Anthony James is an Early Literacy Program candidate as part of the

innovative Changing the Face of Teaching initiative. Anthony works

as a first-grade teaching assistant at Memminger Elementary in North

Charleston, S.C., during the week, and travels home to spend time

with his wife and son on weekends. Despite the travel and time away

from family, Anthony says it’s worth it for his students and the impact

he has on their lives.

Anthony says, “Most of my students don’t have a male role model – I

am their role model. And I show them every day, if I can do it, they can

do it too.”

Halley Black’s curiosity about how a product comes to market led her to

choose a concentration in global logistics, in which she hopes to become

a “travel agent for cargo.” Halley is a member of the Schottland Scholars

program in the School of Business which takes 10 or so of the most

talented and enthusiastic students and provides a customized experience

their senior year in a variety of business industries and environments.

On a recent Schottland Scholars trip to Rochester, N.Y., Halley says the

highlight was getting the insider’s tour of the distribution center of one of

the most successful supermarket chains in the Northeast by CEO Danny

Wegman. “The Schottland Scholars program,” says Halley, “has given me

the opportunity of a lifetime.”

Although no one in her family attended college, Ashley Haupt says she was

destined to be a nurse. From a young age, Ashley was fascinated by the

human body and wanted to contribute to the well-being of others. When

she shared her aspirations with health and human performance professor

Deborah Miller, Miller challenged her to prove herself and their relationship

grew. Ashley says professors like Miller have been inspiring mentors.

The physical education major chose a less traditional path to nursing, but

Ashley knows it will make her a more compassionate nurse - and Duke

University agrees. After graduation in December, Ashley heads to Durham,

N.C., to attend Duke’s top-rated accelerated nursing program. “Sometimes

I can’t believe I did it, but I did. I am proof that students can come to the

College and go anywhere,” says Ashley.
