. If we find this system is not working after a couple of years, minor changes may be made in the future as well... As always, we are only hoping to grow and improve the society. Leaving something the same just because it has been that way in the past is not a good practice. Our organization is still young, so trying to find something that works better now is superior to going several more years doing things the same way “just because.”

We expect these new requirements to help ISSA grow into the strong and respected art organization that we all want it to be!

Signature Scratchboard Artist (SSA) Score Card

Artistic skills - please rate each area between 1-10 (1 means an artist is weak in that area, 10 is strong)

______ Technical skill (Does the artist exhibit excellent line quality, smooth value transitions, use of lost and found edges, etc.? If color is used is it handled with skill? Did the artist pay attention to all elements of the work?) Juror notes:

______ Use of values (Does the artist use the full range of dark and light in their work to give the art shape and form? If the work does NOT use the full range of values, does it appear intentional?) Juror notes:

______ Composition (Does the artist create works with consistently strong compositions that engage the viewer?) Juror notes:

______ Originality (Does the artist employ unique, creative and original ideas in their artwork, not generic concepts that have been done over and over again?) Juror notes:

______ Accuracy (Allowing for artistic interpretation and intended stylization, does the work accurately represent the style and subject that the artist was trying to depict. Abstract or impressionistic works should still show accuracy in the elements of design, form and shape.) Juror notes:

______ Artistic Intent (Does the work show a clear artistic vision) Juror notes:

______ Cohesive Body of Work (Does the body of artwork look like it was all created by one artist. Artwork does not need to represent a single subject matter, but for a Master we would expect a cohesive body of work that shows the artists ability to create a consistent quality of work that shows that artists own unique style). Juror notes:

______ Professional Presentation (When you look at this body of work do you feel the quality and the way that it has been presented is that of a professional artist that represents the absolute highest quality of a scratchboard art? Are the images presented professionally (clear, focused, cropped, well exposed)? Did the artist follow guidelines when submitting? Is the general impression that of a professional artist?) Juror notes:

___/80_ Total Artistic Skill score

Consistency of Quality- score between 0-20 ______ Do ALL 7 works exhibit outstanding quality worthy of a Signature Scratchboard Artist?

___/20_ Total Consistency of Quality score

___/100_ Total Score

To be accepted for SSA an artist must achieve a score of at least 80 out of 100 points (80%) by all three jurors. Jurors may not discuss submissions or scores with one another!

In the case where an applicant receives two out of three yes scores and the no score differs by 20% or more from the yes scores an additional juror will be brought in as a tie breaker.

Resume/CV - score between 0-50 As per our bylaws one of the MSA requirement is an artist that has "worked diligently to promote the medium in the public eye." A score of 0 is an artist that does not meet the minimum requirements. A low score would represent an artist that has done the absolute bare minimum to fulfill the CV requirements (four of the seven options, but with only one listing under each of the four heading). A top score would represent an artist with a very strong, well rounded resume with extensive record of promoting the medium in a wide variety of ways both in the past and present. They would have many listings under at least four headings and likely have numerous activities under all seven headings. The seven possible areas of activity are: 1) Museum, National, and/or International exhibition history, 2) National or International Awards, 3) Solo Exhibitions, 4) Gallery representation, 5) Formal teaching of workshops or demonstrations, 6) Publication in recognized industry magazines/books, and 7) Other activities that show a member’s dedication to promotion of the medium.

Tips for Packing Your Artwork to Ship by Ginger Gehres Being the Exhibition Director for the 2014 ISSA show in North Carolina was one of the highlights of my life. Meeting so many talented people and showing their work to over a thousand viewers in a beautiful Gallery was a thrill. It was also a huge responsibility to receive, hang, and return the art in the same condition as they were sent - One that my minions and I did not take lightly.

Some artists packed their work professionally. Some, not so much. In fact, we had a few damaged boards and frames. Thankfully, I was able to have them repaired, but Galleries have the right to refuse the art if it is received in poor condition. No one wants his or her art damaged anyway.

I have put together some tips for packing your art, based on the packaging we received. Hopefully, it should help eliminate breakage and difficulty unpacking/repacking for the people receiving the work.

The Best:

Air float shipping boxes with customizable padding and heavy weight cardboard. Some that used glass on their art, used the safer, plexiglass and covered it with glas-skin. The glas-skin protects the person opening the freight from being cut and keeps the broken glass together. You can find them both at:http://airfloatsys.com

Air Float box. Easy to open and ship. Art by Jonathan Webb.

Glas-skin on face of glass. Artwork by Cathy Sheeter.

Better:

Here’s a link to a video from Saatchi Art, thanks to Dana Brown of Ampersand Art, that shows how to pack art well. This is a canvas, but it has great ideas.http://help.saatchiart.com/customer/portal/articles/1584279-packaging-paintings?utm_source=artists&utm_campaign=6a8aab1731-Artist_Sunday_September_28_2014&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_b08c1fbe4d-6a8aab1731-342213349&mc_cid=6a8aab1731&mc_eid=a37cc73af8

Just As Good: EZ Art Shippers can be found at Jerry’s Artarama and other stores. These worked well. Just make sure that the frame sticks out further than your artboard so that the plastic or cardboard won’t touch the surface. Here’s a link to the video for using this product:http://www.jerrysartarama.com/discount-art-supplies/art-shipping-supplies/ez-art-shippers.htm

This is an example of using the EZ ship package. Frame corner pads added to protect frame. Art by Heather Lara.

Insulation can be used as packing/buffering material. Found in large sheets at home hardware stores.

This artist even made easy pull-out handles!

Frames need to be secured to art and in good repair. Inexpensive frames sometimes don’t hold up to wear and tear of traveling.

Make sure frames and boards are secure.

Shifting can cause damage to both board and frame. If home framed, tape down sides of board to the frame to prevent slipping and marring the front of the board.

Frame corner pads are great protection!

Secure frame corner pads with plastic roll wrap. Besides protecting the frame, it keeps anything from touching the surface of the board

Another idea:

Pack single or multiple pieces (same size) in one box.

Step 1

Measure and cut cardboard to the size of shipping box larger than the art. Cut four tabs to wrap around artwork.

Step 2

Place another sheet on top and repeat tab cuts.

Step 3

Add next art piece

! Step 4

Fold tabs together and secure with tape.

 Step 5

Finished art will “float” inside center of box without shifting.

What not to do:

Don't have anything other than glass touch the face of your artwork. Having nothing in direct contact with the surface is even better.

Don’t let bubble wrap or plastic touch the face of your scratchboards. Any heat will make the surface sticky and the plastic will stick to it. It can make some terrible marks on your surface.

No bubble wrap touching the art!

Do not use packing p-nuts. They are terribly messy. Most Galleries won’t accept art with them. They also stick to boards (just like bubble wrap).

! No packing p-nuts!

Don’t use flimsy cardboard boxes. Marking the box “Fragile” doesn’t mean that other things won’t get stacked on top of it. Standard cardboard boxes crush easily.

Don’t leave a lot of air space in the box for art to move. Keep it secure with padding. Protecting the surface is important, but so is protecting the edge, sides, and rear of the piece. Corner pads on frames are great. If you can pack artwork in a box within another box, do it.

Other Tips:

The more uniform and cleanly the packing is done, the less likely the work will shift or have inconsistent protection. Cramming any old packing material into the box will not offer much protection. Be mindful that someone has to open and repack your work.

Label outer packaging with "Fragile" and "Artwork" labels. They may not treat it as fragile even if it has a label, but they really won't treat it as fragile if they don’t see a label. Labeling or writing “Artwork” on the box helps because a lot of the workers loading the trucks are artists themselves, or at least respect artwork. More than you'd think.

Use a plastic bag over an inner box if shipping during snowy or rainy weather.

I believe developing a fine style of scratchboard, takes the utmost in patience, thus scratchboard develops a person's mind and personality - a refinement that naturally happens.

My latest work, "Cador - the Tricolored Heron,” was executed in scratchboard with Ampersand inks. The piece comprises three panels (Head and Body both 12" x 12") and the Feet (8"x8").

Last summer, walking along the Anhinga Trail in the Florida Everglades, I spotted this beautiful bird glistening in the morning sun by the shallows of the swamp. He immediately caught my attention with his brilliant plumage and majestic stance waiting for his next catch. Enamored by the beauty of this scene, I was determined to capture his pose and color in scratchboard - my favorite medium.

Inspired by the bird's princely demeanor, I named him Cador, after a legendary Cornish prince related to King Arthur.

I plan to frame this on a square board with a bluish-gray mat with a small gap between each panel.

Incidentally, as you may recollect, Sally Maxwell had given me a few suggestions on capturing the texture of feathers in scratchboard during our last ISSA meet in Cary - these really helped me as I worked on this piece.
