First Group have invested heavily to solve the long
standing trackside-to-train communications for a
connected customer experience from station-to-
station
This is not just about calls but a creating a home or
work like experience, where even on the busiest
trains customers can enjoy being fully connected.

Mobile versus Ultrafast
2G
3G (500kbps)
4G (12Mbps)On-train throughput: <2Mbps
3
4G/LTE-A (~50Mbps)
5G (~200Mbps)
Ultrafast/5G’esque
On-train throughput >1Gbps
We need ~150Mbps as
FOC for customer Wi-Fi
and train data. So, could
have >>500Mbps available
for top-up, NR, etc!

‘Overage’
‘Overage’ presents an opportunity to not only delight customers but engage a wider
market to making a step change in rail travel:
7
▪ The TOC will require bandwidth for its customer
obligation to offer 50Mb/customer per day FOC
▪ Customer are highly likely to top-up. This may be
direct at cost or via their MNO, Sky or other
package, if they have secured that bandwidth to
offer it FOC to their customers. Or, other services
have bought the capacity to server the captured
audience
▪ There are many potential customer groups, e.g.
BTP/CCTV, NR, Mobile Operators, etc.

DALI Programme
The Dali Programme was born out of years of mmWave development to trial it in trackside-to-
train backhaul delivery with the aim of deliver an exceptional Customer Experience (CX) through
Ultrafast Wi-Fi.
This has so far proven, at Network Rail’s test track, that mmWave can successfully deliver
Ultrafast Wi-Fi. However, Dali is about the total solution at is at a TRL Level 7/8 now, and will be
at 8/9 by the time we deliver SWR.
