US Fulbright Scholars to Italy – Academic Year 2016 - 2017 2

The U.S. – Italy Fulbright Commission

Fulbright Scholars in Italy can be invited to lecture at other Italian or European universities under the auspices of the Fulbright Inter-Country Program.

Fulbright Inter-Country Program

The Fulbright Inter-Country grant program offers the possibility to invite Fulbright lecturers and researchers in Italy or in Europe (http://www.cies.org/us_scholars/us_dir.htm) to take part in academic meetings, conferences, seminars and other program-related activities organized by Italian or European universities.

The Inter-Country program, carried out in collaboration with Fulbright Commissions in Europe, finances travel expenses of Fulbright researchers or lecturers from the city in Italy or in Europe where he/she is carrying on his/her Fulbright project to the site of the hosting institution.

Italian universities interested in inviting Fulbright scholars temporarily residing in Italy or Europe should contact in advance the Fulbright scholar to discuss the proposed program and to verify his/her availability.

The universities then should send their request to the US- Italy Fulbright Commission to the attention of Executive Director Paola Sartorio (Email: [email protected]). The request should be accompanied by the

event program.

Project

The History of Malaria and its Eradication in Sardinia, Italy: Implications for Global Health Policy and Understanding the Incidence of Type-1 Diabetes. Throughout history, Sardinia was infamous for unhealthiness and malaria. In 1947, the island was the site of a pioneering anti-malaria project funded by the United States and which used extraordinary amounts of the insecticide DDT. The proposed research has two related components: (1) Completion of a study about epidemiologic, genetic, demographic, and socioeconomic effects of malaria and its elimination on the Sardinian people; and (2) Initiation of a collaborative study on the historical distribution of malaria and DDT in order to test Epigenetic hypotheses about the sharply increased rates of Type-1 Diabetes on the island. Findings will have important implications for Global Health

Gender and Migration in Italian and Italian American Studies – Cinematic and Literary Representations. The project(s) I propose for the University of Calabria all reflect my research interests in gender and migration in Italian and Italian American culture, complex issues as seen through literature, film and media, attempting to portray the struggle to comprehend and overcome gender barriers. In addition to my teaching, I plan to continue my scholarly research in both fields, migration and gender, and aim to finish my second manuscript entitled Dandyism in the Socio-Economic Context of Italian Americana: Robert Ferro. Lastly, I hope to organize a two day conference on Italian Immigration and Emigration which will culminate in the publication of a edited volume in both English and Italian.

I am a 17-year tenured business law professor at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo (“Cal Poly”). Cal Poly is an outstanding public university that values good teaching and research. From 2004-09 I also served as Associate Dean for my College of Business. I have extensively published in refereed law and business academic journals and won major teaching awards. Previously I also served as a Fulbright Specialist in Pakistan and Tunisia. Project

Explosive Volcanic Eruptions: Etna, Stromboli, Sunset Crater and Mars. The project focuses on basalt eruptions because they dominate volcanism on Earth and Mars, they erupt in a variety of unpredictable ways, and the causes of the most violent eruptions are poorly understood and hotly debated. Observations of past and ongoing activity at Stromboli and Mt. Etna (Italy), two of the most active basalt volcanoes on Earth, and the violent pre-historic eruption of Sunset Crater (AZ) will be used to understand what controls the violence of basalt eruptions and to develop models for use in forecasting and in studies of Mars volcanism. Hazards assessment is a key activity at the Italian host institution and Mars science is a long-standing strength at Arizona State.

Studying American Culture Through Mark Twain and the Popular Arts. I will develop and teach two graduate classes. The first will focus on the writing of and scholarly response to Mark Twain. The course will explore Mark Twain's America and Twain's experiences as a foreign tourist. It will use Twain and his work as a frame of reference for better understanding American literature and culture between 1865 and 1910. The second course, Topics in American Cultural History, 1840-1960, will feature primary and secondary source readings on various forms of American popular art -- theatrical performances, movies, pulp novels, radio programs, music, and television programs. Students will complete short reaction papers, a thematic essay, and a longer research project.

An Investigation of Supply Chain Sourcing Contracts in Italian Manufacturing. At the University of Bologna I plan to study how the nature of business-to-business relationships in Italy, Italian labor law, and EU membership affect contracting and sourcing strategies, and how they differ from those in the US. Is supply-chain disruption a problem, and how is it dealt with? Is quality assurance a significant issue? Is recall risk high, and is Italian law helpful in mitigating that risk? Does comity among EU member nations afford additional flexibility to the sourcing companies? All of these questions might be answered with natural extensions of research I’ve done, and with the expertise and company access afforded by the faculty and resources at the University of Bologna.

Bridging Communities Through Literature: Lived Experience, Pedagogical Practice, and Cultural Exchange. I propose teaching a broadly conceived Master’s level course in American literature bringing together the multiple perspectives of the environmental humanities, including ecocriticism and gender studies, as well as literature and science studies. In consultation with the department, I could offer courses on 18th- and 19th-century U.S. literature, U.S. environmental literature, or literature by American women writers. I would seek involvement in the life of the department, including mentoring graduate students and early career faculty and look for long term collaboration. I would also like to share my work in American literary studies with the local community through public lectures

Global Insights into Sustainable Energy Engineering; Sustainable Solutions for Municipal Solid Waste Management. For this Teaching/Research Fulbright, I will develop a Sustainable Energy Engineering course for the Energy Engineering Graduate Program at University of Trento. The course will train students to combine fundamental engineering skills with life cycle and policy analyses to evaluate the sustainability of renewable energy systems. For my research, I will work with Dr. Luca Fiori to address municipal solid waste (MSW) management, an issue plaguing both countries. The Impact of Macroscopic Quantum Effects in Biology on Chronic and Degenerative Illness. I will partner with C. Verzegnassi (University of Udine) and F. Burigana (Association for Medicine and Complexity) in Trieste, Italy, to translate studies of the quantum properties of matter into new electromagnetic therapies. Guided by the understanding that a fractal-like hierarchy exists between micro-scale quantum dynamics and the physiology of complex living organisms, I will model fundamental properties (e.g., electron spin) to provide insights into the etiological impact of macroscopic quantum effects on chronic and degenerative illnesses like cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, and HIV. Modeling will allow testing of novel clinical interventions for diverse populations in Italy and the US.

History Memory and Justice: Italy and Beyond. I previously published a book on the Italian Racial (antisemitic) laws and the Holocaust in Italy. This project considers the memory of the Holocaust in contemporary Italy, including reparation efforts, museums and other commemorations, and portrayals in films, literature, and so forth. It is part of a broader project that considers the use of restorative justice, including apology, truth commissions, and other forms of nonmonetary compensation for human rights abuses in the United States, Russia, and various Western European countries. I will also be working on a second book involving tax and culture, with many of my most significant examples taken from Italy and neighboring countries.

Durable Cathodes for High Temperature Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells (PEMFC) and Hydrogen Separation. High temperature membranes such as polybenzimidazole (PBI) have enabled the development of new high temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cell PEMFCs that have improved impurity tolerance and enhanced ORR kinetics. However, PEMFC catalyst costs are still very high and present a substantial opportunity for transformative research. In this proposal with Politechnico of Milan, our team will:1) Investigate the influence of structural outputs to enhance reactant mass transport; 2) Elucidate the role of the catalyst hierarchical nano/micro structure on the Pt activity and stability;3) Study the influence of particle size and loading on the hydrogen separation.

Between Reform and Risorgimento: Science, Improvement, and Politics in the Kingdom of Naples, ca. 1734-1861. This study examines the relation between science and politics in the kingdoms of Naples and Sicily. The analysis covers the decisive intellectual, political, and social factors that influenced scientific thought and practice in Naples during the Enlightenment, the Napoleonic Wars, and Italian unification. I focus upon how scientists and policy-makers sought to cultivate the sciences for socioeconomic development and improvement, and how this knowledge intersected with projects for social reform, political radicalism, and ultimately nationalist aspirations. Consequently, the study emphasizes the dynamic of science in a developing or “modernizing” state, and the sociocultural context that framed its articulation and implementation.

Improving Pedestrian and Bicycle Road Safety: Crash Prediction Models and Guidelines for Community Needs-Based Contextual Designs. The proposed project will develop safety prediction models based on micro-simulated traffic conflicts for pedestrians and bicyclists at intersections and other critical locations, such as mid-block crossings or bus stops. Historical crash data and actual, observed traffic conflicts will be employed to validate the safety prediction models based on the simulated conflicts. The models will be used to develop guidelines for local agencies to evaluate alternative design for appropriately contextual solutions to improve the safety of these users balancing all stakeholder needs. A series of lectures and seminars will be presented targeting both the academic and professional community in Sicily.

Reconstructing Connections at the Port Town of Late Antique Salapia (Apulia) I propose to produce a comprehensive account of connectivity for the Late Antique occupation of the Roman port town of Salapia, located along the Adriatic coast of Puglia in southern Italy. I do this by looking at three aspects of connection: a study of road infrastructure in the area, the role of salt production in making local and regional links, and the study of ceramic data for evidence of short and long-distance trade. Each provides a different view of connection in the city, and it is the ways these overlap and interact that can provide a multifaceted picture of how this port, at the boundary between seaborne and inland connection, developed and fashioned its urban identity

RFID-enabled changes and standardization in the retail sector. Item-level RFID has been implemented in pilot sites in the last few years and retailers are starting to expand their use of this technology.Retailers realizing the benefits of this technology are confronted with a variety of issues such as privacy, the cost, and retail process adaptation to new capabilities. Privacy issues is being studied broadly and the cost of the technology has gone down significantly over the past years and can be justified with the benefits of employing the technology. This study proposes to study RFID adoption patterns in the US and Germany to further investigate retail processes adaptation to the capabilities of this new technology in order to standardize processes.

Project

The Rippling Pond: The Impact of EU-China Economic Ties on EU Foreign Policy. EU-China economic interactions have grown recently, to the point where China is the EU’s second leading trade partner and first source for imports. The top five destinations for Chinese FDI are all EU countries and the EU and China share a “Strategic Partnership.” But as global actors, they remain fundamentally different in terms of governing structure, principles of state-society interaction and pattern of alliances and commitments. This project will explore whether growing economic ties with China have changed the EU’s global role, including: the EU’s soft power, its strategic orientation toward Asia, its ties with the United States and its foreign policy organization and orientation.

Project

Toward Improved US – EU Collaboration in Post-Conflict Constitutional Processes. During post-conflict constitutional processes, advisers from common law and civil code systems often find themselves disagreeing over the advantages of one legal system over the other. As a constitutional advisor, I propose to engage with European academics and advisors who have an interest in post-conflict constitutional processes with the goal of advancing the use of problem-solving comparative approaches. My ultimate goal is to produce an article and comparative materials that would be useful during post-conflict constitutional processes. I also propose to teach one of the five core international and comparative law courses I teach at William and Mary Law School.
