Welcome! You are cordially invited to read through this newsletter that has been twenty-one years in the making. That’s right, 2004 marks the launching of our first ever quarterly technology newsletter. When the founders of JWE wired their first home, Jimmy Carter was still in office. Advance apologies to all you youngin’s, but much has changed in home technology for the building industry since then. In 1983, a phone line and a couple locations of cable television were con- sidered leading edge. Nobody had ever heard of the Internet. Computers?... Never need one of those at home. That new fangled facsimile machine sure was something with its impossible to unroll thermal paper (just don’t leave a fax in the sun)! Built-in ceiling and wall loudspeakers didn’t exist for home- builders. Small dish satellite systems were a pipe dream destined for fail- ure…cool people had “beepers”, the re- ally successful ones could be identified by the suitcase sized battery pack/cel- lular telephone they lugged around everywhere they went. Wow, how times change! Com- puters?...Seems like every 5 year old knows how to use one. Cell phones fit anywhere, fully capable of telecon- ferencing and taking digital pictures. Homes now come fully equipped with networks, and options abound for automation, built-in audio systems and home theaters. High definition, Dolby Digital, 802.11g, Category 5e, 6, and 7…who’d have thought it, and where are we going? Participating with Shea Homes in this year’s “Project Playhouse” to raise money for HomeAid was an honor. 2004 marked the fifth straight year that JWE has partnered with a local home builder as technology consultant and a provider of goods and services. The TradePartners Mill shown below is a state of the art playhouse complete with a technology niche displaying an LCD flat panel monitor, courtesy of JWE. Since 1989, HomeAid has been successful raising over $40 million in their quest to provide shelter to temporarily homeless individuals and families. JWE has directly contributed to several HomeAid projects in Orange County includ-ing Interval House, Mary’s Shelter, Laura’s House and Emmanuel House. Provid-ing shelter and an opportunity to improve one’s life is a philosophy JWE will always support.

Sometimes it all comes together for the right purpose…

(TradePartners Mill was auctioned off on Saturday, October, 23rd with all proceeds going directly to HomeAid!)

Being named the number one dealer in the nation for any product is a great honor, but when the product is from a top manufacturer of speakers for profes-sional audio it is that much sweeter. Proficient Audio waited until the CEDIA (Custom Electronics Design and Installation Association) annual conference held in Indianapolis in September to announce that JWE was their top dealer in the nation for the second consecutive year. Our relationship with Proficient is terrific. They provide JWE top notch service and their products are outstanding. For an integrator of new home technology, great sounding in-ceiling and in-wall loudspeakers are essential products. With built-in loudspeakers, a new home can be set up for a surround sound home the-ater system and a whole house music distribution package that blends away in to any décor while providing amazing performance. Proficient provides JWE a product line that gives great satisfaction to our homebuyers. We regularly hear glowing remarks from our customers on how excited and pleased they are with their music systems. Our technicians love Profi-cient products too because they are extremely well engineered and install neatly and quickly. Our thanks to Proficient for acknowledging the success of JWE with their “2003 Dealer of the Year Award”!

Proficient’s Dealer of 2003…

Vendor relationships can be difficult to manage. We continually seek out great products, great service, and great pricing. In our business it only seems logical that these are essential elements for success, but you’d be surprised by how many manufacturers don’t get it right…but Russound continually does. Developing great product may be the easy part. Supporting the product technically and managing release dates and availability while assuring that a market exists at any given price point is a much greater challenge. JWE initially sought out Russound because of the established quality of the brand. The relationship has since blossomed into a partnership. Recently, Russound Vice President Joe Brouillet commented “Russound has enjoyed a mutually beneficial relationship with JWE Corp for over five years now. Both companies realized the sales potential and the many benefits of quality dis-tributed audio/video systems for both the home builder and the home owner. For the builders, offering value-added options that make for extra profit as well. For the homeowner, it means music everywhere simply and affordably.” Thanks, Joe. We feel the same way.

, take a bow…

Technology in the neighborhood will be the rule at Amarante, the new William Lyon Homes project located behind the gated entry in the exclu-sive village of Covenant Hills in Ladera Ranch. Featuring Spanish, Tuscan and European influenced architecture, Ama-rante is now for sale offering homes ranging from approximately 2,646 to 3,713 square feet. The beautiful hillside setting provides a perfect backdrop for these one and two story homes and their thoughtful floor plans. If you have a chance, stop by the model home complex and witness how JWE has teamed with William Lyon Homes to proudly display the benefits of home technology. Every home being built at Amarante comes equipped with a structured wiring home network that exceeds the rigid standards of Ladera Ranch. A 36” Open House panel serves as the distribution hub for all home communication wiring. Modules are included standard to easily facilitate voice, video and data networking throughout the home. As part of the Ladera “future proof” goal of home design, Amarante includes additional wiring and empty raceways strategical-ly routed behind the walls to facilitate future upgrades for automation and other technologies. One available option to all buyers at Amarante is the seamless security solu-tion offered by JWE’s Integrated Alarm

Systems. Actually used and active to protect the model homes during the sales process, Integrated Alarm has installed a complete package in each home made up of components from Honeywell Security (Master panel, LED Keypads, motion detectors, door and window sensors, intrusion siren, and wireless control). As an added bonus for William Lyon Homes, Integrated Alarm has also run additional cabling to all valuable home electronics and pro-grammed the system to alert the sales agents should any person tamper with or attempt to steal equipment. As you stroll around the three model plans you will be escorted by pleasant

music cascading from built-in speakers, part of each models whole home audio system. You may notice the elegant keypad volume controls controlling each room of audio. The keypads are disabled during the sales process to eliminate any uninvited tampering of volume levels. These keypads utilize the patented A-Bus Technology to send signals over Cat5e cable from a music source, and then provide amplifica-tion to each speaker. A-Bus technology provides each home with a very high-end or custom home appearance with fantastic features at a very affordable price. The family room of each plan is equipped with a home theater system and built-in surround sound speaker solution. Exhibiting Dolby Digital com-patible 5.1 designs, each family room is capable of reproducing theater quality audio effects with video displayed on either plasma or LCD high defini-tion monitors. Integra Professional Audio/Video components have been programmed to deliver crystal sharp visual images with amazingly detailed sound replication. During normal sales hours the systems are kept at modest volumes, so buy one of these beautiful model homes and JWE will help you experience the full capacity of home theater (or just buy a home theater package from JWE for your existing home).

Managing numerous projects in varying stages of construction throughout Southern California can get tricky. Add in the fact that many of our home technology products are sold as lifestyle op-tions to exacting consumers and the focus on accuracy and quality becomes even greater. Addressing this opportunity in 2004, JWE invested in the new position of Quality Control Field Superintendent. To date, four outstanding individuals have been promoted in to this position. They’ve created a team that continually strives to make the quality of installation for JWE products and services the best in our industry. With quality assurance as the driving force, our QC Superinten-dents spend their days not only reviewing installations, but providing field training and technical guidance in an effort to increase the skill and knowledge of all JWE technicians. They have regular contact with the builder’s site management teams to improve customer relations, address performance, and relay information back to the office as it re-lates to scheduling or customer desire. They assist in “tailgate” safety meetings, where they have an opportunity to share pictures from their “library” depicting the “do’s and don’ts” of working at a jobsite. JWE is committed to quality. Our QC Field Superintendent team is proving to be an extraordinary success in demonstrating our com-mitment to the process and raising the level of awareness for all field technicians of the importance of accuracy and quality.
