Éxito Rotundo delMayakoba Golf Classic 2009

Con un lleno total, se llevó a cabo este primero de Marzo la ronda finaldel tercer año consecutivo del Mayakoba Golf Classic, único evento delPGA TOUR en México, donde 132 jugadores profesionales compitieronpor una bolsa de 3.6 millones de dólares.

En una reñida competencia, Mark Wilson de 34 años originario deWisconsin logró su segundo título en el PGA TOUR, convirtiéndoseen el flamante campeón del Mayakoba Golf Classic 2009 con unapuntuación final de menos 13. Wilson definió su liderazgo con cua-tro espectaculares rondas de 66, 64, 69 y 68 golpes, dando un totalde 267 que lo colocaron en primer lugar y lo llevaron a obtener$648,000 dólares.

Este evento es sin duda el torneo de golf internacional más importan-te en todo Latinoamérica, por lo que es un orgullo para México y elCaribe Mexicano que cada año resulte ser un rotundo éxito y se per-feccione en cada edición.

Este año ha tenido la mayor cantidad de jugadores rankeados a nivelmundial. Con un clima extraordinario, visitantes de todo el mundo ygente local provenientes de todo el Caribe Mexicano se deleitaronobservando a los profesionales realizar tiros extraordinarios en uncampo en perfectas condiciones.

Este torneo se ha hecho famoso por su dificultad y belleza, los hoyosde la costa ofrecen una vista al mar azul turquesa, algo único en elTour, pero también presentan fuertes vientos. Los jugadores saben queesto implica un reto a su más fina destreza, ya que sólo aquellos quesaben atacar bien al viento en sus tiros de salida mantienen su scoredurante el torneo atravesando estos hermosos y traicioneros hoyos.

Los Palcos VIP y el Palco del Club de Fundadores ofrecieron excelenteservicio, buen vino y finos platillos; además, para los más fanáticos quecaminaron siguiendo a sus jugadores favoritos en el campo les brindótodas las comodidades. Felicidades a todos los organizadores, volunta-rios y a todo los que visitaron e hicieron de este gran evento todo unéxito, nos vemos en el próximo Mayakoba Golf Classic 2010.

For the third year in a row, on March 1st, the only PGA Tour event inMexico took place with a great audience. There were 132 professio-nal players competing for 3.6 million dollars in prize money.

This year there were more world ranked players than ever and theweather was marvellous. Visitors from all over the world, in addi-tion to people from the Mexican Caribbean delighted themselvesobserving the professionals golfers make extraordinary shots underideal conditions.

This tournament has become famous for its difficulty and also its beau-ty. The holes along the coast offer a view of the turquoise Caribbeanseas, something unique on the tour, but this holes present strongwinds, which will challenge the player’s skills since only those whoknow how to properly attack a hole in the wind will be able to main-tain their score throughout the tournament while taking on thesebeautiful and treacherous holes.

The VIP and Founder’s Club hospitality offered excellent service, goodwines and fine foods. The State Governor, Felix Gonzalez Canto, the president of OHL Group,Juan Miguel Villar Mir and Golf legend, Greg Norman, along with theSecretary of Tourism, Sara Latife Ruiz Chavez and the Director ofEconomic Development of Solidaridad, Lenin Amaro, who assisted onbehalf of the Municipal President, Roman Quian Alcocer; on SundayMarch 1st hold a press conference for international and national mediaduring the closing ceremony of the third year of this magnificentannual event in which 132 of the best professional players of the PGATOUR participated.

During the conference, Felix Gonzalez highlighted that this tournamentof international recognition is the first held outside the US and Canada,and that every year it keeps growing in terms of number and quality ofits players.

That is why he predicted that soon this event will be among themost prestigious in the world and with greater demand for interna-tional golfers.

Greg Norman, owner of a premier golf courses design firm that hasdesigned over 70 golf courses around the world and 53 additional pro-jects in different developmental stages; created “El Camaleon”, golfcourse host of this tournament.

Juan Miguel Villar is a renowned businessman in the tourist and realestate area. His corporation has invested in Quintana Roo over onethousand million dollars developing tourist and golf resorts.

The contribution of Greg Norman and Juan Miguel Villas is strategi-cally important for Quintana Roo to promote high purchasing powertourism through golf and the world class hotel infrastructure, saidthe Governor.

He emphasized that after just a few years since its inauguration, theMayakoba complex has become one of the most exclusive and impor-tant hotel and residential developments in Mexico and the world, re-presenting the first phase of growth that the OHL Group has projectedfor this area.

This reassures the trust of investors in Quintana Roo which is nee-ded now. Problems elsewhere in the world have not been an obsta-cle for the growth of the industry as shown by the data of the touristindicators, that last December showed a growth of tourism of 11%which was sustained through January of this year, emphasizedGonzalez Canto.

He reasserted that despite problems around the world, the MexicanCaribbean continues to show a strong increase of tourists with highpurchasing power thanks to this kind of event.

El Gobernador del Estado, Félix González Canto, el Presidente delGrupo OHL, Juan Miguel Villar Mir, y la leyenda del Golf, Greg Norman,acompañados de la Secretaria de Turismo, Sara Latife Ruiz Chávez, asícomo del Director de Desarrollo Económico de Solidaridad, LeninAmaro, quien asistió en representación del Presidente MunicipalRomán Quian Alcocer, ofrecieron el domingo primero de Marzo unaconferencia de prensa conjunta a los medios nacionales e internaciona-les en el marco de la clausura de la tercera edición de este gran torneo,en el que participaron 132 de los mejores jugadores profesionales delPGA TOUR.

Durante la conferencia, Félix González resaltó que este torneo de golfde talla internacional es el primero en su tipo que se organiza fuera deEstados Unidos y Canadá, mismo que cada año va en crecimiento encuanto a número y calidad de competidores.

Por ello, auguró que muy pronto el evento estará ubicado entre los más pres-tigiosos del mundo, con la mayor demanda de golfistas internacionales.

Greg Norman, leyenda del golf y propietario de la reconocida firma dediseño de campos de golf premier que cuenta en su haber con más de70 campos diseñados alrededor del mundo y 53 proyectos adicionalesen diferentes etapas de desarrollo, es artífice del club “El Camaleón”sede de este importante campeonato.

Juan Miguel Villar, es un reconocido empresario del ramo turístico einmobiliario, cuya corporación ha invertido en Quintana Roo, más demil millones de dólares en el desarrollo de complejos turísticos y cam-pos de golf.

El aporte de Greg Norman y Juan Miguel Villar es de importancia estra-tégica para Quintana Roo, al impulsar un turismo de alto poder adqui-sitivo a través del golf y de instalaciones hoteleras de clase mundial,manifestó el Gobernador.

Destacó que a pocos años de haberse inaugurado el complejoMayakoba, se ha convertido en uno de los fraccionamientos hotelerosy residenciales más exclusivos e importantes de México y del mundo, loque representa una primera etapa del crecimiento que tiene proyecta-do el Grupo OHL en la entidad.

Ello refrenda la confianza de los inversionistas en Quintana Roo, hoy másque nunca necesario en medio de la crisis que circunda al mundo, peroque no ha sido impedimento para el avance de la industria como lodemuestran los datos del barómetro turístico en diciembre pasado, mis-mos que arrojan un crecimiento del 11 por ciento en la afluencia de visi-tantes, el cual, se sostuvo en enero de este año, subrayó González Canto.

Reafirmó que en el Caribe Mexicano, a pesar de los difíciles momentosque se viven a nivel mundial, el turismo de alto poder adquisitivo con-tinúa con un fuerte aumento, gracias en parte, a este tipo de eventos.

nother premier golf event is fast approachingfor the Mexican Caribbean. The 2009 IberostarRiviera Maya Open will be contested May 11-

17, 2009 at the Iberostar Playa Paraiso Golf Clubpart of the all inclusive luxury Iberostar resort loca-ted in the Riviera Maya. Professional golfers fromaround the world will be on hand to compete for the$125,000.00 USD purse.

Last year’s event ended in dramatic fashion as rookieDaniel Im edged former PGA Tour regular BrentSchwarzrock and Mexican star Oscar Serna for theone shot victory. Im won again a few weeks laterproving he’s a true champion. The inaugural event(2007) saw Spencer Levin, now on the PGA TOUR,defeat veteran Derek Gillespie. Despite consecutivebirdies on the final 3 holes Gillespie couldn’t hold offthe charging Levin. The win was the first on theCanadian Tour for Levin who turned pro in 2005.The former number 2 ranked amateur in the worldin 2004 went on to capture the Times Colonist Openthe following week in Victoria, British Columbia andfinished 2nd on the 2007 Canadian Tour money list.

The week will be filled with events starting with theexciting Monday Qualifier, an opportunity for localprofessionals and amateurs with a handicap of 6 orless to compete for the final 3 spots into the tourna-ment. Tuesday will be the kid’s clinic where local chil-dren will have the chance to pick up a few tips fromthe Pros and watch the practice round. The ExoticTravel Club Pro-Am which will be conducted onWednesday May 13th will be one of the highlightsof the week long activities. Amateurs will have theopportunity to play with one of the Tour’s topProfessionals and compete for huge prizes.

The 72 tournament will begin on Thursday and fi-nish Sunday May 17th. Tickets can be purchased atthe gate for $350 pesos and includes all food andbeverages. Iberostar guests will have free access tothe tournament. So come on out and see one of thefinest professional golf events of the year.

La semana estará llena de eventos empezando con la emocionante califi-cación el lunes, una oportunidad para profesionales y amateurs locales conhandicap de seis o menos de competir por los últimos tres lugares en eltorneo. El martes tendrá lugar la clínica para niños donde niños locales ten-drán la oportunidad de recibir consejos de los profesionales y observar laronda de práctica. El Exotic Travel Club Pro-Am que tendrá lugar el miér-coles 13 de mayo será una de las mayores atracciones de la semana.Amateurs tendrán la oportunidad de jugar con uno de los profesionales deltour y competir por grandes premios.

THE IDEAL TEMPERATURE TO SERVE WINE

ne of the most important factors inenjoying wine to the maximum is toserve it at the proper temperature. The

temperature at which the wine is served affectsboth aroma and taste.

The influence of temperature in the serving of wineis such that it can even change its characteristics.

In general, it is recommended that white winesbe served at lower temperatures than redwines, as well as lower temperatures for youngwines as opposed to mature ones.

Serving wine at room temperature alwaysapplies as long as it does not exceed 22degrees. In summertime, room temperature istoo high for all wines since the heat cancels allthe aromas and volatilizes the alcohol. Withwarm temperatures, wines should be cooled orrefreshed in an ice bucket. This goes for bothred and white wines, thereby giving us a betterappreciation of the wines’ qualities while beingable to enjoy it with more pleasure.

WHEN TO DECANT A WINE?

It is important to decant mature wines, reservesand great reserves as well as wines that havenot been filtered in their fermenting processand might have sediment it addition to smalldeposits of tannin, the wine’s natural colorantthat will affect its presentation.

The main purpose of decanting a wine is thatthe sediment remains in the bottom of the bot-

With wines that do notrequire decantation, werecommend the bottle beuncorked initially. Do thishalf hour before servingwhich will allow the wineto breathe and additionallysoften its flavour.

¿CUANDO DECANTAR UN VINO?

Es importante decantar los vinos tintos maduros, reservas y grandes reser-vas, así como los vinos que no han sido filtrados en su proceso de elaboración y quepueden contener sedimentos, pequeños depósitos que son un tipo de tanino colo-rante natural del vino y que afean su presentación al momento de servirlo.

El propósito de la decantación es que estos sedimentos se queden en el fondo de labotella, para servir el vino directamente del decantador, limpio y libre de depósitos.

Además de apartar el sedimento, al decantar logramos laaireación que permite al vino entrar en contacto conel aire, libere sus aromas y desarrolle bouquet,haciéndolo más suave al paladar.

Para decantar correctamente se debemantener la botella de pie, de maneraque los sedimentos queden deposi-tados en el fondo de la misma; des-corchar cuidadosamente sin agi-tar la botella y enseguida verterel vino lateralmente en eldecantador cuidando que lossedimentos queden dentro dela botella.

En el caso del resto de los vinoscuya decantación no es necesa-ria, se recomienda descorchar-los al menos media hora antesde servir, para permitirles “res-pirar” y suavizar su sabor.

de boda era una de las más simbólicas de su cultura en el aspectoespiritual y religioso. En este místico ritual, dos individuos se consa-graban para formar una pareja, pasando por un estado de liminidado de transición necesario para su inmersión en la sociedad.

Para los mayas, el matrimonio era un ritual crucial en el transcursodel ciclo de su vida que representaba beneficios económicos, políti-cos o de alianza para las familias de los novios. Los padres del noviose encargaban de buscar a la esposa ideal para su hijo, la cual, seescogía entre muchachas de la misma clase social. Para formalizar lapareja, se hacía uso de un casamentero, quien se encargaba denegociar la unión; una vez acordados los términos se preparaba todopara la celebración.

La ceremonia nupcial era ofrecida por un sacerdote quien gozaba delreconocimiento entre los habitantes de la comunidad por su expe-riencia y conocimiento. El área ceremonial era purificada con humosagrado de copal y armonizada con música emitida por instrumen-tos prehispánicos como el caracol, mientras la pareja recitaba unasecuencia de oraciones (Payal chi’) frente al altar, en el cual habíaofrendas tradicionales a los dioses como maíz, representando laprosperidad y fertilidad; el cacao, simbolizando la unión; y el balché,licor ceremonial. El sacerdote pedía permiso entregando las ofrendasa los dioses de los 4 puntos cardinales, los cuales eran representadoscon flores de colores rojo, purpura, amarillo y blanco, el oriente sig-nifica el nacimiento del sol; el poniente, significa la muerte del sol;el sur, significa el nacimiento del hombre; y al norte, significa lamuerte del ser humano. En el centro, se levantaba una cruz demadera que simboliza la cruz cósmica basada en la conexión de losmayas con el universo y sus dioses. Esta cruz unía a la pareja con lamadre tierra, símbolo de la feminidad, representada por la DiosaIxchel; y con la energía cósmica masculina, atribuida al Dios Itzamná;El sacerdote concluía con la aceptación de las fuerzas supremas y labendición de sus dioses para llevar a cabo la unión.

of the most symbolic in their culture in the spiritual and religiousaspect. In this mythical ritual, two individuals sanctified themselvesto form a couple, passing through a state of transition necessary forthem to integrate themselves in society.

For the Mayans, matrimony was a crucial ritual in the course of theirlife cycle that represented benefits economically, politically and as analliance between the couple’s families. The parents of the groomwere in charge of looking for the ideal wife for their son. A wife waschosen from among many girls of the same social class. To forma-lize the relationship, they used a matchmaker, who was in charge ofnegotiating the union, and once the terms were settled, then every-thing was prepared for the celebration.

The nuptial ceremony was performed by a priest who had the recog-nition among the inhabitants of the community for his experienceand knowledge. The ceremonial area was purified with sacred copalsmoke while the couple recited a sequence of prayers (Payal chi’) infront of the altar. Here they gave traditional offerings to the gods likecorn, representing prosperity and fertility, cacao symbolizing theunion and the balche ceremonial liquor. The priest asked permission,giving the offerings to the gods of the four cardinal points whichwere represented with flowers in red, purple, yellow and whitecolours. The east means the birth of the sun; west means the deathof the sun, south means the birth of men and north means thedeath of the human being. In the middle, a wooden cross was raisedsymbolizing the cosmic cross based on the connection of the Mayanwith the Universe and their gods. This cross united the couple withMother Earth, symbol of the femininity represented by the GoddessIxchel and with the masculine cosmic energy attributed to the GodItzamna. The priest ended with the acceptance of the supremestrength and the blessing of their gods for this union to occur.

This magical ceremony is filledwith symbolism and mysticalspirituality and is still being per-formed with the same intent,although the ritual evolvedthrough time. Nowadays, the“Mayan Weddings” remainsimilar in form to the traditio-nal one, although Hispanic ele-ments have been added butthey preserve the true meaningof marriage, symbolizing aspiritual union of two inde-pendent beings that completethemselves to form a couple inbalance and harmony withthe Universe.
