PATSY by Nicole Dennis-Benn (9781432873936) Also a Today show #ReadwithJenna selection on many “best books” lists for 2019. Patsy gets her long-coveted visa to America, she leaves behind her beautiful

but impoverished Jamaican town, her overzealous, evangelical mother, and her five-year-old daughter, Tru. She is destined to see her oldest friend, Cicely, and possibly rekindle their young love. But when Patsy arrives in Brooklyn, America is not as Cicely’s treasured letters described. Meanwhile, Tru builds a faltering relationship with her father while trying to understand her mother’s reasons for leaving. “Sumptuous . . . Dennis-Benn ingeniously humanizes and changes up the typical immigrant saga . . . The result is a knowing, at times painfully funny novel about the disorienting relationship between selfhood and sacrifice,” said O, The Oprah Magazine. (Basic 7 — 2/5/2020)

DEAR EDWARD by Ann Napolitano (9781432873400) This LibraryReads and Indie Next is a #ReadWithJenna Book Club Pick as featured on Today and already a New York Times bestseller. One

summer morning, twelve-year-old Edward Adler, his beloved older brother, his parents, and 183 other passengers board a flight in Newark headed for Los Angeles. Edward is the sole survivor of a plane crash. A breathtaking story of learning to love again for fans of Jodi Picoult. Library Journal said, “what makes this narrative so effective is its alternating between the ordinary events unfolding on the flight and the aftermath of the crash, which keeps the sense of loss and the significance of what has happened fresh in readers’ minds.” A starred review from Booklist said, “It is a skillful and satisfying examination of not only what it means to survive, but of what it means to truly live.” (Basic 6 — 2/5/2020)

HOW WE FIGHT FOR OUR LIVES by Saeed Jones (9781432875237) This compelling memoir has three starred reviews and received the Kirkus Prize for nonfiction and the 2020 Stonewall Book Award. It

also appears on numerous “best books of the year” lists. Jones conveys his own personal story of growing up a gay, black man in the American South. He also talks about his struggles with finding acceptance within his family and society. Jones explores relationships, religion, freedom and all that is involved with being someone you are not. He skillfully brings the reader into his experiences and how he fought to become his authentic self. A starred Publishers Weekly review notes, “Jones beautifully records his painful emergence into adulthood and, along the way, he honors his mother, a single parent who struggled to support him financially, sometimes emotionally, but who loved him unconditionally until her death in 2011.” This stirring memoir is beautifully written and will stay with you long after you finish reading it. (African American — 2/19/2020)

FOLLOWERS by Megan Angelo (9781432876548) An electrifying story of two ambitious friends, and the dark choices they make. Orla Cadden would like to be a novelist, but instead, she is stuck covering celebrity fluff.

Her roommate, an ambitious actress, hatches an unethical plan to make them infamous. Later, in a closed society with government-appointed celebrities (think “The Truman Show,” with an awareness on the part of those filmed), a woman named Marlow with 12 million followers discovers a shattering secret. Wry and tender, bleak and hopeful, this darkly funny story reminds us about genuine human connection. This LibraryReads pick has multiple starred reviews. “Endless clever details and suspenseful plotting make this speculative-fiction debut an addictive treat,” said the starred review from Kirkus. (Core 5 — 2/5/2020)

ONE NIGHT GONE by Tara Laskowski (9781432875220)

With its complex female relationships and feminist themes in the vein of Megan Abbott, this timely title crosses suspense and women’s fiction genres. Moving back and forth between 1985 and 2015, this story features two unforgettable protagonists and untangles a mystery in the past as it explores how little has changed for women even decades later. A starred Publishers Weekly calls it “an

evocative and beautifully crafted tale of suspense . . . at the heart of this intriguing thriller lies a disturbing awareness of society’s inclination to view women as disposable.” (Reviewers Choice — 2/5/2020)

LOST YOU by Haylen Beck (9781432875213)

Novelist Libby, and her son, Ethan, are on vacation. Things are finally looking up for Libby until a moment of inattention when Ethan wanders into the elevator

without her. When the elevator doors open again, Ethan has vanished. A missing person case turns into an abduction case with a twisty and shocking revelation to follow. “ . . . readers will find themselves torn in two [as two women] each make their case for being a three-year-old boy’s rightful mother,” said Booklist. A starred Kirkus review calls it “an adrenaline-pumping, anxiety-inducing thriller built around a core so sentimental it just might make you cry.” (Peer Picks — 2/19/2020)

WE, THE SURVIVORS by Tash Aw (9781432875800) Long-listed for the Man Booker Prize, with multiple starred reviews, this story is set in a Malaysian fishing village, and revolves around Ah Hock, an ordinary man convicted of murder. A local journalist is intrigued by his story. During his interviews, a second story

emerges: one of a changing society, power disparities, and a country overwhelmed with immigrants seeking refuge and survival. Vital pieces of information that were not brought to the surface during his trial begin to emerge. A starred Publishers Weekly review writes, “Aw’s potent work entraps readers in the slow, fateful descent of its main character, witnessing his life spiral to its inevitable conclusion.” (Bill’s Bookshelf — 2/5/2020)

FENTANYL, INC. by Ben Westhoff (9781432876197) One of Kirkus’s Best Books of 2019, Ben Westhoff unfurls the results of his four-year investigation into black market drug factories, dealers in the United States,

and beyond. Specifically targeting Fentanyl, K2, and Spice — once medically reputable medications — the author digs into how these drugs were re-created and ultimately lead to thousands of deaths. Westhoff tracks down the scientists responsible for inventing these drugs and visits the factories in China where the drugs emanated. These Novel Psychoactive Substances (NPS) exacerbated the opioid misuse epidemic and Westhoff helps to bring this fact to light. “Highly sobering, exemplary reportage delivered through richly detailed scenarios and diversified perspectives,” notes a starred Kirkus review. WHERE THE LIGHT ENTERS by Sara Donati (9781432872830) Dr. Sophie Savard, a biracial woman, is an obstetrician in 1880’s New York City. Trying to rebound from the death of her husband, Sophie throws herself into her work with

poor women living on the edge of society. Her cousin, Dr. Anna Savard, joins her efforts. Soon they are drawn into the disappearance of a prominent banker’s wife as well as the murder of a young woman that makes them fear for their patients. A killer is on the loose, luring women in with the promise of a safe abortion. This historical fiction story addresses the resistance women physicians faced as well as reproductive issues in this era. A compelling tale rich in historical research and detail, this novel is a fascinating medical mystery tale. A starred Booklist review says, “Donati’s saga of a New York family in the 1880s, with its exquisitely realized characters, is apt to inspire repeated readings.” (Historical Fiction 2 — 2/19/2020)

WITHOUT HER by Rosalind Brackenbury (9781432876043) A lifelong, enigmatic friendship between two women is more deeply examined when one of them disappears mysteriously, leaving the other to wonder

if the disappearance is either selfish or involuntary. Publishers Weekly highly recommends this “standout novel, highlighted by fine prose and finely drawn characters” that will “reach into the heart of a long, complicated friendship, and the result is a skilled combination of a missing-person mystery and a sentimental reminiscence.” Without Her is sure to appeal to readers of Saints for All Occasions by J. Courtney Sullivan, All We Ever Wanted by Emily Griffin, and Lilac Girls by Martha Hall Kelly. (Women’s Fiction — 2/19/2020)

Soon, another victim is found though, and Eve thinks she may be dealing with a madman. “The gripping plot builds to

a dramatic finale. Robb shows no sign of losing steam,” according to a review in Publishers Weekly. (Wheeler Hardcover — 2/5/2020)

MERCY HOUSE by Alena Dillon (9781432878849) This powerful debut novel features Sister Evelyn and a group of nuns that operate a home for abused and abandoned women. Evelyn fiercely protects the women at Mercy House, but soon she must face an investigation by Bishop Hawkins and threats from a gang leader. The nuns of Mercy House sometimes use unorthodox methods not sanctioned by the Church, but they always put the safety and needs of the women at Mercy House first. Publishers Weekly notes, “Dillon balances her protagonist’s righteous anger with an earnest exploration of Evie’s faith and devotion to justice and community service. This uncompromising story will light up book clubs.” (Core 8 — 5/6/2020)

The newcomers arouse suspicion, but Sadie wants to get to the bottom of what happened although it may cost her dearly. This title has been optioned for a Netflix series. “The story unfolds in three deeply sad female voices that sweep readers up in the dramas and secrets, past and present, that seal the fate of each character,” says a Kirkus Review. AMERICAN DIRT by Jeanine Cummins (9781432872243) This title is our Spotlight pick for Feburary, see newsletter page 1 for details. (Core — 2/5/2020)

WEATHER by Jenny Offill (9781432877729) Lizzie Benson works as a librarian although she really spends much of her time trying to help her mother and brother fight their personal demons. Lizzie has a husband and child, but she doesn’t spend

enough time with either. Now an old friend wants her to work with her on her successful podcast, Hell and High Water. Lizzie takes this on as well and is leading a life that is too busy, which makes her a relatable protagonist for many women today. Much of the story is written in Lizzie’s internal monologue as she struggles to balance all the demands of her life. A starred Kirkus Review says, “The tension between mundane daily concerns and looming apocalypse, the “weather” of our days both real and metaphorical, is perfectly captured in Offill’s brief, elegant paragraphs, filled with insight and humor. Offill is good company for the end of the world.” (Basic 7 — 4/8/2020)

WHEN WE WERE VIKINGS by Andrew David MacDonald (9781432876340) This debut is a rare find that depicts the world through the eyes of Zelda, a 21-year-old woman with fetal alcohol

spectrum disorder. Zelda is also obsessed with Vikings. She lives with her brother, Gert, who works for a local gang. Zelda has rules to follow that make her feel secure, but she also loves her brother enough to bail him out when he gets in trouble. Zelda also has the same dreams as any other young woman, including her relationship with her boyfriend, Marxy, who also has a disability. Their relationship is portrayed with a refreshing realism. A Library Journal review notes, “MacDonald covers very difficult terrain: poverty, lack of health care, violence, child abuse, abandonment, and alcoholism. Yet Zelda prevails and becomes a hero in her own ‘legend,’” and, “In this well-written and compelling novel, MacDonald conveys Zelda’s particular challenges and succeeds in bringing her to life.” This novel was also a January 2020 LibraryReads pick. (Core 8 — 3/4/2020)

upon the antisocial dragon. Highfire detests human beings after they killed his whole family, but he ends up forming a friendship with the teen against his better judgment. This unusual tale is, “A fun, unusual contemporary fantasy that doesn’t skimp on violence,” according to a Kirkus Review. This title was also a LibraryReads selection for January 2020. (Core 8 — 4/8/2020)

THE RESISTERS by Gish Jen (9781432879969) Funny, charming yet desperately unsettling, this futuristic story features AutoAmerica, a place where half of the land is under water. Half of the Internet is being used for surveillance now. There are also two groups of people: the angel-fair ‘Netted’ live on the high ground while the ‘Surplus’ folks live in the swamps or on the water. A girl named Gwen is born in a ‘Surplus’ family that has an incredible talent for baseball. She is moved up to play in the Olympics with the “Netted’ class. This society is a cautionary tale that fits right in with contemporary politics, and book discussion groups would find this a compelling choice. A starred Kirkus Review states, “We recognize the world Jen creates because it is, finally, nearly identical to our own.” (Bill’s Bookshelf — 6/3/2020)

WHEN TIME STOPPED: A Memoir of My Father’s War and What Remains by Ariana Neumann (9781432880071) This compelling family memoir covers almost 90 years in the Neumann family history beginning with the first family member being taken into custody by Nazis for taking a bath in a river closed to Jews. He died 18 days later. Over 70 percent of the Neumann family members succumbed to the Nazis. Hans Neumann managed to escape, eventually traveling to Venezuela where he created an industrial empire. Hans never spoke of the atrocities he witnessed in Germany. Upon his death, he left family letters and diaries to his daughter, Ariana. These items detailed the lives of family members struggling to survive the Nazi regime. Publishers Weekly states, “Neumann’s eloquent, skillfully researched book will appeal to many, especially those interested in family histories and the lives of Holocaust survivors.” (Nonfiction — 6/17/2020)

Deciding to keep the baby, her daughter ignores her mother’s advice to consider adoption. Liv’s husband suggests they could adopt the baby, adding to the chaos as the due date gets closer. Booklist writes, “This heart-tugging journey is perfect for readers reexamining ways to prioritize their passions.” (Relationship Reads — 2/19/2020)

If your readers like Debbie Macomber:THE SUMMER RETREAT by Sheila Roberts (9781432873981) USA Today bestselling author, Sheila Roberts, delivers another fun and satisfying romance in the “Moonlight Harbor” series. Reeling from

a recent breakup with a boyfriend who cheated on her, Celeste Jones escapes to the beach at Moonlight Harbor, where her sister welcomes her at the Driftwood Inn. Needing a distraction, Celeste starts dating a local pastor but can’t stop thinking about the sarcastic and opinionated fiction writer, Henry Gilbert, who annoys her greatly. “Lighthearted and full of colorful, quirky characters and surf-side warmth, this latest foray into Roberts’s picturesque coastal world is sheer delight and will appeal to romance and women’s fiction fans alike,” describes Library Journal. CARNEGIE HILL by Jonathan Vatner (9781432872595) Penelope “Pepper” Bradford moves into a pricey co-op in New York with her fiance. In order to meet new people and to gain greater control over her life, Pepper joins

the co-op board which contains a whole cast of intriguing characters. Despite her parents’ concerns, Pepper marries her less-than-trustworthy fiancé and tries to find a good couple she can use as an example to save her young marriage. What she finds, are a variety of marriages in crisis. Inspiration for a healthy relationship may come in a form that Pepper least expects. A starred Booklist review writes, “[A] charming, comically observant debut . . . it’s [Vatner’s] consistently wry wit and obvious affection for his deluded, struggling characters that are this novel’s propelling forces, and which will win readers over with delight.” (Basic 8 — 2/5/2020)

If your readers like Ruth Ware and Cornelia Read:THE MISSING ONES by Edwin Hill (9781432875206) Recovering from the aftermath of Little Comfort, which includes taking care of a four-year-old, Hester Thursby must untangle a mystery involving missing children and a community on an island off the coast of Maine. At the center

of this community is a dilapidated victorian house and murder that will challenge Hester’s sense of right and wrong. A starred Library Journal review notes, “This second book in the ‘Hester Thursby’ series can be read and enjoyed on its own, but that would mean missing out on time with Hester. Addressing the impact of illegal drug dealing and use, this whodunit has broken family dynamics and a wonderfully complex and intricate mystery, plenty to engage readers looking for a new amateur detective to follow.” (Mystery 4 — 2/5/2020)
