Dear Padre February 10, 2019
What is transubstantiation?
At the beginning of the Christian community, preachers and poets created magnificent descriptions of the Eucharist using images from the Jewish Scriptures as well as from the surrounding folklores. As Christianity spread throughout the centuries, especially in the developing European monasteries and universities, theologians became more concerned both with defining the Eucharist more precisely and describ-ing more exactly the changes that occur when the words of the priest are spoken over the bread and wine. In the mid-sixteenth century, the Council of Trent, under the pressure of various misunderstandings and disagreements, articulated the doctrine we now know as transubstantiation. This doctrine, founded in the philosophy of Aristotle and clarified by St. Thomas Aquinas, seeks to explain without ambiguity that the Eucharist is a substantial change of bread and wine. The very substance— the “breadness” and the “wineness” of the gifts—is transformed. Even though it looks and tastes like bread and wine, it no longer is; only the physical attributes remain. Bread and wine are now something new: the living Body and Blood of Christ. The explanation offered by the doctrine of transubstantiation is still helpful. The next challenge lies in how to take this truth about the Real Presence of Christ and make it come alive in the hearts and lives of Christians through vibrant descriptions in creative preaching and catechesis. Our Mission as Christians… The knowledge and realization of how deeply we are loved by God elicits a response of love that simultaneously draws us closer to God and at the same time, impels us to share his love with others. Embracing a relationship with God means following in His footsteps, wherever He may call. Just as Jesus invited St. Peter and St. Andrew to become his disciples, he invites us to do the same: “Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.” Being a disciple of Jesus naturally includes sharing the Gospel with others and inviting them into a deeper relationship with God. As Christians, our identity and our mission are two sides of the same coin; like the apostles, we are called to be missionary disciples.
Please pray for those who protect us. Lord, hold our troops in your loving hands. Protect them as they protect us. Bless them and their families for the selfless acts they perform for us in our time of need. Amen.
Mardi Gras Silent Auction News
We need donations for the silent auction. Please bring your new or home-made
items to the parish office. We also need someone to take over
organizing the silent auction. JoAnn has done it for several years and is willing to help someone new learn how to organize
the project. The best idea would be to have two people work together with the auction so it is an easier task to manage.
Call the office to volunteer. Find a friend and volunteer together!
I asked you and you would not listen; so I asked my God and He did listen. ~St. Scholastica

There is a story about a sophomore who worked in the library at Princeton, New Jersey to earn money to help with his education. One night about closing time, he was walking around the empty halls of the library when he noticed in the very back corner amid an old stack of books, an old man reading and taking notes furiously. The old man was very intent. The librarian became a little curious, so he went back to the old man and said, "My, what are you studying so intently?" The old man looked up long enough to say, "Well, I'm a student of physics." The young librarian said, "Well, last year I took a course in physics and I think I have all I need for an understanding of physics." He then turned and walked back to his desk. You can imagine his chagrin a few minutes later when the old man checked out some books, and on his library-card was the name Albert Einstein. God's call is a calling to a process, not to a single task. Today’s Scripture readings about the calls of Isaiah, Peter and Paul remind us that our calling is to a lifelong process of obedience, service and surrender to God in which we grow daily more like Jesus. There is nothing in the world more joyful than that. There is nothing in the world more challenging. Peace,
May the Angels lead her into Paradise!
